Just when I thourght I knew all about going via Mumbai, at the weekend my 4th trip in just over a year had some surprises.
There were six of us travelling BA Heathrow- Mumbai then Jet Mumbai - Dabolim. Outward was as expected from previous trips, again it took quite some time to transfer between terminals at Mumbai.
Two of our party had to be back home two days earlier than the rest, so they were booked to come back on thursday. Before leaving us they checked in on-line for the BA segment to get prefered seats. They, like the rest of us, had separate e-tickets for the two flights, so I was interested to hear how they got on. At Dabolim they were allowed to check their baggage through, but in Mumbai they were required to identify their baggage at the BA check-in, which they described as quite a performance. The Jet Airways website does say that this should happen, but says it is done at the Domestic Terminal, and on three previous trips this had never happened to me.
The remaining four of us set off home on saturday. As the other two had no problems checking through I was quite confident. We checked in online with BA just like the others had done and managed to move all four of us to get seats together. But at Dabolim the Jet Airways check-in refused to through check the baggage saying that because we had checked in online it could not be done. I asked why two people doing the same two days earlier had been able to do it and we couldn't. He just repeated that it is not possible. This gave us a problem, we were counting on through checked baggage in order to take a day trip into Mumbai and had booked an earlier flight out of Dabolim to allow time for this. We asked at both Dabolim and Mumbai Domestic if there was a left luggage facility in Mumbai but got no straight answers. So we took the bus to the International Terminal resigned to sitting there with our bags for 10 hours. At the International I went off to see if I could find a left luggage place. Nothing found at the Departures level so I found some stairs to the Arrivals and found a Left Luggage office in a separate building in the car park/taxi rank outside across from the door from Arrivals. Luckily it was open 24hours, so we then set off for a slightly shorter than planned train trip to the City.
A friend travelling outward a week later was booked Virgin then Jet, but the Virgin flight was late and she missed the last plane of the day out of Mumbai. She had to stay overnight and was only wait-listed for the 06:30 flight which ended up being full. She eventually got the 12:00 flight out.
The lessons the tales are...
No matter how well you may understand the procedures they do seem to change, even day to day.
Travelling outward on the Virgin flight involves a tight connection in Mumbai and any delay will miss the connection.

.... also we did the virgin from Heathrow with a small delay landing, and would have and very nearly did miss the (very tight) connection, in fact when we got to check in at Mumbai International (just in time for check in) were told by the girl at the computer.. 'no seats for you' :yikes, we argued to no avail waving our tickets at her and pointing at the clock ..and were being told 'just go you will miss the plane if you stay here arguing'..they had obviously let our seats go, we were also told that we couldnt get the bus had to get a taxi and 'you have to see them at domestic airport' !!! apparently because they couldnt check our bags through!!! basically they were just passing the buck and getting rid of us, anyway got a taxi, which has to go all round the houses, hot, flustered (and i had flu!) and going at lightening speed to get there before take off... ... (not a first for that either!!)unfortunately they also told us at domestic departures 'no seats', fortunately the plane was delayed for 3 hours (i think it was) and we eventually got some seats (sat apart) at the last minute after the girl trawling the computer for ages looking for some.....so i will never again take the virgin flight with that 2 hour connection to Goa but the alternative was zilch as that was the last flight of the day and all others were booked when we made the original booking online.... I hadnt checked in online (website kept refusing to allow me to do it online at Heathrow)and hadnt checked our luggage through .... stupid of us...but probably wouldnt have made a jot of difference as you say

Can anyone tell me what Jetair charge for excess bagage flying from Mubai to Goa return, on E Tickets just spoke to someone in the london office and was told its about £1.60 per kg, does not sound right to me have been given 30kg by carrier to mumbai and 25kg by jetair but was told that that is just hold luggage and would have another 5kg on top of that for hand luggage, i thought it was 25kg for both, now have not got a clue. Any help would be great many thanks in advance.
We're thinking of going to Goa, via Mumbai
Can I ask some ??'s re: best way to get to Goa?

