They might be under no legal obligation but more and more cruise operators do seem to be applying the same rules. Perhaps because British passengers now expect that and feel more confident about complaining about smoky conditions?

as for sma saying about the cancer and things with staff i dont think its staff they worried about because if they did the staff wouldnt
be working rediculious hours for the wage they receive which is totally rubbish
was on destiny twice in last month still love the ship and the smoking wasnt to bad but most nights it was calm outside
i would hate to see some of our o.a.p outside if therte was heavy winds they would be over the edge
so come on smokers get your opinion heard email thomson and tell them what you think
Saying that smoking is not a problem for those working in bars etc just go back and think of Roy Castle and many others like him.
Some hotels now are totally non smoking where others have many non smoking rooms but you have to go outside to actually smoke.
Some years ago I was in Australia and there people even go outside in their own homes to smoke. I see people who live near me actually smoking outside their own homes.
My brother and his wife gave up smoking as soon as their Daughter (who lives 50 miles away) told them she was pregnant. Now 3 years later they are both non smokers and have 2 other Grandsons.
I think that to try to influence Thomsons you are on a hiding to nowhere. They have obviously done their homework and know that for the most part people want. Sorry but true!

This is not a debate for or against smoking or the reasons for the ban. This topic is purely to list the ships that do or do not allow smoking onboard.
Sorry! I will be on Celebrity in August and November and they have adopted no smoking even on Stateroom balconies since 1st August and this has also been causing problems for many already booked prior to the new rule.

not 1st August
According to the web site
Smokers should look at switchig to electric cigerettes ( I am ) you can smoke these anywhere because they give no fumes off just water vapour. They are also without any of the harmfull chemicals that normal cigs have
They are classed as a quiting aid so it gets around the ban and isnt offencive to anyone
It will be funny to see non-smokers holding thier noses and waving thier hands when no smell comes off them
I am sure some do it just to make a point
Sue I think its 1st October the new rules come in not 1st August

Sorry it is the new dress code that is being implemented on the 1st August with Celebrity
We received a letter today advising a change in smoking policy on Ventura, beginning date is our sailing on 10th October. The precise wording quoting directly from the letter is as follows:
"Since the introduction of UK legislation last year, we have been closely monitoring the reaction of our passengers to smoking in our ships. It is very clear that the acceptance of smoking inside the public areas in our ships has declined to such an extent that we have decided to alter our current policy. Therefore, with effect from 10 October 2008, smoking will no longer be permitted inside any areas of Ventura including passenger cabins. Smoking will still be allowed on cabin balconies and on certain areas of the open decks."
Only comment I would make is pity the poor non-smoking passengers on a balcony next to smoking passengers.
The letter received is specific to Ventura but, given the wording used, I would imagine it will be for all P&O ships, and possibly even all ships covered by the holding company, Carnival plc.
P&O from 1st October no inside smoking on Ventura. Oceana and Artemis There will be outdoor smoking areas and smoking on cabin balconies
Anyone know what the policy is on Carnival line? we have booked to do the Carribean over the New year with them.....and on their website it actually describes one of the bars as the ideal place to have a good cigar
just did a 3 day on the new Carnival Splendor. You can smoke in most of the bars.
Regards.

I really don't wish to cause a big debate on the rights and wrongs of smoking, but as things regarding smokers keep on changng I wonder if anyone can guide me to a cruise line (apart from pullamantur) that has at least one inside bar, apart from the casino, where smokers can go please?
Unfortunately some of the information earlier in the topic may also be out of date as ships are changing their policy all the time.
I booked with P&O on the Oceana and when I booked smoking was permitted in cabins, one lounge and on some open decks. I thought that policy would remain seeing as it was issused after the smoking ban came in in England. However I received a letter in January which said that it would no longer be permitted in cabins, only on balconies and one lounge.
Since then they have changed the policy again and smoking will on be permitted on some open decks and on balconies from 6 October.
As you can see, even with careful planning the policy can change between booking and sailing.
There is also another discussion HERE
I understand that Thomson's ships are now all non-smoking.
I believe you may have better luck with an Italian line such as MSC.
If you find any recent information I would be grateful if you could update this topic.

It was also allowed on the balconies.
We love cruising but are finding it more and more difficult to find a ship where we don't struggle with this, I know I should give it up, but think it may be cruising we give up on, which is a pity as it is our favourite holiday.
Fred Olsen have announced that from Jan 2009 no smoking will be allowed inside, the only places that you will be allowed to smoke will be on cabin balconies and designated places outside.
not allow smoking on balconies?
Does anyone know of a cruise line that does
Does anyone know of any cruise lines (apart from pullamantur) who have perhaps one bar where smoking is allowed?
Smokers beware booking Thomson cruise just by reading brochure.
July 2008 Edition (August 08----Oct 09) says,
"Smoking is only permitted in strictly designated areas.
Normally a smoking area can be found in one bar + on part of the open deck.
Smoking in cabins IS permitted, but for the comfort + safety of current + future guests we
strongly request that you refrain from doing so."
The first part seems clear,in one bar as before the ban, but the word NORMALLY worries me.
The second part is really ambiguous, does it mean you can smoke in cabin but if you are requested to refrain you can't smoke,or say its only a request + ignore it ??.
P.S Web site says "Smokin is not permitted anywhere inside the ship."
Just like revisiting the postings earlier in year.
Will Island Escape now become non-smoking ship, even on balcony.
Going on Pullmantur cruise this Sunday will post review on this thread on return.

You have found as I did that the policy can be changed mid-brochure and not just once.
We booked the Oceana back in October for this September. I checked the smoking policy at the time of booking and smoking was permitted in cabins, on balconies, in one bar and on one side of certain decks.
We received a letter in January stating that, from April, smoking was no longer permitted in cabins. Give P&O their due, we could have cancelled without penalty. However we had booked at an excellent price with £150pp OBC and wouldn't have been able to get that deal elsewhere.
They have since changed the policy again and from the day we disembarked, 4 October, smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the ship.
All I can suggest is that you make it a condition of booking that you reserve the right to cancel should the policy be changed before you have sailed.
If you would like a ship added so that you can post a review, let me know the details and I shall ask for it to be added.

Paid £550 for cruise + £60 Easyjet to barcelona.Good value as ship is A/I.
Anyone who has been on Thomson ships won't know difference in ship layout.
Smoking,,,,Yes you can smoke almost everywhere except restuarants + showlounge + i mean everywhere, cabins, corridors, casino + one side of all bars, all open decks.
Although it said pipes + cigars only outside,Spanish smoked inside + no one said a dickybird.
BUT this is not a cruise line for Brits at present as 95% of passengers are Spanish.
There was maybe 6 English on board + few Scandinavians (12).
The ship also picks up in Malta with maybe 50 people getting on/off.
The ship was probable only 40% capacity (2 dinner sittings changed to one),this @21:00 hrs.
The Spanish seems to love excursions (all full)+ on return to ship went for siesta until dinner, then show, then bed.At times it was like sailing on Marie Celeste, live band in main lounge @ 22:30 hrs playng to 4 people.
Also ALL entertainment.live bands etc in Spanish although Cruise News and all announcements in Spanish + English.
A one off experience !!!
