A summary of our first trip to Bitez this year...
We flew out from Manchester airport, on Easter Saturday with MyTravel - word of warning... they were really strict on the weight and werent allowing 2 suitcases as 1 weight (i.e. 1 suitcase 16 kilos, 1 suitcase 14 kilos...families were having to unpack to distrubute the weight evenly!) We boarded the plane in a snow blizzard, which seemed strange!
We had our sunday brunch on the beach on the first day in glorious sunshire at The Golden Spoon, which was the most amazing spread you've ever seen! As much as you wanted, including tea/coffee/juices for 15 YTL. Well recommended. It was packed out, we were the only English there.
Nextdoor to the Golden Spoon, Ali's restaurant, now known as 'CJ's Sofra' run by Charlie, Jonsil and Aydin. (Aydin from The Sultan). It was like a bombsite, the lads were working really hard and have ripped it apart, to improve it. They're in the process of building a bar and have changed the layout. We popped into see them most days. We wish them all the luck in the world because they deserve it. They will be opening in May and are going to stay open all year round. Give them a try
All the restaurants have a glass-like-conservatory built on the front, for the Winter months. And CJ's Sofra are going to build one on too. The First Stop are in the process of having them fitted as I type this...
Bitez is VERY popular with the Turkish people for days/evenings out/brunch during the Winter months.
We had lovely meals in The Sultan and New Seasons. Daniel the Hassler from New Seasons has left, and has gone to work at the Makumba Summer Gardens Hotel. And his father is going to run a Turkish restaurant behind the mosque.
Mustafa opened The Lavas the day before we left. Hes a thoroughly nice bloke, he gave us a lift to Turgetreis on Saturday and his prices are very reasonable. Hes going to open this Winter.
The rest of the week it rained and flooded in places especially near the Ambrosia Hotel. From the Harbour to the wooden bridge before the Golden Spoon everywhere was desserted.
Gumbet was like a ghost town. I was also told if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all. So I wont The Saray Zetas was lovely there. Had a nice meal.
A restaurant we highly recommend is 'Denizhan' on the main Konacik/Bodrum road.
When we exchanged our money at the bank in Bodrum, we got 2.55 lira to the pound. Word of warning... a large beer is 5 lira which is high considering its out of season. Lets hope they don't raise it too much during the summer months.
A big hello to Charlie and Jonsil because we showed them this forum.
It was lovely to see Bitez out of season, but cant wait till May comes... and the sunshine it out
Was there anyone at the Manuela?
Your Sunday lunch on the beach sounds fantastic, just a pity about the weather the rest of the week, but it would give you time to get things done at your villa. (I'm assuming that is why you went - rap me on the knuckles if I 'm wrong)
Will chat again later.
LOL Marn.
There were signs of life at the Manuela, on our last day - I believe Oktay had arrived. Another thing we learnt through the grapevine... Joshcun (who used to be head of Reception at the Manuela has left the Tumay Hotel and may be going back)
There looks to be alot of work to be done on the Manuela. The tree people sit underneath, on the cushions near the bar was crumbling. It all looks like it needs a lick of paint.
Im sure everything will be spick and span by May.
46 more sleeps...
Welcome back, thanks for your report - it made interesting reading. I now wish we were going back before September. Still, only 6 months to wait!
When we were there in May 2006 they still had things to do before the influx in June.
It doesn't bother me though. As long as I have my nice room, food to eat and the sun shining I couldn't care less what they have to do.
See you on Onur Air flight 16th May. Don't be late.
Hope they don't have the same restrictions on baggage. I thought it was only the cheap airlines, eg. Ryan Air, who had 'only one bag per passenger.'
Thanks again for the report,
Marn
That's good to hear about Charlie and John getting the place ready. It'll be difficult for them this summer, especially with the Golden Spoon beside them and the other restaurants a few paces along the prom, but get the quality right and the price right and they'll do weell enough. Normally we're out at end of March, I love the area when there's no tourists, I think the food is better at the Golden Spoon in the winter than the summer. My wife tells me it's just the same all year round.
5 YTL for a beer, they need to have change of heart about that one, otherwise it could be a quiet summer!
So Coskun is not taking the lease on the Tumay this year, I was talking to him last October, he said last year was tough, but I was sure he would give it another year.
Were you talking to Argie from the Manuela, he was on here a couple of weeks ago, but hasn't posted since.
Anyway, thanks for the update, it's good to hear that the place is shaping up for the season.
See you all in May we're out from 19th for 2 weeks. Probably see you at the Golden Spoon Sunday Lunch buffet!
