Booked a holiday via the Thomson Store in Horsham, spending over £4000.
A member of staff, who claims to be a "professional" after many years of service tells us, and I quote " You cannot book this holiday with us unless you take out our AXA insurance policy." When we asked why, as we usually get our own annual insurance, she told us " It is a new policy that has just come into action with Thomson".
Thinking nothing of it, we continued with our purchase.
After speaking with a friend who works for Thomson abroad we were then informed that what she said was complete lies and we had been intentionally misled so that the member of staff could make some commision.
We then went back into the store a few weeks later and asked to speak to her but find she is not in. We spoke to the manager instead and she did not take us seriously and said she would get the woman to contact us. Over one week later she finally called to say " Well it was a long time ago now, I do not recall the conversation we had", to later completely contradict herself by saying that she didnt say anything like that at all.
We argued that we would not have taken the insurance out if she hadnt said the above seeing as we usually do our own anyway. About ten minutes into the conversation she openly started loosing her temper as she was raising her voice at us and not letting us speak. All the while we stayed calm.
I think seeing as she had just taken alot of money off of us, we would recall the conversation extremely well and would never had taken the insurance as it was very expensive for what it was.
I have since, for months, been trying to contact Thomson about these lies and poor customer service and have continually been ignored.
I will NEVER use this travel agent again. They do NOT care for their customers at all. Only the money. I will also not give this fight up until I am served some justice in the matter. I am open to help if anyone who reads this can advise!!
Cheers!
Roger
It's all very well being wise after the event but for some time it has been illegal for companies to insist you take out their own insurance, though I believe they can (but seldom do) insist you have suitable insurance in place. I have had annual insurance through one of my credit cards for years but never been asked to prove this when booking a holiday. Do not let this rest. You spent a lot of money on the holiday and no doubt far more than necessary on the insurance element. The difficulty will be in proving coersion. Perhaps if you can provide evidence of how you have previously got insurance for holidays this may be a starting point.
I wouldn't let it rest. I doubt the agent herself made any commission on it, but the shop would have done!
That is a breech of FSA Regulations, complain to the FSA. Travel Agents are only allowed to offer advice, they cannot make these claims.
