Flight Only / Airline and Airports

Discussions relating to flight only, airlines and airports.

Ummm....despite all the "issues" with Ryanair they actually have about the most newest fleet of aircraft that are flying around.....they use the 737 800 series while EasyJet move towards an all Airbus fleet.

It's a case of playing O'Leary at his own game - he will give you cheap flights IF....
You check in online, only have 10kg hand luggage and pay by Electron.

It's pretty easy to work out your 'extras', so once you have selected a flight - thats the point you decide if it's the price you want to pay.

I think the aircraft are all pretty new, if a bit over the top with the decor !

Sorry I stand corrected, but I still don't like there stealth priceing. I know all airlines do it to an extent, but not to the excess ryanair do it.

I don't get why people get so bothered about all the add on costs and start saying they'll fly with other airlines instead... surely you just price up the trip, with the options you personally want, and book the cheapest!!

Option 1. £0.01 flight, £10 to check in, £10 bags, £10 taxes, £10 credit card = £40.01
Option 2. £90 flight (but no extra charges)

Which do you book?......I know which I do :que

I see the same argument on the tour ops forums.. usually goes like this... "Thomas Cook only give 15kgs and charge if you want another 5kgs so I'm not going with them, I'm only going to book with Thomson cos they give you 20kgs"...... and when you look they're paying MORE than £5 each extra for the package!!!!!

phild074, I agree with you.

To me, it the TOTAL cost of the flight after taking into account the convenience of flight times, departure airport, arrival airport etc.

In fact, we do the same with holidays.
It may be cheaper to book a holiday (flight/hotel) to say, Greece but with the exchange rate of € to £, the total amount you spend may be more than paying a higher holiday price for say a long haul destination but where the food and drink is cheaper.
Sorry :offtop

when i book flights/holidays my first criteria is flight times we want to arrive at our hotel before 1700 hrs [local time] and depart to arrive back in the UK by 100 hrs then destination then price.. i see no point in cheap night flights as you pay for your hotel from midday on date of arrival till midday date of departure so with a night flight you could spend only 2 or 3 hrs in a room on arrival that you have paid a day for also if HB or AI you have missed meals that you have paid for.. then when you leave you either have to vacate your room by mid day stow the bags somewhere and fly home in the cloths you have spent most of the day in or pay extra for late departure either of these debases any saving you may have made on the flights

What you're describing is the science of "Generalised Costing". I say science but black magic would be a better term! There is a healthy little trade amongst certain transport consultants who can put this into an impressive formula to prove business cases for or against (depending upon who is paying them!) projects. And to get back on topic, it's something which Ryanair in particular need to look at. Look at a journey to Frankfurt, Ryanair may be cheaper for the flight - but you've got to work your way through the mass of add-ons to be sure. Even so, this doesn't get you to Frankfurt, but to Hahn which is actually closer to Luxembourg. So then you have to add on the cost of the bus to Frankfurt, and the journey time, and the inconvenience of the infrequency of the bus. Now if you fly to the real Frankfurt with Lufthansa you don't have to worry about add-ons, you still have to pay the transfer cost, but it's much less, the journey is much shorter and the trains run every few minutes. So it's a more attractive proposition - and that has a value which can be converted into cash.

In my example I only meant that you'd book the cheaper of the 2 flights and ignore how the price is made up! Clearly, the times of the flights and the airports (Dep and Arr) are very, very important (I am banned from booking night flights now by my g/f after a 4.30am departure from HER a few years ago... and that means that I will pay premium for day flights) But I'll book the cheaper flight of the available ones that match my requirements.

Can anyone please help!
I had already booked a flight from Gatwick to Alicante for 2 of us next week. I have just been on to the website and added luggage for 1 of us. It has only charged me for the luggage and is still saying I can check in online.
Can you now check in online and deposit your case somewhere at the airport?
Sorry if I sound a bit dumb! It's one of those days! :(

wheatcrunchie,

The person named who doesn't have luggage will be able to check-in online, but the person with luggage must check-in at the desk in order to check the luggage in. Ryanair don't have / use fast bag drop off desks.

Thanks Darren
But I just don't understand why it didn't charge me for airport check in.
There was no option.
We'll both have to check in at the airport because the other passenger is my niece and she is only 12.
I hope I don't turn up and then they charge me for trying to check in.

Interesting....... :think

I would actually try to check in online as it is now offered on the Ryanair website as an option !
i.e. Online Check In with 1 Bag

Can't see it would do any harm - if you have already checked in then they can't charge you for airport check in can they ?
If you don't check in online then they might well charge you both.

Just a thought.

Not sure if I'm allowed to quote the website but I'm sure a Mod will remove it if that's the case.....

Failing that - here's the link http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/faqs.php?sect=chk&quest=whoco

John.

Edit:-

Just been crawling around in the Ryanair FAQs ......

It seems that you will now be charged £5.00 for online check in if you are checking in baggage.......
so unfortunately it looks like wheatcrunchie may be charged after all :(
another edit:
Airport check is now £10 per person each way :yikes

Sorry John, but for copyright reasons, you may not reproduce from that site. However the info is still available via the weblink provided.

2 of us went from Stansted to Valencia (and back) in Feb for 4p.

1p each way, no taxes to pay. We had no hold luggage and paid by Visa Electron - so no cards fees.

Sadly no-one mentions these excellant value flights in the press / on TV only the high cost extremes, so I guess saying you went to Spain and back for 4p (for 2 people) isnt good press / TV.

All I can say is thankyou Ryanair - keep up the good work but £3 for a cup of tea is a little high - and no I didn't buy one ! I had the choice.

I find its only those that dont like the rules that moan so if you dont like Ryanair fly with someone else -it's that simple.

Chris

PS We came back last night on a Monach flight from Tenerife and the poor people in standard seating had less legroom than on a Ryanair flight and they paid Monach prices ! but of course they had the added benefit of getting allocated 'cattle class' seating (ie told where to sit) rather than having the choice of finding their own.

Thanks John.
I think I will do what you suggested, check in online and then see what happens. It does imply on the website that you can check in online if you have baggage. I think I will just play dumb! :que
If they charge me at the airport, they charge me, I can live with that. If they don't it's a bonus.
Thanks for all your help! :tup

Right just checked in online for outbound and inbound flights. Printed off the boarding pass and it states on there 'Check the airport monitors for bag drop desk + boarding gate information'.
So...........think that should be it!
