You should get on the Egypt forum and offer some advice over there!

It's now our No 1 fave destination since we came to live in Cyprus and we've had our experience of power cuts and no A/C due to overload on the systems. We arrived one year at the tail end of a heatwave - with temperatures a little under 51c. Hardly any of the A/C was working in the hotel for a couple of days but it still felt more pleasant inside than out :tongue

Cyprus used to have its fair share of power cuts during the humid months of July & August - but, touch wood, we've had none this year. Will wait to see if we get any bad storms in the winter - that usually chucks the power off for a short time...

Hope you come back to Cyprus and give us another try sometime. But, at least you know what sort of questions to be asking if you decide to rent another villa ;)

Have fun!

Hi Julie

It doesn't seem to me that you were really asking for compensation as such, more a kind of re-imbursement of expenses that you didn't really expect to incurr.

It seems to me that the owner was less than honest by saying 'oh I thought I told you about this' (that implies they know full well they didnt tell you and thought they would lose the booking if they did).

If you paid a good a good amount of money for your villa, I feel that an honest approach by the owner is the least you can expect, then you can make an informed decision as to if you wish to proceed with the booking.

You could also have perhaps decided to stay with Cyprus, but go for a hotel as they seem to have more of an ability to manage this problem & you were unlikely to be without water for 5 days, even if timings of water supply were limited.

Hope you stick around, but unfortuantely the word compensation is like a red rag to bull to many on this forum, and I guess you will have been put off.

It would be better if people refered to it as a reimbursement of expenses that they were totally unaware they would have to meet when booking the villa. Sort of thing that gives villa owners a bad name really.

Just thought I would share this with you...

Kouris Dam (the one you can see on your left as you head up the main Troodos road) has a capacity of 115m cubic metres.

This is how it looked this evening!

perhaps rather than going for personal compensation you could try to get the owner of the property to make a donation towards the costs incurred by the locals for flying it in from greece. Even a couple of hundred pounds would be a nice gesture & be giving something back towards the locals.

Apologies for bringing this back but having just returned from Cyprus this am, and seen at first hand the problems the lack of rain is causing, being unable to take long showers is the least of the problems the people of Cyprus face. Farmers having to kill off livestock in some cases. Locals having water rationing imposed simply to ensure that holidaymakers can have their water.

We actually drove round the Kouris Dam last Thursday and it has even less water in it now. Other dams are just the same. I would suggest those who are installing extra tanks could be considered selfish. OK for everyone else to be without just as long as it is not them.

To be honest when we left for the UK in August we just prayed that Cyprus would see some rain as the situation was bad then.

We also wondered if they should stop building / selling so many homes with pools -------------------------------

Re people moaning about the lack of water .... the least said

Not content with having given the original poster a hard time in the first place. This thread has been dug up again to further rub salt in the wound.

I think that whilst we all feel for the people of Cyprus this is an unfair comment against the original poster, went through the mill from a lot of regulars in the first place.

I'm sure they now wish they had chosen Spain, Greece, Egypt etc or possibly even just stayed in a hotel in Cyprus as hotels seemed at that time anyway to be able to supply guests with limited amounts of water for showering.

The villa owner mislead the OP.

Not everybody spends 24/7 glued to the internet and holiday boards.

No wonder posters who come to us in good faith don't come back.

I think this topic has run its course now and I am going to lock it before it becomes a slanging match and gets out of hand.
