With one foot in the past and one in the present, Salou has an awful lot to offer tourists. The town dates back to the 13th century but on the historical front it is best known for the Santa Maria del Mar church built in the 18th century and several of its 19th century buildings, including the Harbour Master Building and the Carrilet Railway Station. Salou's most famous beaches include Capellans, Llenguadets, Llevant and Ponent. Nearby attractions include the PortAventura theme park, Aquopolis Water Park and the House of Illusion where magicians will amaze and confound you as you eat your dinner.

Request a room that is facing away from the pool area if you want quiet at night. The rooms facing out have great views and are also very quiet at night even though there is live entertainment going on.

They have water stations dotted around the hotel, which is a great idea. You buy a recyclable bottle for €4 and you can fill it as many times as you like! Saves on buying lots of plastic bottles from supermarkets etc. Eco Friendly ?

Pool view rooms are good, if you want to watch the entertainment from your room. The entertainment is over by 11pm so no problem with noise, unless you go to bed early. Calypso 1 is the block with the restaurant, bars, etc. so I thought it the best choice

The overall resort was clean although it does take you to be carefull when walking on the footpaths as they are very unstable, there are holes and bumps. I myself stubmbled a few times and 2 of the kids fell and cut their knee and hand.
The entertainment around the resort in my opinion wasn;t that great, Rafferty's bar dow the street is good for the Irish, however not many people visit it now which is a shame as it's a great wee place.
We went in next door to Sinatra's to eat early on in the first week and refused to go back again, as the food wasn't that great, the staff were rude and it's not really child friendly to be honest.
There is a Burger King about 10 minutes walk away which was handy, however we would recommend The Comedy Club directly across from the apartments. Prices are really good, you get decent food, the staff are brilliant and they are really good with the kids.
The 2 boys insisted on going there on a Wednesday and Saturday night as the had a man come in and have a Wii war competition which was for the adults aswell as the kids!
Aswell as the apartment entertainment we would recommend Christy's Irish bar which is about a 10 min walk down the road from the Comedy Club and apartments, where the kids were more than welcome and were allowed to stay till at least 12am if needed.
As I said above we only went to the main beach once, and we got the bus to that which was only about 5 mins and sounds lazy but it was much easier for us t do it that way. The other beach was just unmanageable with 2 buggies etc.
Shops were also great, but you do get put off looking in them when the shop keepers follow you around the shop or just annoy you. It's impossible to have a proper and peaceful look around.

Port Aventura is another must in my opinion, we had bought 14 day tickets online before going, and it was the best thing we done. We were able to go up a few mornings and afternoons and take our time and the kids were able to enjoy themselves more. My only complaint about it this year was that the park closed at 8pm instead of the usual 12am last year, so my friends wee ones didn't get to see the fireworks shows which was a bit of a low point. As far as I can gather tere has been no explanation for this closing early, so I would advise you to check what time they close at if you plan an evening there, I'm not sure if this will be happening all holiday season or not.

All in all we had a great holiday, apart from our last morning, the kids had a great time, us two adults had a great time and we are hoping to book again for next year.

This is a very touristy resort but I was pleasantly surprised to see that about 70% of the tourists were Spanish. The beach which is safe and sandy is a 5 minute stroll away. The waters edge does get really busy but this seemed to thin out around lunch time. Sun beds and brollies can be hired for the day but they weren't cheap bearing in mind the awful exchange rate (4 euros a bed and 6 euros a parasol)The chappy in charge of them does come round and sweep off the sand from the beds which is a nice touch. To the left of the hotel is the bulk of the shops. You can easily get lost though as all the shops seem to sell the same things, trashy souvenirs. To the right of the hotel along the prom is quite picturesque with beautiful blooms interspersed with fountains. If you follow the prom for about 10 minutes you will come to the marina where you can take a boat trip to other areas. By the marina is a huge fountain display which at 10 pm at night comes alive with coloured lights lasers and music.
The theme park is very near and worth visiting with tickets bought in advance before you travel as they are much cheaper that way. Next to the theme park is a water park which is superb for all ages. Both parks can be reached by bus at 1.35 euros each way or by the land train at 3 euros each way. The bus stops are very near the hotel and the tourist information centre is almost opposite. Not much to do in the evenings other than a drink in a bar. We were constantly hassled by people advising us to use their bars with their drinks promos. My advice would be to take the flyers, say thank you and quickly walk off. We tried saying no but they hassled you even more.
We enjoyed walking along the prom in the evening as it was quite lively with all ages.

