Not a great deal of 'confirmed' info about this - I will get hold of Ganesh shack tomorrow and see what is happening.
To put an access road from James shack heading towards Calangute will take down Ganesh shack and at least 2 others.
From the main road (Fort Aguada road) the small road that is known as 'Whispering Palms road' is the road that they may well use (what for, who knows ?) is a very narrow road with a couple of bends in - not possible for 2 taxis to pass side by side. Follow this road down to the beach and the River Princess is in front of you. If they are to use this road there is no need to divert via James shack (left) ? Just head forwards.
If they are to cut and remove via the beach, they will have to be small enough chunks of scrap to fit on waggons that will fit the size of the road ? (or pull 2 hotels/shops and restaurants down). Wouldn't they be better loading scrap to Barges/tugs and going out to sea ?

Have been speaking with Ganesh shack today, and he has confirmed that he has been instructed to take his shack down for the road, along with at least 10 others (up to about the lifeguard house).
Was happy with Leeds getting a draw at Arsenal an hour ago, but really 'miffed' at this news.
He did say they have a meeting with the Minister about this and they will all hold out 'till the time comes, but they are wanting the road down before the monsoon.
Flights booked, but accomodation still on hold, so it looks as though we will be looking for a B&B / shack at the bottom of beach road - but not too close to Calangute.
Papa, what are your ideas on what they are up to ?

I hope they put this road off for another 6 weeks as Ganesh is our favourite shack and a great bloke. We were hoping that the road would be a bit further up and closer to boat. We've already lost Baywatch shack at Sinquerim by our hotel but our plan was to use Ganesh anyway. Not happy despite watching my team win at Scunthorpe!!!!

What about all the shacks that have paid their licence fees, will they be compensated?

The Princess has to go but it looks like being very messy.

Should'nt imagine they will waste any time getting started, they've lost a couple of months already. Unless of course someone drags it back to the High Court, that would'nt surprise me, Goa being Goa. Most vested interests in Goa are anti shacks anyway, so I dont imagine anyone in Gov. will be loosing any sleep over the shacks that are goig to suffer, not only the ones coming down, but any in the vicinity, that will be affected by the noise, pollution etc.

This is sad Spike. Im pleased The Rp is finally going (If it does) But like you ive lost my fav place to hang in the day. Im worried what mess they will make at that end of the beach as well. Plus Debbie and sendra and all the other sellars will be out of business on the road from the Sunset Beach/Whispering Palms.

Will have to be a very strong road to hold the weight of those trucks, even when empty.
Compensation ? The way they go about it - who knows, but I guess they will only be offered the fees back. I will keep in touch to find any more news and post asap.
It's not just going to be a downer for us Ganesh shack lovers, but many more also - along with the poor sods who will not know about this and have booked in that area.
Yes we all want it removed, but by road is a disaster.

Having read the news report , I notice that it says"barricade the beach where the scrap is to be stored".
Now, I realise that we all assume that they mean until it's loaded to trucks etc for removal.
BUT, maybe what we will see is the movement of the ship from the sea to the beach for the next few years whilst they sort out the customs issues

Quite possibley, this being Goa. Also I would image this is also going to mean it will be impossible to walk from Candolim along Sinquerm beach to the steps at the Taj, not good news for dedicated beach walking nuts such as myself. Another thing is, it will likely debar people getting to Calamari shack, which is used by quite a few poster here, by the beach route from Candolim, so it's not just the shacks in the immediate vacinity that will suffer.

I dont think anyone is suggesting they are going about it the wrong way, the way they are going to go about it, and the route being taken is unfortunatley the only feasable way at this late stage, The mistake was made about 10 years ago, when it was'nt pulled off promptly on a high tide by a couple of tugs.
People are merely expressing their concern for the unavoidable consequences that are about to follow the salvage operations.

Davewales - Yes it's gonna cause me problems, and many others - pretty obvious I would have thought..Don't get me wrong on this, I want it gone like everyone else, and what do I know about ship removal..erm. nothing. But reading what I did last year about cutting and removing, this would be done with boats and taken out to sea and not via the road - have you been down that road ?

I also thought that removal by water would have been the best option, even if only because the scrap would go directly into a port which is already under customs control.
I notice that they never tried my earlier solution, which involved filling the hull with Helium filled ballons

On a brighter note, when it is cleared there will be a lovely new road to the beach presumably with a large car parking area !

I fear that although it would be preferable, the seaward route would be a non starter. To get in boats or barges of a sufficient size in to take out large segments of scrap, would mean dredging out a sufficient depth of channel to facilitate this, it would also likely have to be done after each high tide, and would likely not be cost effective. The Alang breakers who are doing the job, method of work is to burn off large segments, drag or winch them up the beach and then cut to the size required for removal from the site. I would image the profit margin on this job will be minimal, as anything of value that could be moved (such as the copper cables they now say are missing) left a decade ago. The only worhwhile scrap left will likely be in the main deisel engine and the propeller, both of course are at the stern of the boat, which is of course at he shoreward side and most easily removed shorewards. As far as the customs nonsense, India must be the only place that has a cusoms duty for rust, which, on the main is all thats left after 10 years.
