After David and Gower's reassurance, and having managed to check in on line for the flight to Billund which 'disappeared', I stopped worrying, but my friend in Denmark was still panicking and rang Billund airport to check with them. The lady she spoke to confirmed the flight but said it was the fourth query she had received that day on the subject and she was fed up with Ryanair and would make a formal complaint!

I have just booked return flights with Ryanair for two friends and myself. I paid with my Visa Debit Card (not credit card) and was charged 10.00 for each of us for using this as a card charge. Surely this (£30.00) should be unacceptable. I wrote twice to complain and to add insult to injury, received no reply at all. Has anyone else experienced this?

Pretty much everyone who's booked flights with Ryanair! These charges (handling fees) are part of the booking conditions; there's no way round them if you want to pay by that method. The charges are currently £4.75 / 5 euro a time. Ryanair are very cheap when it comes to the price of flights, but the costs can soon mount with the addition of charges, luggage, priority boarding etc. The best card to use with Ryanair is Electron, theres currently are no charges (handling fees) when using that method. It's unlikely you'll hear back from Ryanair as the charges are stated on their website and you click to accept them when going through the booking process (Terms and conditions).

Your problem here is that however outrageous the charge may be it is clearly shown on the website and you did accept it.

They claim it's because of their credit card processors (see http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/news.php?yr=08&month=jul&story=cst-en-040708) - maybe they'd be better off changing to the company that easyjet or Flybe use as they can still charge much less for debit than credit cards. They don't don't charge for Electron either.

And if course if you pay the lower fees, such as using a debit card or an electron card, you are not covered by the CC if you need to get your money back ......... subject to a minimum spend of £100. They've got you whatever you do!!!

Ryanair to double airport check-in fee

Ryanair is doubling its airport check-in fee to £20 per person per flight from May in a bid to discourage passengers from using it.

From October 1, airport check-in will be phased out altogether and desks will no longer be available at any Ryanair airport.

The changes will be introduced in three phases.

In phase 1, from March 19, Ryanair's web check-in service will be extended to non EU/EEA citizens, passengers travelling with checked baggage and reduced mobility customers.

Customers choosing web check-in and travelling with only carry-on bags will not pay a fee, but any passengers with bags to check in will pay £5 per person per flight.

Passengers who wish to use airport check-in will be charged a fee of £10 per person per flight at the time of booking.

In phase 2, from May 1 all new bookings will be required to use web check-in, and the use of traditional airport check-in desks will be phased out over the summer months.

Airport check-in charges will be increased to £20 per person per flight in order to dissuade passengers from using it.

In phase 3, from October 1 airport check-in desks will no longer be available at any Ryanair airport.

All passengers will be required to web check-in and those who have checked in bags will use the airport "bag drop" desks.

From this date, children under the age of 16 will no longer be able to travel unaccompanied and passports and national ID cards will be the only accepted forms of photo ID on Ryanair flights.

Ryanair's Stephen McNamara said web check-in was currently used by 75% of passengers.

He claimed the removal of airport check-in would allow the airline to reduce its airport and handling costs and keep fares down.

There's a very clear Q&A article in today's Times Online.

Oh well, so it came to pass .............. etc etc

So it's perhaps starting to save your coins so you can use the toilet in flight ........................

just seen this on the ryanair site.

you have got to admire MOL's sense of humour and ability to latch on to a good publicity stunt.
bet its on the news by tomorrow morning.

What the posting from Travelmole missed out is that.......

From Phase 2 - May 1st - you will have to pay a Web Check in fee of £5 per person per flight :yikes
It looks like there is no way of avoiding this charge unlike the present - use Electron, web check in, no bags etc

Shame, I have been become quite skilled at only paying the 'headline' price of the flights - £22.50 for 3 people to Ibiza for a 5 day break during Easter week :)

Unfortunately we cannot reproduce the following articles for copyright reasons, but a couple of interesting stories made the headlines this week about cancellation of a Ryanair flight in Poland, which allegedly left UK passengers stranded there for 4 days:

Fury as Ryanair leave 100 Scots stranded in Poland (12 March)

Ryanair finally agrees to foot bill for stranded Scots holidaymakers (14 March)

It will be interesting to see how this develops and whether passengers will actually be reimbursed or compensated.

Just remembered another Ryanair Policy. Recently they have pulled out of flying from Blackpool (not that they flew to many places from there anyway) They stated the reason was because Blackpool airport had introduced a charge of £10 for each Adult traveling (for Airport improvements) What Ryanair forgot to tell people is, that the Airport has introduced Free car parking instead, so this alone is a saving for most people. Not a lot of people realize how big Blackpool Airport is getting and I use it a lot, so much easier to get to. A lot of people I talked to on holiday didn't even know it existed. Karen

Perhaps not as high as Ryanair's charges, but you will find that Easyjet also have various add-ons, including a booking fee and debit card fee.

Dear Mr O'Leary,

You've missed something. Look another additional charge that you can hide and levy on customers. Very surprised that you have allowed the American's to come up with this one before Ryan Air :duh

Spirit Airlines in America have started charging customers a $4.90 each way fee, or more correctly a "passenger usage fee" :really , for booking a ticket on their web site or by phone. Unless you make a reservation at one of their ticket desks at an airport this passenger usage fee will be charged on top of the ticket price. Apparently the charge is levied to absorb costs associated with running the company's web site and call centre. Wouldn't that be a business overhead?

A friend living locally has told me that Ryanair plan to scrap their Basel-Dublin service from June. I cannot find anything formal to substantiate this, other than using the 'try to book it and fail' approach on their website.

Can anyone shed some light on what Ryanair's cancelled routes and new routes for the near future are likely to be? Many thanks!

From July 2009 Ryanair will close four routes from Dublin
Basel, Doncaster, Oporto and Teesside, and

Expected reduced frequencies on eight more routes from Dublin to Aberdeen, Biarritz, Billund, Bournemouth, Carcassonne, East Midlands, Malaga and Rome (Ciampino).