I've finally managed to book my internal flights with kingfisher. I booked online on Saturday and got the usual cc problems. The booking came through as having been made but I needed to call them within the hour to verify my cc or my booking might be cancelled. First of all I phoned my cc company and made sure that the transaction wasn't going to blocked. Then I phoned the first number KF gave me- unobtainable. Second one- unobtainable. The free phone UK number rang and rang and then disconnected. Tried emailing them- nothing. So there was me left not knowing if I actually had a booking or not. I'd already tried Jet airlines and was shocked to see that most flights were already booked up apart from the extortianate ones. And a few days ago the flights weren't even in the system.
I tried the numbers again today. Tried the UK one over and over again and then a miracle happened. It rang and I got connected. But no- its not as easy as that. I had to wait for half an hour with this woman repeatedly telling me how important I was to them and I swear her voice gets higher as she comes to the end of her message as if she is trying hard not to laugh. Finally a real human being butts in to show just how important I was- Ring back in half an hour I was told. I explained that I had already been trying for 2 days so I didn't want to phone back. I needed someone to sort my booking. It was impossible just now apparently. I hung up and kicked a few walls.
Half an hour later I phoned and had to listen to the hysterical female for another 30 mins. Then someone answered and did take all my details. I seemed to have to give out all my information and then she said she would check.( this took a while as I had no idea what she was saying half the time and she couldn't understand me either) When she came back she obviously had had some form of mental blackout as I had to go through all the information again. When I got the confirmation and hung up eventually I was a mental wreck. If the OH changes his mind and wants an extra day in Mumbai he will be doing the phoning
The excess charges are practically nothing,we flew Jet air, and had over 20 kilos excess luggage between us, we were charged 900 rps, which is about 12 pounds, flying with kingfisher, they didnt bat an eyelid, they just put our luggage on the conveyor belt and gave us the boarding cards, they didn't charge, going or coming back from Goa/Mumbai,
Fiona, I hope that Kingfisher do start the route from London to Mumbai soon, just think how much easier it will be. We have always done the internal booking with American express, which is also our Lloyds credit card, they seem to accept them automatically.
it was amex they had problems with tomitma.
They don't half change the rules, last year they wouldn't accept mastercard, and I had to try three other cards before they would accept the amex. One day they will write a book of rules and give a copy to every one, so at least they will all know what they are all doing!!!!!
well- they can't make it easy for us- it is Goa we are talking about
Tomitma thankyou very much for that info, when i phoned jetair they said 88rps per kl, but i thought that did not sound right as we were having problems with each others accents. So no problem i can shop till i drop.
For Info. Kingfisher have a 25 kg weight allowance.
I'm about to book Mumbai-Goa- Mumbai for Nov-Dec Jet lite is quite a bit cheaper but at the back of my mind I seem to remember someone getting bumped off one of their flights We,ve got a 4 hr. transit in Mumbai onto an Emerates flight at 7.00pm on the return journey, and as the next one is at 4.00am the next day, we dont fancy spending about 8hrs at the check in area at Mumbai, as happened to friends a few months ago. Basically what I'd like to know is, how reliable and how punctual Jetlite are, compared to their parent company. Anybody have any views on this ? Alan
8 hour wait at Mumbai??
Mind you can't be worse than a 12 hour wait on a Monarch flight then told stay overnight for another 12.
Still reliability is an issue.
If the 7.00pm flight was cancelled guess I'd have to get a taxi to Mumbai!!!! I know someone who did this.... can't remember how much

Thats why I prefer (or should i say would rather) pay a little extra to fly all 4 flights with the same airline, any delays and it is there responsibility for the connections.
I also worked out the extra cost of hotels in Mumbai, taxi's etc and am going to squeeze an extra night in Goa at the expense of a more costly flight but have excellent connections at Mumbai both ways, so It depends what you prefer price or time waiting,
So far, JetLite have proved no more reliable than they were when they were Sahara earlier. They cancel quite a few flights, and re-schedule a lot more. If i was you i woldn't risk it. I would pay the extra for Jet Airways. Of the "low-cost" airlines Spice Jet are the most reliable (and Indigo, but they don't fly Goa/Mumbai).
Thanks Phil, I think I'll settle with Jet, we've booked the 8.00pm flight with Emirates to Dubai for a couple of days, and I dont want to miss it Alan
Does dabolim have a private lounge to use on the return journey ?
If any one has any knowledge or advice i would appreciate hearing from them.

I'm panicking now about Jet-Lite.
