Reply
ncie isnt it smee :D... better that the local brew!!

take it you mean you bought that at the airport on the way back from hols?!..

Sorry gaffer, yes I did buy it at the airport. Just read my own post and realised I didn't mention it was bought at the airport and not in a supermarket.
charliegirl, Morgans Spiced can be found in most bars and supermarket.
Prices for spirits at the airport are much the same as the shops on the island. Depends on what you want to buy though. Sometimes you can get a good deal or special offer in some of the shops.

Prices just about the same everywhere on the island.Prices at Kardemena begining of Sept,25 euros for 200 L&B,24 if you buy 1000.Local spirits buy 3 bottles for 10 GBP, branded spirits 3 bottles for 20 GBP.But you cant buy 3 the same as I heard one shopkeeper telling a customer.Just a tip for those of you who have aquired a taste for wine like myself and the wife, have a look out for Makedonicos a lovely white.
For those having a day trip, duty free prices for L&B in Turkey 15 euros for 200, but your only allowed 600 each.

hi there, have been to kos 2 yrs running & stayed in kardamena where everything is close at hand -all the hotels & apartments are close at hand to the bars & shops plus there is a local bus that runs regularly to kos town which is very cheap. i definetly go back as the local are really friendly.restaurants are very reasonable and food is good especially if you have the greek dishes. hope you will find this helpful and have a good time. Hi, I went to Kos last September and it was excellent we stayed in Kefalos in apartments called Kontessa they are through Unijet I think. Its a very nice area very close to all the pubs and restaurants and has a great pool and the beach is only a 5 minute walk away. Sounds like your quite young so if you prefer it a bit more lively you should stay in Kardamena its has alot more bars & clubs. We wished we did hire a car as we didnt find the roads very busy and the Greeks didnt seem to be as mad on the roads as other Greek Islands we have been too so would recommend a car you wont get lost the island isnt that big!

hi Gaffer,

Went to Kardamena last September. Had great time. Stayed self catering at the elga aparthotel (Aspro). Nice size pool, tasty snack bar and really close to all the music and karaoke bars. The occassional night could become noisy around 3.am as one of the nightclubs (quite small) was just up the road from the hotel. The nightclub itself wasn't a problem but if your room was facing the road you could hear the occasional arguement etc. as people were making their way back. It didn't really bother us (and we were a group of 11, ranging from a 1 year old to my parents in their early sisties). Plenty of eateries in Kardamena, including a Mcdonalds next to the beach ( if you're that way inclined)

Just back from Psalidi outside Kos town. I have posted my hotel and resort reviews in the appropriate sections.

Would someone be able to tell me if there are many nightclubs in Kos Town and the name of them and if there is an admission fee?? Or are there any really lively pubs??

See i'm thinking of booking a holiday to stay in the Lambi area of Kos Town for the peace and quiet of the day. I was wondering even are there any nightclubs in this area?? I remember when i was there years ago there was a big nightclub that had foam parties most nights it was on the road down to Lambi town but i cant remember the name of it.

Bar street is full of what I would call lively bars ( Bar more than pub ) not night clubs. They are all quite small and no admission fee ( quite the opposite the PR's try to tempt you in particualrly if you are feamle and good looking ). The area is quite fun as you can move in and out of the different bars until you find the most lively./suitable one for you.

Cant advise if there are any large nightclubs away from Kos town, didnt see any last year but with a wife and young children now wasnt looking for it so they could be there.

Kind Regards
Stewart

Hi Greece fans!

I have never been to Greece before and to be honest I don't even know if it will suit my personal circumstances, so I guess that's why I'm posting here! Many questions running through my head, so forgive me if I sound naive on Greece!

Firstly family (wife +4 year-old, + baby) usually frequent the Canary Islands, I guess as it usually doesn't get too hot there most of the time. Anyhow, my wife is getting tired of the same type of holiday (usually self catering apartment) and is looking for something different. We were thinking of boating it to France with the car and trying a DIY holiday. However I think all that travel might be a little too much considering the age of the kids, plus I'd be left to do all the driving!

