It's great that we can get some holiday favourites here with most supermarkets offering tzatziki, taramasalata, greek olives and even Total yogurt.
I love rizogalo (the chilled rice pudding with lemon and nutmeg), the nearest to it here is probably Muller Rice and there's just no comparison!
What do you miss?
Personally,i miss a delicious lamb dish called Keleftiko, and the exremely sweet Baclava, which my partner says is like eating a bag of sugar Have recently had Pastitsio from M&S,but like the other products, just dont taste the same unless their been consumed in Greece
we had a greek style barbie last year, ouzo and amstel to drink, greek salad, tzatziki, pitta, olives and greek meat balls(you have to soak the bread in ouzo they taste divine!)amongst other yummy goodies. It was a huge success and will be doing it again this year.I love the cheese pies they sell in the bakeries so nice and probably about a million calories!!Off to halkidiki in 14 days can't wait......
Hi I think the best meal in Greece is the stifado mmm just cant wait only 45 days to we hit Skiathos wish I could get it here.
We don't miss any of it because we have an excellent Greek Taverna right here where we live! All authentic greek food & wines and run by a cypriot family !
I must admit that a bowl of tzatziki eaten with fresh bread is my lunch time favourite and I shall try to ensure that beef stifado is my first main meal. However, it is the simple dishes that I enjoy the most such as the salad with a good feta and stuffed peppers or aubergines. The children are looking forward to kalamari and sword fish, whilst hubby lives on kleftiko.
The fact that everything is freshly prepared is wonderful. Can I wait 6 days!!!!!!!
hey Greeklass was going to say the same thing, local place about 3 minutes walk away, they are from Crete but have the most delicious food and cook all their meat over hot coals . They even have Mythos, altohugh there is nothing like sitting sipping a cold one on the beach
Fresh garlicky Tzatziki eaten with fresh bread and a bow of olives, and a small can of Amstel ...
We loved the Gyros Pittas.
We've tried to make them at home but they are never as good, the tsatsiki we've bought over here is nowhere near as nice as in Greece

its much nicer to make your own tatziki, using total yoghurt of course, trick is to get all the moisture out of the cucumber first, chop it into a seive, and let it sit there sprinkled with a little salt, makes the perfect cucumber for tatziki, actually if im totally honest, my dad makes it better than me i dont have the patience haha
Could you tell me the other ingredients please, I might give it a go ,although going by my past efforts I'm not holding out much hope
Thanks
Rac
She said the difference is the Cinnamon as the Greek one is more bitter than we get here, so is much better for savoury dishes. Her tip is buy it while you're out there!
6 weeks, 5 days to go!
Thanks a lot for that Masked Marauder, I can't wait
Hey Rac - if you fancy trying your hand at other greek dishes they post a new recipe every month on
Thanks Marcuschap72
I tried Emmabee's tip about making meatballs with bread soaked in ouzo last night. I also put a small chunk of feta in the middle of each one and cooked them in a nice tomato sauce - delicious
Check out the following site:-
We miss everything, because out there someone else prepares and cooks the food.
I really miss a good shrimp Saginaki , the feta cheese over here is just not the same
