For me
Goan Chicken from Bob Marley Shack, Candolim Beach.
Malai Kofta from Ice & Spice, Candolim. Or they do a Butter Chicken dish with paneer (you have to ask for it) and that's really special
Lobster with butter and garlic from Rock Bites.
For the wife....wait for it....
Prawn Cocktail and chips (same plate) from Johnny's Corner...not very Goan but it's the only place she'll eat it
What type of local are foods are good to try? Im not keen on really hot food. so what does everyone like when they are out there?
Has anyone out there tried the goan sausage? my bf says it's the most foul thing he has ever tasted? He loves the King Prawns though and xacuti!
Goan sausages range from mild to spicey. I unfortunately tried the spicey so won't be having it again. Agree, Xacuti is gorgeous, mildly spicey with loads of shredded coconut. Pork vindaloo is delicious and is absolutely nothing like a vindaloo you would get here. I would really recommend you giving this a go. Also try the local desert delicacy, Benibica -- again with coconut but is sweetened and is delicious ..... mouth watering now. Also try Tandoori Kingfish .... wonderful.
Dahl Fry, less spicy with extra corriander and carrot paneer with steamed rice, both from big banana shack........yumlicious!!!!
aloo gobi and any of the sea fish
One thing what ever you want you will get, they are always only too happy to cook & serve as you require and will ask you several times during your meal if its o.k and will be concerned if you have not eaten it all....
Here's some of my fav's
1. Just next tot he entrance to the fish market in Calangute there is a man who sells Omlette Sandwiches for 5 Rs/- - They are GORGEOUS!, not usually spicy, also has optional curry sauce to spoon in... (normally open from 4pm to 8pm I think
2. Samosa's bit further down on same side of raod is a dairy shop, they sell samosa's in the evenings, also 5 Rs/- they put them on a plate, mush them up and put sweet sauce on - yummy!
3. In Mapusa, one end of the market is a place called 'The Pub', well oposite that is a little stall holder that sells somosa's, 4 Rs/- I think, they're nice, also several places do Potato Wados???? in Bread for 3 - 5 Rs/- normally in the mornings - also very nice...
4. The usual local food is Fish Curry Rice, very cheap at most of the small restuarnts - but not really to my taste...
My favs are Nan Bread and Chicken Tikka - Try Indian Spice (Calangute) for Nan Bread - Yummy! And All Spice (Apora) for anything done in the Tandoor (not had a bad meal there EVER!)
There you go...
mmmmmmmmmmmmmm all this talk of food makes me hungry and makes me yearn to be back in goa
Samosas, veg & non veg. Egg Rolls (a bit like a scotch egg but wrapped in mashed potatoe) Meat rolls, similar to the egg but with spiced meat.
They are all great.
The girl there also makes great cakes (english style)
Best get them early as she is usually sold out by by unch time.
Steve
Oh Oh Oh... Just remembered the best thing to eat in Goa... (I've got a sweet tooth) - Has anyone been to Chocolati (Maybe not spelt correctly) - Oh my God! (Off at a tangent - Am I allowed to say God without offending none religious people? I read in the paper that someone called have the track 'Angels' by Robbie Williams at their service because it might offend 'ethnic minorities' - What a load of BEEP! -What is the world coming to...) Anyway Back on Track.... Chocolati - They're GORGEOUS! They are only open season time (means I have to wait a couple of months before I can have any But they are Fabulous! You can even smell the chocolate brownies when you drive past on a motorbike (and the building is set back from the road)... Do you want to know where it is???? I think I should work on a commision basis... Each person that I tell they have to buy me a chocolate brownie! - SOUnds like a good deal... (they're worth it!) - It's in Candolim by the way....
I came across the shop earlier this year and I agree it is all yummy .
Come on spill the beans exactly where is it?
Steve, do you mean a stall actually at the Highland Beach?, cause I can't remember one when we went or do you mean one on the main road opposite a watch repairers?
thanks Jayne
There's plenty of non spicey food available....
Jayne it is right next door to the highland, Steve is right about it selling out early, we used to order samosas the day before, especially to take to the airport onthe way home.
thanks lin will keep an eye out for it
Chocalti is indeed gorgeous.