Salou is very clean. London could learn a lot from it! Entertainment - good. Beach - you could eat your dinner from it! Also temp in Salou never went over 30 so just perfect! Never rained except at night. Last year we went to a Devon caravan park where it is guaranteed to rain 4 out of 5 days - so if you prefer this sort of weather I'm afraid Salou is not for you !!!!!!

resort itself is small so not a lot of choice. few bars and restaurants but mostly catered for british grub and not great quality unless you want to eat burger and chips,so if you wanted some tapas you would need to go into salou on the bus 2 euros or taxi 10 euros. beach was lovely but dear for drinks. overspent a bit due to hiring sunbeds and buying drinks at the beach then having to get buses and taxis into salou at night.the buses stop quite early too about 11pm. good food and atmosphere on salou beachfront at night although further away from beach is a bit run-down. lunatic restaurant was excellent as was the roast chicken place - but sometimes got busy and you had to queue to get in but was well worth it, best roast chicken i have ever tasted. not a pretty resort but more high rise and busy. unfortunately we wont return - not even for the chicken!!

I found the whole place fairly clean considered to the amount of people that stayed there. the entertainment was lively for most ages, families with young kids might have some problems, well there is arcades and water/theme parks to keep them happy. The beaches were alrite. Extremely busy, we searched around for other beaches and found a nice one around 10mins walk up the hill. As a lad on holiday with friends id definelty come back, but not for a relaxing holiday or would i like to come here with my parents for a family holiday

This is Cap Salou so do not think you are getting Salou. It is a very pleasent place to have a holiday and does go quiet after 12pm. Regular bus service to all parts of the area easy to use. A few bars and resturants near by. 3 beaches to go to. Would come back to this area.

A very clean cared for resort, La Pineda is a lot quieter than Salou (thank your chosen diety!) but has enough going on to keep everyone entertained. There are no shortage of bars, restaurants, shops and clubs (Pacha being the biggy for all you dance nuts) as well as regular beach and street entertainment and, of course, Aquapolis - the water park (we didn't go there in the end - ran out of time doing other stuff - so cannot comment). We did purchase a 7 day pass for Port Aventura (a lot cheaper if bought on the internet before you go away), and used it virtually every day. Because the park is open until midnight we found that we could be fairly flexible about when we went. We had a great time there and can highly recommend the shows and the fireworks at the end of the evening (the last bus back to La Pineda is 12.30 a.m. so there's no worries about getting back to your hotel). This last comment reminds me that I should congratulate the spanish on the quality of their public transport system. Don't waste your money on car hire, use the buses. They are clean, reliable, plentiful and cheap (2 Euros p.p. one way between Port Aventura and La Pineda and 2.60 Euros p.p. one way between Cambrils and La Pineda). We did visit Cambrils one evening and enjoyed eating good quality seafood in a very harbour town - Definitely on our list to explore more in the future.

What really makes La Pineda a great resort is its fantastic beach. It is a very clean and well-maintained golden sand beach which has more than enough room for everybody without getting claustrophobic. Just be aware that there is very little shade and the sunbeds are very pricy. We found, because we used the beach alot, it made more economic sense to buy a beach umbrella and two lilos from the local supermarket and give them away at the end of the holiday. The lilos were also great for body surfing when the waves got up!

Comment has been made about the price of drinks and food at the resort. Yes it is expensive to eat out and you can get stung for a fair few Euros for your drinks, but I would say not much different from the UK. We found buying water, soft drinks, wine and beer from the supermarket was far cheaper than drinking in bars and we had a balcony with a nice view to drink them on.

We really like Salou, it's lovely and clean, although quite 'British'. There are lovely places to visit from Salou, like Barcelona, Tarragona, Cambrils, La Pineda, Sitges, Montserrat, water parks and PortAventaura. The water park at La Pineda is very good, and Port Aventaura is very good too.
