You can only use dinars in Tunisia and you can change sterling or euros in several places. I suggest you read the information in my previous post above, where you will see a link to a currency exchange sheet which you can print off.

Hello...im off to the abou sofianne hotel in PEK next week,really looking forward to it now as have read some real good reviews,and have had some real good advise from you folks here too..thanks..
But reading through my tickets it seems to be telling me i can not use my solo debit card in tunisia its solo/meastro.
Just wondered if anyone else can tell me if this is correct dont want to get stuck with no money...

I'm sure someone can help you but I've only used Mastercard credit and Visa credit and debit cards so haven't actually noticed what others are accepted.

Is it better to take a mixture? e.g English 10 and 20 notes and sterling traveller's cheques?
Is there any Exchange places in or near the Bel air hotel?

Need a little advice i have read previouse post some are a bit old, i just like to know what is best to take Sterling or Euros , we have been before but over ten years ago when we took travellers cheques we are going to sousse.

Hi pintsize, me and my family where in pek in July this year only stayed for 1 week and after asking other members on the forum we took cash (sterling) and changed it as we need it, and used my switch in the Hotel cash machine on the last day, we are going back for 2 weeks in July 2008 and planning on taking cash (sterling) again. Haddy.

Sousse is awash with ATMs if you want to use your credit or debit cards. You will also be able to change travellers cheques or cash, either sterling or euros, at the hotel and in most of the banks during opening hours. I've never bothered with travellers cheques but many people feel happier using them so it is a matter of personal choice.

Just a quick note to let you know that Dinars are available in the UK.I bought mine in the summer from my local Thomas Cook store and although they don't advertise the fact that they sell them, they will if you ask.This will help if you need a "couple of bob" to tide you over.I also brought mine back out of the country (which you aren't supposed to do) as I'm going back next week.

Thanks for that David. I didn't know you could do this through Thomas Cook, but the TTT Bureaux de Change at some airports (certainly Stansted) will let you have dinars and I have occasionally picked some up there. I was actually asked what sort of dinars I wanted and if I knew the regulations. Obviously I said I did and was then just asked how much I wanted. I usually bring dinars back with me as I go out at least twice a year and like to have some for the train or taxi when I arrive, as well as small change for tips etc. Knowing the official rules on this I do not offer any advice on whether it is legitimate, but I have never had any problems in the past and don't anticipate any in the future. A Tunisian friend once told me that it is only large amounts which can cause problems and the most I've ever brought back was about 100 dinars. I have a purse at home with dinars, euros and Danish kroner.

Just got back from a holiday in PEK Tunisia. The rate of exchange is set by the government and so it is the same where ever you change your money. Whilst we found it convenient to change our money at our hotel, you should be aware that the hotels will not change Tunisian dinars back to sterling!

We were left with quite a bit on our hands and as you cannot take it out of the country the only place we could change it was the banks at the airport and they charge a whopping 30% commission - yes that's right 30%!!

So if you don't want to be be like us and make quite a loss changing your money back to sterling, the advice is to change your money little and often and do be aware that the hotels will not change dinars back to sterling and you could make a substantial loss changing it back at the banks at the airport.

No way I pay a third back to change tunisian money back to English!!.Every time I bring money out of the country for my next visit,not supposed to!!!.But when we was there last November they opened my purse,I could have Died!! they looked at my Dinars and said I could not use them in the duty free!,I just said can In use euros or sterling and they said Yes!,so I just closed my purse and walked off,so Ive got Dinars for my next visit

Well you may want to take a chance and hang to your unspent dinars for your next visit. But as there is no way I am ever going back to Tunisia (one visit was enough) I had no option but to change mine back to sterling and take the loss and besides I did not fancy rounding off what was a very poor holiday with a stay in a Tunisian prison!

Coming back through Monastir airport yesterday I bought a coffee in the cafe in the Departure area and actually paid in dinars I also changed 20 dinars into sterling for a lady who was just about to go to the bureau de change and would certainly not have got full value. As I always carry the Oanda Cheat Sheet with me she could see I was giving her the proper rate and I was left with a few more dinars for my next trip to Tunisia.

we're going to tunisia for the first time 13th July..would you recommend taking some euro's for the duty free at the airport?

I was thinking of taking around £200 for myself and partner for the week as we are staying all inclusive, should this be enough?

You could take Euro's with you, has the duty free prices in euro's.
But we found Enfidha airport very dear, also U/K duty free dear.
We found the best deals on the much cheaper.
You can check your flight magazine on your pc,then you judge the prices
If you decide to buy on get it going out of U/K,because they may not have it going home. ( They don't restock in foreign countries ) So if they sell out going from U/K, they will not have any going home.
