just looking for an annual policy as our renewal date is 15/09/08. Have been looking at the Post Office policy which seems quite good and offers Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance. Also Easyjets annual policy offers it , we are flying with them in 2 weeks and they are slightly cheaper. Not sure whether just to book a cheaper policy and make sure I use the credit card for future bookings, or go for one of these with the SAFI cover.

Thanks Luci,

Can someone help me regarding airline failure insurance. A friend who like me booked through First Choice online for flight only but it has a Thomson flight code. She has been informed that she does not need airline failure insurance as the flight is a charter flight!

Now I am totally confused. I thought the airline failure insurance applies to all airlines, all trips. :que

I have range up a few insurance companies who say check with the airline!

Hello there

Please forgive a new girl if I am in the wrong place but I would appreciate advice on back packer insurance. My son is off to asia for an open ended trip and I am arranging/paying for the insurance. I have found it totally confusing. He may be away for up to 4 years so I assume an annual policy which I could renew every 12 months would be the right one. There seems to be such a price difference, I suppose its a case of get what you pay for. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

there is info in the flights forum about flying after acidents, the first thing you need to get is a fit to fly letter from her doctor if you wish to go ,then inform the airline [they may alocate a decent seat for her] and advise the insures ..you will have an option of forking out a fortune for extra cover or not having cover in her broken limbs...

Thankyou wizard... if i dont take out the extra insurance but do get a letter from the hospital, could they stop her from flying?
Reply
not normaly it depends on how many dissabled passengers already on the flight hence advising them

Can anyone recommend an insurance company that will insure someone who has just had a pacemaker fitted?
Our friend who was insured with Age Concern, had a pacemaker fitted 3 weeks ago and when he informed Age Concern they said they wouldnt no longer insure him.He has no other health problems and is in his 70s.

Hi all,
I recently had two TIAs (mini strokes) within ten days. The attacks did not leave me with any disability but I am now taking aspirin and blood thinners. I have free holiday insurance through my bank (HSBC) but I have not yet told them about the attacks as I am not thinking of going away (Tenerife) until December and I am due to see a stroke specialist in October following a brain scan.
Has anyone else had a similar experience and how did it affect their holiday insurance? Many thanks.

Frankie,You MUST inform your insurance company.I had a TIA in 2001 and was insured through the Alliance and Leicester.I didnt go on holiday until the next year and when I told them I had the TIA they wouldnt insure me.The underwriters were Sun Alliance ,so I just got cover from AXA.Some companies will insure you and others wont as the following year A&L started having Fortis as their underwriter and they insured me with a £30 excess.
If any problems arose while you were on holiday connected to the TIAs your insurance would be void!.I would ring the medical helpline of your insurance and explain your situation.

Thank you Jaytrip.
I have told HSBC insurance and they won't cover me for anything connected to the TIA. They won't extend the policy for an extra payment.
The Stroke Association (thought they might be a bit sympathetic) wanted £160 for A WEEK's cover (going to Tenerife in December. Insureandgo wouldn't touch it.
But better news - Direct Travel have offered me a week's cover for £38.10 and an annual policy for £136.50. My wife (no health problems and insured through her bank, the Co-op) and I go away three or four times a year so I think I will take up the annual policy. I'm going to see my account manager at HSBC (at her request) about my savings and I might well express my discontent at their "free" insurance.
Marvellous how different insurance companies react to health problems!

I felt like banging my head against a brick wall when I was trying to sort out insurance after my TIA.
Although Alliance and Leicester wouldnt insure me,even when Fortis became their underwriter,I could get insurance at a cost with Unison.Their underwriter was Fortis also..I think the "free insurance" from banks are for the minimum cover and even now Lloyds who we also bank with wont insure me at any cost.
TIAs,strokes and heart attacks are the hardest to get insurance for but theres no way I would go away without insurance.

Hi Jay Trip,

The guy from Direct Travel was very helpful indeed and I would recommend them to anyone looking for insurance after a TIA. You say you had your TIA in 2001 - have you had any problems since? Hope you are okay now. I got a bit of a shock when I lost my power of speech for 5/10 minutes but I've been okay since. Had a cat scan last week and am waiting to see the specialist again later in October.

Fortis are good for pre-existing medical conditions - our annual insurance with them is about £100 (worldwide cover) - I have ongoing back problems. They are only available through insurance brokers, which adds an extra £20 to the premium. Our brokers have turned out to be worth more than that £20 as I had some problems with the Fortis medical screening line last month and they complained on my behalf. Finally got my new condition (tenosynovitis) covered for no extra cost.

Corinne,My free insurance with Alliance and Leicester is underwritten by Fortis.I pay £30 excess for Europe and Worldwide would be £50 excess. You can phone them direct as when the A & L wouldnt insure me when I had my TIA I phoned them direct and they offered to insure me,at a cost!.
Any pre existing conditions concerning heart problems or strokes are much harder to insure. The insurance companies are getting very strict now and one of our friends who had a heart attack 18 years ago has now being told by his bank(Lloyds TSB) that they no longer will insure him!
