Beach good, water sports fantastic. Bars, restaurants and shops a 15min walk along promenade.
Cafe on the Rocks a must (shows all Sky football matches). Harbour looks stunning at night.
The sun setting behing the mountains is breathtaking.
Wonderful resort.

Very clean, unspoiled and quiet. Nowhere near as commercialised as Malia for example. The general concensus from the local bar/resteraunt owners was this was how they liked it.Most of the bars/eateries we visited were very good value for money.Pay a visit to Zorba's On The Rocks, located next to the bar with the parrot outside on the promenade, its great for big screen footy and tall cool beers (ask for the local brew-Mythos)the food is also excellent. Dont bother wih the local market-its like a bring and buy. The local shops/boutiques have far better stuff on offer.Dont forget to haggle on price.

Must admit, we didn't venture too far from the hotel, as there was all we needed there. We did go down the promenade and had a couple of lovely meals in Zorbas - highly recommended.
The beach was very shingly rather than sand, and the shingle was black, a bit offputting I thought. The beach is clean and there are sunbeds available for no extra charge and a few different watersport activities.

Irapetra town seemed OK but as we were all inclusve at the Petra Mara Hotel we didn't venture into town as much as we would have done on a self catering holiday.
It's a fairly quite resort where tourism hasn't fully taken off but there is enough restaurants and bars along the sea front for a pleasant evening out.
There are regular shops behind the sea fron for clothes, chemists etc. There is also a few internet cafes to contact home (€1.25 per half hour).
As typical of Greece, there are many part built houses or buildings, many with 1 floor complete with people living their and the rest of the building unfinshed.

The slides and pools provided excellent entertainment for both the kids and adults alike. Be careful of the slippery tiles around the pools. You will slip if you run!
The entertainment is run all day by the reps, and activities were varied for all ages. The kids club is brilliant in both the age groups we had ours in.
The evening entertainment is fun and a good laugh, but if you want to see a West End show, go to London! There is a lot of audience participation, and the more you participate, the more you'll enjoy it!
Remember that this countries temp is +- 40C - so if you fancy a stroll, there are banks, pubs, pharmacies and shops +- 2 miles away from the resort.
If you don't remember beach towels, and you need to buy them, the shop in the resort sells them for 6 Euro, but if you walk out the resort and visit the 2nd shop on the left, they have everything at half the price of the shop in the resort. An example of the resort shop rip-off prices were the suntan cream. Resort shop 14.50 Euro - outside 9.50 Euro. The resort shop is a massive rip off, except for the water. 50 cents for a litre bottle.
All in all, we had a Fantastic holiday, and will visit this hotel and resort again.

Ierapetra is a pleasant resort very laid back and un-touristy. If you're looking for clubs and Brit bars then this is not the place for you. It has a nice variety of shops but the shop keepers are rather eager for your business and can be rather overpowering if all you want to do is browse.
The beach is very gritty especially around the the far end by the Petra Mare hotel and the sea bed is rocky and you can go out of your depth very quickly. The watersports are excellent and proved to be very popular though during our stay got cancelled for 5 days due to rough seas.
Ierapetra is quite a windy place but also very hot with temperatures reaching 45degs so you do have to be careful and always have the suncream on hand.
Personally we wouldn't visit this resort again but that's mainly because we like to try new places.

The beach is grey looks like ash and is impossible to walk on without shoes absolute rubbish ,the resort of Ierapetra around the hotel looks like a shanty town with old bombed out buildings ,no pavemenbts and rubbish dumped everywhere, dont say you havent been warned.
