Goa State Disaster Management Authority
I would really love to sit in on one of their meetings!
I wonder if they are there to prevent or promote disasters?

what does 108 crore equal in sterling?

I could be totally wrong in my calculations but I am assuming that
1 Crore = 1 Million inr/-
1 Million inr-/ @ todays exchange rate = £14808
X 108 Crore= £1,599,264

just had a look on Wickepedia and it seems that one crore is equal to 10,000,000 rps
so, one crore is equal to approx £142,857
so,108 crore is equal to approx £15,428,556
surely that cant be right? £15.4 million

Looks like i was wrong in my calculations as i had misinterpreted the indian numbering system.
I ma not a salvage or demolition expert but £15 million certainly seems a lot of money.
It will be intersting to see what or where its spent.

surely for 15 million it would be cheaper to move candolim up the coast to Morjim!

                Ian has the right calculation

This should help us all work it out easier (slightly out of date though..)

Scrap value can't be worth much to whoever gets shut of it, but lets hope they get on with it - I guess they will have to start when the monsoons aren't causing problems, so lots of disruption for 'our' part of the beach...

Large amounts of Rupees are expressed in lakh rupees or crore rupees. A Lakh Rupee is one hundred thousand rupees and a crore rupee is ten million rupees

Ok.. forget the costs, the main thing is - what time of year do people think they will move it / how long to do it and by which method (I know they have said it's to be cut) but by sea or road.

I would guess that removal of the scrap metal would need to be by sea.
I reallly can't see trucks of the size required getting near enough without spending on new access etc.
To use the trucks presently available would mean cutting up into very small pieces.
but nothing in Goa surprises me!!!!

                no surprise there then

Why do I get visions of Gerry Cottle's Circus ?

As Madgavkar is a Goan company I would expect them to likely win the contract. They will be well versed in the Goan way of doing business, need I say more. Also the offer to remove the ship fo nothing, only being allowed to keep the scrap, will likely prove irresistable. From the article there's no mention of a time scale, so if thats the road they go down, god knows where this mess will end up
Titan has an international record and would have been the safer option, but the way they've handled this affair from the very beginning, it would be too much to expect Goa to do the sensible thing at this late stage.
