I think quite a lot of us are in limbo at present and all we can do is sit tight and keep our fingers crossed. You have a few days yet before Tuesday so there is a chance it might have cleared by then.

Cosmos are now offering full refunds, as the Monarch flight to Goa, cancelled on Thursday is not being re-scheduled. People can get put on next Thursday's flight and go for one week, but there is no guarantee that flights will be safe to go even by then.

Have been studying the latest met office info up until 7am sat morning. It shows the northern part of the UK as clear of the ash cloud. Will be interesting to see what NATS says in the next few minutes.

"No-fly" to run until 07.00

No flights will be able to operate from airports in England and Wales until 07.00 at the earliest tomorrow morning.

The National Air Traffic Service extended the restrictions from 01.00 in an update this afternoon.

The move follows a review of latest Met Office information as the volcanic ash cloud moves south through the UK and the eruption in Iceland continues.

Air traffic control restrictions will be lifted in a large part of Scottish air space from 19.00 this evening.

This will allow flights to run from Scottish airports, Shetland, Orkneys and Northern Ireland.

Transatlantic flights will also be able to operate in this airpace, NATS said this afternoon.

"We are looking for opportunities when the ash cloud moves sufficient for us to enable some flights to operate under individual co-ordination with ATC, " a statement said.

"Some aircraft were able to operate at Manchester this morning, although restrictions are now re-applied to Manchester."

There may be a chance of flights operating from the north into Newcastle after 01.00 in the morning.

A further review of Met Office information is planned at 20.30 this evening.

"We continue to work with airports, airlines and the rest of Europe to understand and mitigate the implications of the volcanic eruption," NATS said.

A BAA spokesman said: We have been advised by National Air Traffic Services that English and Welsh airspace remains closed, and that all flights to and from Heathrow and Stansted are suspended until 07.00 tomorrow at the earliest.

"Passengers should not travel to these airports until further notice, and should remain in touch with their airlines.

"Flights within Scotland and between our Scottish airports and North America and Ireland could resume from 19.00 today, but we strongly advise passengers to check the status of their flight with the relevant airline before travelling to the airport. Not all flights will operate from these airports.

"We expect NATS to provide a further update around 20.30 today.

"We appreciate the continued patience of passengers at this difficult time and will provide updates as often as possible."

A positive story for my friends. Virgin operated a flight from MCO to GLA today that was originally bound for LGW. Passengers were then bussed to London. That meant an aircraft was available in GLA so my friends that are waiting to meet their cruise in Barbados (the boat has been held for passengers waiting to fly out) are now on the motorway heading north from Manchester to fly out from GLA to Barbados. Great planning and work by Virgin so at least some passengers are starting to move :tup

Would that be the Virgin Group that runs trains from Glasgow to London in half the time the bus takes?? Maybe the airline people saw how much the rail people charge for Anytime tickets!!

Just received from FlyBe

Flybe add extra flights as service resumes for Saturday 17th April

As you may be aware we have been experiencing significant disruptions to flights in the past 36 hours that have been caused by a large volcanic eruption in Iceland.

We are pleased to announce that normal flight service has returned at Flybe for flights operating across northern parts of the UK for tomorrow and therefore our great low fare flights are available online now for the following routes, plus as shown below we are adding extra capacity to ensure we rescue stranded passengers:

Belfast - Manchester (extra flights and capacity now available)
Glasgow - Manchester
Edinburgh - Belfast (extra flights and capacity now available)
Manchester - Edinburgh
Manchester - Inverness
Manchester - Isle of Man
Belfast - Glasgow
Belfast - Newcastle
Leeds Bradford - Belfast
Isle of Man - Liverpool

With flights from just £21.50 one way Flybe has millions of last minute spring seats on sale to 70 destinations across the UK and Europe.

For those of you looking to travel to Scotland or Northern Ireland from the Midlands, why not take the short drive and fly from Manchester instead. With the extra capacity we will be offering on flights to Belfast, and the high frequency schedule we fly to Scotland, we will be able to ensure that you can still get to your destination during this difficult time.

We hope that the Met office and the National Air Traffic Service updates will allow Flybe to continue flying on Sunday; we therefore suggest you continue to check flybe.com for details.

Hubby has just told me that it was announced on the news that it could be 2 weeks before the ash cloud clears. He reckons that we might not get over to England a week today. Realistically how likely is it that things will be ok for next Friday evening or should we be looking at alternatives of either Sail & Rail or Eurolines.
