We've just got back from our first visit to Cyprus last night and it was the most expensive holiday we've had for years. We stayed in Protaras. Somehow we managed to spend £650 in a week and there are only 2 of us, thank god we haven't got any kids!!! We have 3 to 4 beach holidays a year, last year we went to Spain, Greece and Turkey and last week in Cyprus was easily the most expensive by over £200.
We are not extravagant, didn't do any trips or hire a car - all our money went on food, drink and sunbeds!! I didn't even have an ice cream and only had one dessert on our last night.
Sorry I can't give you prices in euros but a pint of local beer was anything between £1.60 - 2.50 Cypriot pounds. A meal for two with 1/2 litre of wine was £25 - 30 Cypriot pounds. 1/2 litre of local house wine in a restaurant is £3.75 - £4.00 Cpriot pounds.
Not very impressed with Protaras, it's a bit too commercial for us. However, the weather was fantastic, Nicolas taverna is superb (we ate there 5 nights out of 7) and Fig Tree Bay was lovely.

Thanks

I was in in Spain & Fuerteventura last year and found it cheap - A pint of local for 2.60 euros about 2 pound sterling. Hope I did not book the wrong holiday - I am staying in the rising star.

Hi Gal, we were in Nerja, Spain, last June and in Tenerife February this year - Protaras was definitely loads more expensive.
Sometimes instead of wine I like to drink a pint of cider and soda water. In one bar during a happy hour they wanted to charge 95 cents for the half of cider and £1 Cypriot for the soda water :yikes thats about £1.30 sterling just for water, making the total cost for the drink about £2.40. At home in the pubs we drink in (in London) I pay just for the half of cider, £1.40 sterling.
And then the manager got stroppy and agressive when we questioned the price!

Hi all,

Don't doubt you Retsina - it is quite easy to pay those prices in the tourist areas.
However, you can find much cheaper...

We go to Cyprus normally 3 or 4 times a year and last time, in April, as an example, we had full meze for two, 2 large keos and 2 large white wines (and free brandy afterwards!) and it came to CYP£15.40.

I fully accept that this was outside of the tourist areas, but this is where the best deals (and, in my opinion, food) are to be had.

I know one restaurant that was doing a large keo and a large white wine for 95c

Hope this helps

No problem Racheluk2001 :)
I was staying in Deryneia, which is just to the North of Pernera.

The restaurants to which I refer are the Fernagin, which is in Deryneia near to the Folkloric museum, and the Green Garden, which is a bit further (but worth it in my opinion) in Vrysoulles.

Thomson used the Fernagin for their "Cyprus Night" last year.

There is also the Misohoro in Deryneia, just behind the church on the main road through. There are many, many more I could add to this short list.

As I said - I know these are all out of the tourist areas, but they really are worth the short(ish) travelling.

Again, this is all my opinion only.

Links are to Marions website. I hope thats OK.

Deryneia is a lovely town though so well worth a visit anyway and only about 10 mins from Pernera (15 mins from Protaras) and thats on a scooter so a taxi would be even less.

I haven't eaten there but may try it this year. I normally eat in Pernera or on the strip but still dont find it that extortionate.

I was eating steaks for C£4.50 and Kleftiko for C£5.50.

Personally I think thats an ok price when on holiday.

I hope I can still get a table now when we go over

Best to book at Misohoro - especially at weekends.

PPS @ Cardiff Lad - when are you over later this year?
Do we miss you (again)? We are there 20th Sep - 1stOct.

Not sure Ady as I haven't booked as yet. I'm looking at the last week in September, first week in October and check the best prices.
If I do the last week in September i'm there the same time.

I'll let you know.

Rachaeluk2001: Sorry - I am not very good on the Paphos area, but I am sure someone will come up with a recommendation.

Cardiff Lad: WRC Cyprus Rally is on 22nd - 24th September - thats what swung that week for me ;)

We had a meze (local dishes) last night including drinks for less than a tenner a head, just keep out of the tourist areas just as you should in any holiday resort, providing you have transport, Cyprus is not expensive and cheaper than Spain, just have to put some effort in, if you are in the Pafos area try any of the smaller villages dotted around, you can still buy set menus in Kato Pafos for about £7 cyp pounds, this will be a three course dinner but not local food, many cafe's and restaurants put boards outside you can see what you will be paying for, but a tenner is all you should need to spend for each person, less for kids stuff, use your feet and look around, I can assure you that cheap drink and food can easily be found! I know I do it all year!!

Ady I think you said before that the rally is in Limassol which is a bit far from Pernera even with a scooter lol.

I'm still looking at that week or the week after though.

Generally speaking you will find that prices in the tourist areas are significantly higher than in the villages well away from the tourist centres.

In the tourist areas, don't be surprised if you have to pay 2.60 Euros for a pint of Keo, in the villages you'll pay around 1.75. Food is also more expensive.

Many of the tourist watering holes and eateries are only open during the season and this is when they have to make their money.

Regards,

Morning Nigel, I feel done paying £1.50 a pint or rather a large bottle, is it more expensive in your local than mine? in fact Ollie's in my village is £1.20cents a large bottle of Keo/Calsb....I only usually pay your prices in top restaurants...are they seeing you coming!! :D have a good day.. 8)
