Well I think it is totally unacceptable and shows the lack of respect to their clients.

If you send an SDE for the return of your passport then its going to come back by Royal Mail, but if you pay online for its return then VSF are now using DX Courier Services, cost a bit more but it works got ours back today, its explained here http://in.vfsglobal.co.uk/postal-app.aspx this is the relevent paragraph

Franny, my updates have been exactly the same on the same dates as yours so now I'm hoping they arrive today too!

Ours arrived 5 minutes ago via DX courier - hurrah! Roll on 10th December.
Ive got fingers and toes crossed for Franny! To be honest the online application for me was easier than postal two years ago.

So what's the status with your application?
Did VFS say why they wanted you to contact them?
What was the 'further information' that they needed from you?
Our application went very smoothly, so no complaints from me against VFS.
Applied online, paid online, posted on a Monday at 5pm SD, returned with visas Friday of same week before midday.
