Cheers Baz, couldn't get it to work but then realised there' an 'a' missing.
They are also a good price, may give them a try as no one seems to have used economycarrentals.
We're staying in Albufeira again for 16 days from June 18th but will be spending 2 nights somewhere else in between?
Hopefully Lagos but no hotels coming up cheap except for one in Praia Rocha but will definately have a night in Lagos to see what its like then maybe stay there next holiday. Spent half a day there last year, walked round the marina then onto the beach (across a railway line somewhere). Beach was superb, hardly anybody there and this was the end of July.

I've sent you a p.m. re:a Lagos hotel that may suit you.

Thanks again for the info Sagres, will keep searching.

I guess no one has used economycarrentals then!

I've never used them. We always use economy car hire. Just got back from the Alagrve on a golfing break. We hired 2 cars for a week, both nearly new Punto's. Total cost was £132 pounds. Not bad when you think transfers to and from airport would have been around 35 euros each way, and we would have needed at least 2 taxis. It meant we virtually got the cars for peanuts. :)

As Mick sez economycarhire are excellent & well recommended, give them a try next time daz. Cheers Jayjan

Thanks for the info, would use economycarhire but as we are staying for 16 days we only want a car for about a week so need it delivering to the hotel and economycarhire charge 20 euros each way for delivery.

Apologies as I know this has been asked a few times before, but who are the best people to hire a car with? We are looking to pick the car up at Faro and drive to Lagos and be keeping the car for two weeks, returning it to Faro on our last day.

We don't want any nasty suprises when we hand it back i.e being charged for 'damage' that may have been in existence before we hired. Just a tried and trusted, reputable company.

Thanks, Doe :D

Hi Doe,

The one a lot of us recommend is Economy Car Hire. Good cars, reasonable prices, absolutely no excess to pay in the event of accident or theft, second driver free, entry into Spain included (although I'm not sure if you're fully insured in Spain - anyone else know?). Easy to deal with - you can get a quote and book online, but they're easy to contact on the phone too and you'll still get the internet price if you give the quote number. But, as with all hire cars, it's always best to have a good look round the car before you get in and point out anything you don't want to get the blame for at the end of the hire period, although the firm they mainly use, Travel Rent, only ever seem to check the fuel level when you return the car, as they know any damage is down to them to repair.

economycarrentals.com are also well priced and this includes free driver, full insurance (no excess) etc

We do as you are doing doe ie drive from Faro to Lagos and keep the car for 2 weeks. The first time was with ecomony and the 2nd with another company. We are going again in June and have booked once again with economy.

We left €50 deposit instead of CC details and on return they checked the fuel gauge and gave us back the €50 cash without any problems.

You give your details to the rep as you come out of arrivals lounge then head for the car park where there is another rep waiting for you near to your car. They show you the car and give you details etc and you're off. Same on return - rep is waiting for you in the same spot.

The other car hire firm we used had an office on site. Hubbie was in there for ages filling in forms and having to leave CC details. No-one showed us where the car was, just a number of the car parking spot (no car there he had to go back to office) still no-one came out to assist and we had a bit of trouble finding our way out of their inclosed car park.

Hence back to economy this year.

:thanks all. I got myself an one line quote from Economy Car Hire yesterday which was just over 200 pounds for the 2 weeks, of course this was for the most basic car but seemed very reasonable. Particularly as they seem to come so recommended. I couldn't work out if that was for a car with aircon though, which I feel we need as we will be there the last two weeks in July.

We only need one driver as I don't like to drive abroad and am only licenced for automatics which puts the price up.

Glynis did you print yourself out a route map from anywhere or did you just hope for the best?

Doe,
Have a look at :http://www.simplylagos.com/navigating.htm#faro. This gives precise instructions. However, you will need to take the 'Lagos Este' exit from the A22. If you feel you need directions from there to your apartment (Marina Club isn't it?) just shout.

Definitely need air cond Doe.

Have just done a quick, rough search for 14th-28th July and cheapest with air cond (it states in the info ie Fiat Punto
5 Doors, 5 Seats, Radio, Air-Cond and Power Steering) works out at £236 with travel rent.

I'd go back and double check as you will need it - it's heaven

The first time we went there was a map and the guy in the car park gave us instructions. We landed late at night and found our way to meet our key holder (at Pingo Dolce supermarket) without any problems (were really smug with ourselves for not getting lost :rofl ) Our apartment by the way is next door to where you are staying so we did the same route.

We found driving (well hubby did - I navigate  ) around the Algarve no problem at all. Keep eyes peeled in the centres for zebra crossings immediately after you exit a roundabout, they can catch you out as they are not always highly visable.

:kiss to you both. 236 seems like a good deal particularly if you trade it against what the 4 of us would have to pay for a transfer of some kind to Lagos.

We have a 'crack of dawn' type flight so we will have all day to try to find our way west, I imagine we will not be allowed into our apartment till 3pm so I think even we can manage it in 5 or 6 hours.
Edit: only just seem your second post Glynis. We were in the Algarve in 1999 and 2000 and hubby drove both times but neither from the airport.

I do remember walking round the Marina and eating lunch there in '99 when it seemed new. I think I read that the main road (motorway?) that runs along the coast has been improved since we were last there, so that will be interesting to see.

Just a thought .... I think I'm right in saying that Travel Rent don't have any cars without aircon. Hubbie is out at the moment so I'll check with him later, but I think we hired a car without aircon when we went in the Winter and got one with aircon as that's all they have.

I don't know whether you're confused, Doe, but Travel Rent is the Portuguese firm Economy Car Hire use out there. They used to have a couple of others too but we haven't checked lately.
