We were actually in between 2 resorts Stalis and Hersonnisos. Both of which had your usual mix of shops, bars, clubs etc.... Beaches were small but clean and very nice.
Hersonnisos was the larger and livelier of the 2 places and would cater well for both families and groups. Where as Stalis was a bit quieter, but being close to Malia would also be suitable for both.
I'd highly recommend both places.

Although there were a few shops and bars the resort was fairly deserted and to reach more lively areas a bus or taxi was required and although taxis were easily available (if a little expensive) there was at least a 20 minute walk for a bus (apart from 2 each each day to Heraklion and one other major town).
We were looking for a quiet holiday and therefore didn't mind too much, but I would say this resort is a little too quiet.

Hersonissos is a very clean town, miles of beaches, and very cheap and accessible. The harbour is worth a visit at night, only costs about 5-6 Euro from the Hotel. Definetly a Family resort, comes highly recommended

There is something for everyone. Water park, beach, bars, shops. Your holiday can be as lively or as quiet as you want it to be. The old villages at the back of the town are very good for traditional nights out. Recomend it to anyone.

Despite the grim hotel Hersonissis itself is really lovely with loads to do durning the day and night. Try one of the boat trips which cost around 15 Euro per person - they include lunch, wine, fishing, snorkling, swimming and a vist to a small water park (beware of the transport from the boat to the water park - they must have no MOT system in Crete - it was an 20ish yr old Hi-Ace Van).
Also try the water park - Water city, well worth a visit and not bad at 15 euro entrace for the day. Try to get a bus though cos a taxi will cost 25 Euro each way from Hersonnis.
There are plenty of good bars and restaurants with reasonable prices - you can get a pint for 1 euro in some of them.
Overall we had a great time and would come back but Never to the Vassos Hotel again!!

This resort is situated between two towns which were a 15 minute walk eitherway. Both rather basic but provided us with many restaurants if we fancied a change from eating at the hotel. The locals were very friendly, speaking english and made you feel very welcome to be in their country.
There were a variety of beaches to choose from and the Star Beach complex was an ideal place for families to spend the day.
Going in the middle of October was ideal not too many tourists and the weather was absolutely fantastic.

Europa Beach is almost at the end of a quiet road,with a few shops, tavernas, car hire places along the front and there is the village of Analipsi about 25 mins walk. This has more shops and tavernas.
Back along the shore are more hotels and a watersports centre - about 20 minutes walk from hotel. There are bicycles for hire at the hotel and there is a bus to Heraklion daily from th hotel for 2 euros.
The beaches are all nice and clean although there is some litter but not much. Some of the beaches have a flag system for safety.

The resort of Hersonissos was just amazing. There was plenty to do, loads of shops and pubs along the front and also loads of side streets with shops leading up to the little villages, or you could take the little toy town train into the villages.
It was very clean and if you get up early enough about 7:30,you will see all of the shop owners outside actually mopping the floor.
There wasnt really much entertainment, it was just amuse yourselves really, but that is so easy to do.
The beach we went to nearly everyday was gorgeous. It was little which was good because it was never overcrowded. We got to know the bloke that worked there too.
I would definatley visit this resort again. Its so depressing being back, i only got back yesterday though!!

The resort was a tacky toursit area. Could not find the authentic Crete.
