You need a code from most hotels to access the free wifi. For hotels which charge for internet, again you wont be able to access it without paying in advance.

My understanding of the above is that I can only share with devices registered to the same Amazon Account as mine, so that doesn't include friends or family who have a different account registration or am I totally misunderstanding it?

I would love a Kindle Fire but unfortunately I have been told these are not available yet in the UK.
