Just one thing and I asked this before and i dont think it was understood. I asked if you could use euro in Tunisia. I wasn't talking about exchanging I was talking about using it as a currency. Is converting to the Dinar absolutely nessicary?
As in Egypt they will accept any currency in shops and resteraunts (In Cairo anyway) This was told to me by an Egyptian tour guide . In Egypt I paid for things through cypriot pounds and Euro and I heard British people only using sterling and never changing to Egyptian pound. In Israel and some other countries they happily accept US dollar as currency.
The Euro is second biggest currency in the world after the dollar and so many French visit Tunisia.
How would a Tunisian react if I tipped them with Euro on my first night there ? In Egypt they were so happy with it ! did anyone try doing this?
would be grateful for replies
When you first arrive they will accept any currency as a tip if you don't have dinars. Some of the shops in the Medina in Tunis also accept euros though I'm not sure about other areas. You will certainly need dinars for most things however, in particular all forms of transport, whether trains, buses or taxis, and food and drink in the cafes and restaurants. Unlike us, the locals have difficulty changing euros and sterling into dinars, which is why you will often be approached by people from your hotel with a handful of pound coins or euros they have been given in tips asking if you can change it for them.
Only 1 week and 1 days to go!
Thank you so much for all your help. I will take my cash cards with me and just get money out when i need to. I might take some travellers cheques, just to be on the safe side!!
I really cant wait to go!!!
suprising comment as both my bank (TSB) and building society (Abbey) offer sterling travellers cheques at no charge. Check with your bank.
Coupled with the added security of replacement if lost or stolen, I'm amazed some here are questioning TC's
Cash may speak louder than cheques but if lost or stolen you're up the swanny without a paddle.
I usually do take travellers cheques with me. I'll ask my bank if they have no charge on travellers cheques!! xx
If they dont, open a "fly account" @ TSB for next time
Thanks Wooltonian, thats a great help!!
Hi Sunnyessex! When my daughter and I arrived for the first time in Tunisia last year many asked for tips in pound sterling. One little tip - if someone offers to push your trolley at the airport he'll ask you for ("one pound please". I will definitely take travellers cheques for safety reasons. AS the Dinar is a closed currency the exchane rate is the same everywhere.
Thanks Helen T.
Planning on taking Stirling cash.
But if I run out of cash (£400 for me and daughter for 2 wks half board)does anyone know if Visa Electron will be accepted in the Atm's over there?
Is it best to take Stirling or US Dollar Traveller checks or are the ATMs reliable??
Going to El Hana palace
Just seen a previous post which answers all my questions.

hello is anyone able to reccomend what currency i should take as i have been told to take euro's sterling or us dollars but im not sure which one is best
take sterlinf there is no comission charges, if you take euro,s or dollors and bring back you will loose out big time
can you take as much money as you like is it very cheap wheres the best place to change your money
You can change money at the airport.hotel or banks. The exchange rate is the same everywhere as it's controlled by the government.
When I went out in April I had some euros left over from a trip to France the previous month, so I changed those into dinars first to get rid of them.
We're off to PEK next Wednesday (Marhaba Palace hotel). Rather than take Travellers Cheques or cash, we were hoping to use our ATM card to withdraw dinars. Are there many machines about?
Thanks!
