Discussions regarding holidays in Goa.
I agree Papa, it is heartbreaking to see. We used to use Blue Wave shack run by Patrick, his food was wonderful and it was so quiet down there but last year it was not there, we went to Calamari but looking at the Video, I think the square sandbags shown are the ones used to prop us Calamari, so I think we will be going further up again. It is just an inconvience for us but it is their livelyhood.

It goes on and on.

The lawyers and politicians keep getting richer.

The poor people trying to make a living have no chance of any justice or of making the living they deserve.

The whole dreadful saga seems to be a mirror image of the sad and sorry world we live in.

I do truly despair.

Just utterly tragic. I've watched the recent footage on You Tube and it is heartbreaking.

These people have elevated incompetence to levels that are almost unbelievable.

Round and round they go, this latest nonsense in the courts is beyond parody. The ship is no longer in a state that would allow it to be towed away, therefore why are they talking in court this way ? It will have to be cut up where she is, the time taken to do this, i.e. months or years, depends on who eventually gets awarded the contract, and when if ever they commence work. Or they can simply carry on with their games and corruption, and leave the monsoons over the years, to do the job for them. Either way I think Sinquerm beach as we knew it is gone for good, playing around with their giant inner tubes will solve nothing, I doubt, in fact if their is a solution. Certainly until the ship is cut up and removed the erosion of Sinquerm beach will continue to accelerate every monsoon.
Even knowing the way they handle their tourism, visa, shack licences etc etc I find it inconceivable what they have allowed to happen to one of theie principal beaches, even by the incompetant Goan standards its beyond belief.

A recent picture of the River Princess

River Princess falling to pieces
2010-07-11It is happening. The River Princess has developed such a huge crack that the deck has fallen in on the starboard side. Femino Fernandes of the River Princess Hatao Manch said the plates on the seaward side have come down. The Director of Tourism however says the crack is on the superstructure of the ship on the shore side. And anyways, he says, the River Princess has her hull stuck in 6 metres of sand, there is no way she will disintegrate completely.

The Collector North Goa says, hey, not to worry, the state government is planning to constitute a technical committee to inspect the vessel.
Environmentalist are looking worried, the beach is going to have shards of rusty fragments embedded in the sand which will be dangerous for swimmers and those walking on the beach.

Increasingly it looks like the River Princess is mourning the incarceration of the man who was Tourism Minister when she first ran aground. Mickkey Pacheco was the first Tourism Minister who started the trend of masterly inactivity. "If he is cracking up, in sympathy, so will I," is what the River Princess is reported to have said. We cannot corroborate that but circumstantial evidence proves it may be true. The crack had developed earlier, but only now the lashing waves have managed to actually break the ship.
An eerie parallel to the battering Mickky Pacheco has received in the public domain. He broke down too. At around the same time as the River Princess

Another step closer to the death of the River Princess.

After 10 years of blocking all attempts to move the vessel in the courts, now the mining company is offering to cut it up into five sections, and float it off for free !!!. A quick glance at the most recent picture would make it obvious to anyone that this option ran out long ago.
Perhaps the company hope to be granted their request, and then be able to say that they are now unable to complete it as the ship is now beyond salvage, and avoid any claims against them that may surface in years to come. You could'nt make it up, could you

I think it's becoming clearer with each visit to the court, that nobody, either the goverment, mineowners, tourism officials, or lawyers, have the least interest in resolving this issue. Whenever a solution seems iminent, some reason is found to stop things in their track. There's too much money to be made going round and round in circles at the courts, to ever get to a satisfactory conclusion. No self respecting salvage company will now waste time and money tendering, as even if successfull, before work commences, someone will take it back to the court, and the whole nonsense will start again.
Meanwhile Sinquerm beach is no more, as the ship continues to break up, Candolim beach will be next to suffer, still it's only their tourism business thats suffering, when did that fact ever bother anyone in power in Goa.

It seems to me that it is being used to help to destroy the beach shack industry, therefore helping hotels and restaurants keep the tourists away from the beach and in their premises instead. Its abit like the way the shack licenses are always delayed, we all know its because people with a vested interest are interfering.
It will probably only get removed when they realise that by breaking it up on the beach, they will kill off a lot of the shacks in the area and by not clearing the scrap from the sand tourists will not use the "poisoned area".

The latest twist

So now, the mining company who over the last 10 years have blocked all attempts to salvage the ship, have been awarded the job, they have no experience of salvage, but as they are going to do it free, that wont matter. I expect they will send a man aboard with a hacksaw, this may take some time, but who cares, it's only the tourism business that will suffer. Of all the lunacy over this matter in the last 10 years, this must surely be the most farcical yet