We used to hop the dolmus down to the mosque, only 1 Lira - Lazy I know, but it saved us getting soaked! I think we'll be doing that in the summer, to be getting from A to B. You know how long it takes when they all stop and chat
The day before we came home, the Manuela reception doors were open as we passed, with a light on. My daughter thought she saw Oktay pass in a car, when we were standing by the Meis Apartments.
We havent seen Coscun, since we went to his wedding the year before last. It will be nice to see him again, if he decides to stay in Bitez.
As I said before, the lads are working really hard in CJ's. They are putting a snooker table in and a projector on the wall to show the sports. They're good at what they do - Im sure Oktay will miss them greatly.
It will be strange Ali and Kudret not being there, we always have our first meal with them. Last year they did a lovely birthday party for my sister. I took banners and Christmas crackers and her daughter was so excited collecting everything for her birthday at the end of the night. We must have looked silly sitting there with our Christmas cracker hats on, but who cares when you're having fun.
All is not lost, because Ali and Kudret have kept the apartments above so im sure we'll be seeing them over the Summer months.
On our last evening we decided to go to the Golden Spoon. On arrival, there was a huge conference going on all the tables pushed together, Microphone getting passed around, everyone giving speeches. There was only us and 2 other tables, not part of the party. We were really bored and didnt know whether till leave, but Engin insisted we stayed and we're glad we did. We ended up having THE BEST NIGHT we've ever had... They had live music on, a man with a guitar, who was fantastic. Singing in Turkish (and a bit of English for us) The whole place ended up singing and dancing and we felt proud to have experienced such a wonderful night with them. But like Cinderella we had to leave at midnight, to get ready to leave for our 1am departure.
Roll on May...
As you're a Bitez expert, could I ask you about the weather in July?
I know it's going to be very hot, but is there usually an off-shore breeze to make the temperature more bearable? I'm beginning to have 2nd thoughts about the trip as don't want to spend the whole 2 weeks in the shade.
Any thoughts appreciated!
Hi, the weather is very hot in July but there is usually a breeze, sometimes quite strong. I don't think you will have to spend all your time in the shade!
It can be very hot during July... sometimes well into the 50's!
But theres a constant breeze, hence why Bitez is the 2nd best bay for windsurfing in the world!
Aslong as you have AirCon, drink plenty of water and stay out the midday sun - you'll be fine (common sense really?!)
We're there in July aswell. Last July, the wind was that strong it blew our summer furniture over!
Took the bull by the horns today and paid the holiday balance so we're going.
We'll not know if we don't give it a go! Looking forward to seeing Bitez 'in the flesh' as I've read so much about it. Thanks again
Bitez is deffo going on the list of resorts to be explored for the future
Said they have had a couple of wet days but weather is better now.
They have been eating at C.J's most nights and said the food was lovely!!! Im over the moon for them, they deserve to do well, after working so hard for Oktay for so many years!
Won't be long before we are sampling it our-selves.
See you at the airport Marn and Mike... By the way do you know Mustafa (from Number 48??) Hes now working in Yahsi in a restaurant called Viras. Google it, it looks rather nice. We're going to give it a try.
Can any of the Bitez regulars recommend a Bitez restaurant for authentic turkish food? We have had the occasional one, but would like to try new menus this year. Mike had a good one last year at the Blue Moon, but would like to know of any others.
Try some of the ones on the far side of the village shops opposite the Eurocafe for Turkish food.
However, If you can get the Dolmus to Bodrum you could try the Kirkegegi on the highway beside the Shell station on the left hand side of the road on the way into Bodrum from Bitez. Very good authentic Turkish food.
I'm sure we'll see you next week, we're over in Bitez from 20th - 26th, and will surely call in and see CJ's.
any cuisine will do as long as the quality is good. Also any good Pizza places?
(BTW is it still the case that tummy upsets are a probability in Turkey??? )
And no, an upset stomach is no more likely here than anywhere else you eat different food, has hot sun and a different water supplier than you're used to.
Personally I'd take some loperamide out with me just in case you are affected.
Our flight is in the morning, and we're back on the 26th so will hope to see lots of you about Bitez during the next week or so.
There is a stall along the front which advertises Pide, but I have never seen anyone buying any.
Marn.
Marn, if the place with pide is down near the Bitez Han then give it a try - it is the one they serve at Poyraz and it is really good.
Will pass on yours and SIR's love to everyone. And will do our best to enjoy ourselves, even though I'm not up to scratch at the moment.
Talk when we get back,
LOL Marn and Mike.