Anyhow I just happened to be looking through a deluxe style holiday brochure (we can all dream!) and came across a hotel in Kos which really took my interest - The Neptune Hotel Resort - http://www.lux-hotels.com/gr/neptune/. I was really taken aback by the actual quality of this accommodation. We have never stayed at a luxury place before, but have often ventured into such 5-star places for a look around and a 'wish we were staying here' thought ;)
Now I'm left scratching my head over several questions. Firstly what about Kos itself, like for a young family? Is it safe, clean etc? What about the aspect of bringing a baby, would Kos be suitable? We'd be going end of July into August - would it be very hot then? (I suppose the complex has air-con)

Next onto the hotel complex itself. I've read some online reviews and it sounds good, but I'm wondering has anyone ever stayed here before? What was it like? Is it truly deluxe and luxurious? What about the beach at the hotel - is it safe, sandy, suitable for young children, picturesque etc? What is the location like? Is there much else to do outside of the complex itself? Or would car hire be necessary (not on my wish list due to the children + need of child seats etc)?

Such a hotel would be an expensive outlay for us, but I'm trying to convince myself that it would be worth it. ;) We'd be going for a week, and if we are going to spend so much for one week, then I'd like to ensure its going to be worth every penny - a holiday worth remembering and one we won't regret (been a tough year and I feel that we all need something special).

I'm sure there are many other questions I could ask. Any advice and recommendations most welcome - thanks all! :)

Carnt tell yer nothing of the hotel but Kos is a lovely island.

My wife and I, contemplated going back there this year but we plumped for Thassos :D we travelled all over the island, couldnt fault it, had a great time. Will be very hot and very windy in places, we hired a scooter, never got blown off once.

Go for it

Personally end of June/August = hottest time and on Kos in my experience thats a really hot time to go, if i was taking my 6 year old we wouldnt get to see many sights as walking around in that heat would be a no-no for us. The hotel itself looks amazing, its not too far from Mastichari which is not a bad place on Kos but not the best either, has a bit of a smelly port there but obviously its your choice. Kos town is nice for a day out shopping but i wouldnt stay there as its so busy, Kos itself on the whole is a lovely island, loads of nice boating trips to be had visiting various islands. I would reccomend Kos becuase I like it but not sure for yourself.

If you hire a car with air-con then you will be able to get to some nice beaches no problem, and if its what your after im usre a hotel as big as that would have lots of entertainment,.

SOrry i cant be of more help, if you want to know anything else about Kos just ask theres a lot of us that have been there, can I just sya one more thing.....
everytime ive been to Kos we have had evening/overnight flights, not too bad on the way there but coming home was terrible, check out in afternoon pick up early hours of morning, queing up outside Kos airport with whole plane loads of people ibn seperate ques, getting home at 7am, basically would not reccommend those kind of flights with kids, but maybe you can get better flights

We were in Kos at the end of September last year. Though one of the more commercial of the Greek islands (we generally visit the quieter resorts), it still has a lot to offer, lovely beaches, mountain villages and ancient ruins and Kos town is well worth a visit.

We tend to go for cheap self catering in Greece and enjoy the local tavernas. I don't know this accomodation but from the description of "near Mastahari", I have an idea of roughly where it is and don't think it is particularly near any of the villages. We actually liked Mastahari itself, a small resort with a nice sandy beach and typically Greek tavernas. The harbour wasn't smelly when we were there and you can get boat trips to Kalymnos. There are busses, taxis and coach trips and many people hire bikes but to get the most of the island, a car would be much better. Driving in Kos was not a problem and would enable you to find some of the quieter beaches and see the sights.

It will be hot - could be up to 35 to 40 C at that time of year. If this is too much for you, Id leave Greece for late May/June or September/October when it's more bearable. I also echo the last poster's comments about the night flights - we had a 3.30am flight and ended up queueing outside the airport for about an hour and a half to get though security.

Greece is generally perfectly safe and very child friendly - just avoid the "party" resorts, in Kos this is mainly Kardamena.

Hi! You've been given some good advice. Kos is VERY HOT at that time of year. Certainly May, June or Sept are the better times to go, altho' Sept can be very hot, too. The airport is abysmal, so be prepared for that! I wouldnt take young children there at the time you're thinking of, if I was in your place. Kos is a nice enough island...but Corfu is much better. But the Greeks are very friendly people and really love kids! Your choice and good luck! 8)

Yes! Dora's right, Corfu is another we would go back to, so much to see especially the "Land That Time Forgot" Paleokastritsa, stunning.
