Vilamoura around the marina offered a vast array of bars and restaurants to suit every taste and pocket. It was clean and civilised with no evidence of loutish behaviour. (We left centre by 10pm each evening)
It is planned around the tourists and leaflet distributors were lurking at every corner!

The marina area - where all the shops/restaurants etc are was very clean, lots of places to eat we were there 7 nights and went to 7 diferant restaurants and never had a bad meal - though watch your change again.
The beach which is just past marina was very clean streches for over a mile.
You have to watch prices for drink though, check before you go in you can pay from 2 euro to over 5 euro for a pint depending where you go and what you drink, the local spirts and sangria were best buys.
There is a casino there but if you want to go there they have same dress code as here for the men - long trousers, shoes, shirt and tie.
If you are taking cigs(silk cut/embassy were 29 euros for 200, this was the price everywhere in town) or booze back home there are 2 shops down at the marina and 3 shops just up from the marina that are cheaper than supermarkets but shop around these shops because there was a differance in price of some of the bottles. Don't wait till the airport there prices were a lot more expensive!
We went to Albuferia for the day, local taxi was less than 15 euros each way! lot less hassle than bus/train.
One last thing about airport, make sure you have some water/juice with you in case you are delayed they charge 2.5 euros for a can of coke and 3 euros for a small bottle of water!

Had a great relaxing time in Vilamoura and enjoyed all the restaurants bars for a quiet time.
Would definately go back for another relaxing break and peace and quiet.

We had never been to the Alagarve before, we were not dissapointed with Vilamoura.
If you are looking for traditional portuguese style, then vilamoura is not the place for you, it is modern, but lovely.
The beaches, lovely, but the sea, phew it was freezing, even for me!!
Try to eat away from the marina, often cheaper and sometimes better, the back street squares are often the place to find the good restraunts.

Vilamoura is a top resort to stay in. The marina is great for walking around. Call in at the Mayflower Restaurant as it does great food and the prices are reasonable with excellent views of the marina. Many of the restaurants are child friendly with the usual chicken nuggets, fish fingers available.
Go to the market is Quarteira on a Wednesday. It is a lovely walk along the beach/promanade from Vilamoura (about 20/30 minutes lazy walking). Tip - the market is massive but the stalls are all similar and similar in price so either choose the bottom end of the market or top end. Everything is sunglasses, t-shirts, cardigans, bags etc. Husbands hold onto your wallets! Getting a car to see around the Algarve is a must. Roads are easy to drive on and there is hardly any traffic on the motorways. Go for a trip to Zoo Marine - well worth the day visit (at Albufeira). Try to get up to Monchique in the hills for some Piri Piri. Go to a restaurant nearly at the top of the hills (Goia) (spectacular views) it is up a windy road on the left and opposite is like a car park dug out of the hillside - just stoney underfoot. Stop here for some Piri Piri and enjoy the views from the balcony outside. The Algarve is easy to get around. The most time spent in the car is 2.5hrs to get to the furthest point. Pop into Praia de Luz (just past Lagos). Pretty little place and different in contrast to Vilamoura. As a veteran of the Algarve everytime we visit we still have to go back to Vilamoura. If you visit Albufeira go to Casa de Fonte who do a lovely Piri Piri if you cant get to the mountains. It is up a steep back street in the Old Town. Lovely courtyard with lemon trees. All in all Portugal is a lovely country.

Vilamoura in March is a fairly quiet place. Almost all of the shops, bars and restraunts are open.
Everything is spotlessly clean. There are so many restauraunts that you can eat at a different one every evening. and still be spoilt for choice by the end of the fortnight. Almost every style of cuisine is available including Portugese, Chinese, Thai, Indian and Italian. We had many superb meals, and a must is a visit to the Golden Ming, where Lucy and her staff will make your visit memorable with their personal attention.
After a great meal it is a pleasure to stroll back to the hotel looking at the yachts and, I must add, feeling completely safe as security is in evidence particularly around the edge of the marina.
This is not a noisy, brash holiday resort area,(at least not in March, I cannot speak for high season) it is more focused upon quality dining and classy shopping with many of the big designer names being well represented.
The beach area at the back of the Marinotel was lovely, and even in March was raked over every morning - although it was not really warm enough to do anything more than stroll along the waters edge.
It is this sort of attention to detail that makes Vilamoura such a pleasure to visit.

Vilamoura is really the Marina, and looks spectacular at night.Numerous bars and restaraunts to choose from, you would have to be unlucky to find a bad one. The usual 'kareoke'and large screen TV's etc are aplenty, with a number of bars away from the Marina with entertainment. Nearby beach is exellent with a clean and 'good value' beach cafe. As in most resorts on the Algarve, a hire-car is a must if you lke to 'sight-see'and find entertainment for youngsters away from Vilamoura itself.(Zoomarine,Waterpark, and Go-karting at Almancil etc).

There is plenty of activity to do and places to relax and unwind, coupled with the superb beaches and the marina which is clean and secure make it a must to visit

Purpose built area, but not too built up.
Several hotels, but lots of greenery (including golf courses).
Assorted restaurants and bars withing walking distance of hotel -Chinese, Indian, Thai, pizza, Italian, McDonalds, Mexican, Portuguese, snack bars.
30-40 minute walk to Quarteira - market every Wednesday - along the beach and through the daily fish market.
We had a car, so not sure of public transport, but heard taxis are cheap.
Easy access to Faro, Loule (Saturday market) and Albufeira not far.
Would be happy to return to this area.

Serious lack of entertainment except the casino and night club within.
Food in general on the marina is of a pretty poor standard. We found a tiny little place just off the marina under the Olympus hotel called Shakespeares which was superb - all home cooked food, English bacon and sausages for the breakfast (open at 8am so great for us golfers) through till 10pm (8pm in winter.) It is the only place we can seriously recommend in Vilamoura as we had fun with the staff and always great food, steaks, homemade pies, kievs, lasagne, mix grill etc.
The beach was a bit windy so didn't get much chance to sunbathe, so ended up with a golfers tan-elbows to hands, knees to socks!!!!
The golf is great in vilamoura - don't miss it, and don't miss a visit to Shakespeares because we will be back soon!!
