Fig tree bay has nice beaches, but.... they get cram packed in the summer months and i mean packed. Loverly area.

Pernera beaches are scattered little sandy coves, equally nice and feels more personal.

Fig tree is about a 15/20 minute walk from the start of the coastal path. Take the coastal path or it will take (much) longer.

The beach in penera isnt as nice as fig tree in my opinion, im in Penera from 14th september 2011

The beach about 1 minute walk from the Tsokkos Garden in Pernera isn't as big as Fig Tree Bay but it not a bad little beach !

here it is back in April 2009 (just out of main season hence empty)

The Tsokkos Gardens (and Sun Garden) complex in Pernera (again remember this is April which was out of season and the hotel was actually closed at that time, that year - we went in the complex for a nosy about as our daughter was staying there later in the same year )

I didnt realise there was a beach just a minutes walk from the hotel i thought maybe it would be a little further.

The beach a minutes walk away looks a nice little beach so we will use that one for most of our beach time although we may go and spend an afternoon on fig tree beach just to say we have been!!

I take it there are eating places that are family friendly and serve good food and also traditional dishes nearby. If you could give me names of bars to try i would be really grateful.

Eating out in Pernera, all places are happy for families to go in, the more the better....

very near the beach, on the coastal path

Safiros (snack/cafe/bar) does great breakfasts and lunch time snack food


The Blue Spice Restaurant again very near to your hotel, does a varied selection of good meals from local dishes to steaks and breakfasts..(slightly expensive compared to some place but we haven't had a bad meal there -oh and free use of pool and lounger to paying customers)


One of our favourite place (run by Mike who is Cypriot but trained in Italy) is the Nautilus Trattoria Italiana - they do excellent Italian dishes at a decent price and good service (even the humble pizza is worth a go !)


back to Cypriot food and on the edge of the beach, the Polyxenia Isaak Restaurant has expanded a lot since we went in, but it was very good food and atmosphere when we went.


The Fresh House is another one that does some well cooked meals.. if you are a fan of fish they often have fresh Sea Bream and Bass


up on the top road between Pernera and Protaras is Super S, I've never been (the menu seems to have everything with chips which puts me off) but loads of people I know rave about it saying its one of the best places for homemade local dishes !


and while we are up that neck of the woods look out for Steens if you want some home cooked food... great steaks, pies, stews, the best home made burgers, great breakfasts etc and very friendly atmosphere..


as I've now gone off a tangent, another place I should mention is the Polyxenia bakery (not to far from your hotel). They do a great selection of baked goods, icecreams and such and if you ask him he might be able to get some "koupes" (pronounced coo bez) for you the next day (if he hasn't made any). A traditional Cypriot snack, a must try in my book... (I did several time once I'd found a source for them !)


there are lots of other places but I'll let you explore them yourself... don't take my (or anyone elses) word about anywhere.. go and look, see what you think.. don't go somewhere because I like it.. you might not like the same atmosphere as me, or might want to pay more (or less) to eat out etc etc...

however, you will find places you love... and be prepared to book again next years.. it happens to a good percentage of people who go !...

If you go on the beach most days also remember the sun beds and umbrellas are not free, i believe it was £7.50 euro last year. You can bring your own, your own towels, or floaty/lilo to lay on if you do not want to pay.

i believe it was £7.50 euro last year.

€2.50 per sunbed, €2.50 per brolly. So yes, 2x beds and 1x brolly would be €7.50 PS Brollys don't cost much more than €2.50 at Orphanides...throw it or pass it on when you're done
Meant to add. They were a couple of great posts Steve, but do you realise you are at our table at Safiros?

Steve- you have to give Super S a try - fantastic food and incredibly cheap too. Last time we didn't want a starter, but were given free pitta bread and dips. The main course was huge and very authentic (stifado and moussaka-albeit with chips - which tasted great by the way) and no dessert ordered, so we got a free huge plate of grapes from their vines. Followed by a complimentary liquor. I asked for zivania, which he seemed impressed by, so proceeded to bring me another one. He would have brought me more if we'd stayed longer. Total cost was 20.60 euros, which they rounded off to 20 euros. Gave them a 5 euro tip - and still felt embarrassed at paying so little for a fantastic meal.

Can't recommend the place highly enough, and as its a little out of the way I'm only too happy to give it some publicity. We'll be there again on 1st May and Super S will be out first and last meal of the holiday (with a few visits in between as well).

Finally, thanks for the pictures, great to see those places again. 9 weeks and 3 days to go!

firstly thankyou all for posting the great pictures (askcy) and information of the bars you have visited and recommend-i can assure you we will be trying them out during our stay.
After reading and looking at all the posts i just cannot wait to do on holiday with my hubby and children, from the pictures it looks a wonderful place. We just like a family,friendly resort with nice bars and resturants and a few shops to explore

made from the pulp residue of the wine making process the best Zivania is made by mixing local wine [Xynisteri or Mavro for example] then distilled....

the distillation is usually HIGH in alcohol, clear without any colour and sold in 35cl bottles [well that's how I have always found it]

personally i would say the better quality is similar to Polish white spirit [best Polish Vodka] but some say its more like Po-chine, either way its strong....

whilst there try one of my favourites [neat] Five Kings Brandy

Ahh, zivania - the women clean the windows with it and the men drink it... that's what they say anyway

Zivania also works well as a linament for bad backs or strains and sprains, stripping paint, lighter fuel, polishing marble worktops and other such niceties!

Yep, you can even drink it - but, DON'T knock it all back at once as the Cypriots will encourage you to do, unless you want to give them a good giggle. Watch the old boys who drink it and you will see they sip it

In summer, some of them prefer to drink it icy cold. It's certainly an aquired taste and it isn't something that you can put with a mixer. It has to be neat or not at all and it's fantastic way to warm up your insides in the winter months

I think i will defo be giving the Zivania a miss-the locals would be laughin for days if i had even a sniff of it!!!
