Me and my two daughters aged 22 and 20 - did Altinkum this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so that we plan to do it all again next summer.
After that we plan to do Icemeler and Marmaris respectively. Then probably back to Tinky :-)
It wasnt cheap - and I'd advise you to bring your own drinks such as Malibu as this is extortionate in the bars over there. Red wine was expensive also and that's my tipple :-(
Would like to know what Altinkum is like, is it lively with plenty to do day and night, have it got a nice beach. We have been to Turkey twice, Gumbet and Side.Gumbet was lively, but Side was to quiet for us at night.Someone recommended Altinkum so any feedback about the place would help me.thanks
We only went there for a day out, but although we liked the place itself, we didn`t care too much for the beach. Then again, different people look for different things from a holiday, there are lots of Altinkum devotees on this site.
We will be staying in a brand new complex owned by Seasons Holidays. It should be just completed and due to open for first time in April. It is called Gemini Park and described as a four minute drive from nearest beach and a short walk from main centre. Also described as "Conveniently located on outskirts of Altinkum". Can't decide wether this could be good or bad.
If anyone knows of this new construction, its location and any other useful Altinkum tips please reply.
Finally, hope the bars love the football as we will be there during the world cup.
Thanks for the replys, finding it hard to gather info about this resort.cheers
hi i am sure this will open up a can of worms but does any one know if there is any line or partner dancing in altinkum regards Nean
Hi, Penpusher I too will be going to Altinkum for the first time in June (4th- 18th ). I am staying at nazar studios ( described as 200m from beach and 200m from resort centre). It sounds fishy that a property is a 'short walk from the centre' and also 'conviently located on the outskirts of the resort'? Unless, of course the resort is fairly small, which is quite possible. Wouldn't it be nice to have a map of resort, even if only a rough guide? I wonder if anyone on the forum has a map of Altinkum they could scan and post for us? ( Sometimes they print them on the back of restaurant and takeaway menu's) So if anyone has one please let us know as it would be really useful- because i don't want to suddenly discover all the best places on my last couple of days as i usually do!! Heather.
Hi Meneske. I have been to Altinkum 7 times now and will be there again in August for 3 weeks. (Cant wait) The Nazar is in the most ideal position, a nanosecond from the beach, bars etc. Everything you need is just a minute or two away. I stay in the hotel next to the Nazar. Altinkum is sort of in three areas, you have the 3rd beach which is absolutely lovely, but away from any bars etc, you can get free transport there anytime of the day, from one of the 2 restaurants on the beach there. No catch at all. The second beach is at the far end of the resort, a 10 to 15 minuted walk away. Where you are staying is slap bang in the centre of the resort. I wouldnt choose to stay anywhere else. If you require any more infor, let me know and i will try to answer you. Have fun!
Hi Noa48uk- thanks for that, it is always a relief to get an idea of where your accomodation is before you arrive- one less thing to worry about! Any info at all you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Any particular agent to book trips through (i never book with holiday reps- they are so expensive), any good eateries etc. And anything you feel may be best avoided? I know different people have different tastes- but lwhen something is bad, it's bad! Thanks for any further help you can offer! Heather
Hi Heather. There are some good bars withing a stones throw of the Nazar. Directly opposite is Barneys, which is great fun, Owls Bar and The Big Nose Bar are both good and only a few yards away. Dolphin Square , packed with restaurants and bars is a 2 minute walk away. We dont tend to use those bars as we find them a bit of a rip off, but its really lively down there. Eating wise, cos im a single parent and on a budget, we usually walk back up towards Didim town (10-15 min walk) opposite Ginas supermarket you will find Saray 24 and Alo 24. These are not posh, but sort of cafe type places, where the Turkish eat. At both of these, you will get the best food, in my opinion, in Altinkum, and its very very cheap, even the beers, soft drinks etc are so much cheaper. Many English tourists have now found these places and i really recommend both. The Suer Restaurant along the front is also very good. The market is in Didim Town on a Saturday, just jump on a Dolmus. The first time i went to Altinkum, we paid to go to the market at Soke, although a lot bigger then Didim, its just the same stuff on sale, so i wudnt recommend you pay to go to another market. Love Tours or Oracle travel (we change our travellers cheques free of charge in Oracle) is whom we usually use for trips etc. Oracle also do trips to the water park in Didim, you just pay the price of entry, they take you there and back, again no catch. Any thing else you would like to know, i will try and answer you
Hi Noa48uk- Thanks for that, very helpful. I will definately seek out alo24 and seray24- as i like to eat where the locals eat- the food is always so much better- and you don't get ripped off! We will have a couple with us with a 2yr old- is there anything they should bring with them or will they be ok getting all her food and stuff there? Is there a Migros fairly local? ( I don't have young children- my daughter is now 24- so i don't really know what they might need ). One last thing ,when i go to Gumbet/ Bodrum i always notice the stuff in the shops (clothes, bags etc ) is as good as the stuff in the markets (sometimes better) and with a reasonable amount of haggling i can get it for the same price as market. Do you think this is the case in Altinkum, or will we get better deals at market? Sorry to bombard you !! Heather.
Hi again. There is a Migros a little further on than Alo24 and Saray24 on the same side of the road. Gima, which is another big (ish) supermarket is directly opposite. I really have forgotten what its like to have a 2 year old, my son is now 15, so cant really answer that question. Yes, i agree, the t shirts and tops my son bought in the shops are far better quality than the ones from the market (we've had both). Opposite the Big Nose bar is a little shop type thing where my son bought some brill tops, haggled, and got them for the same price as the market. I have found shoes, bags, cheap jewelry much cheaper at the market though. The only downside with Altinkum (and possible other resorts) is the constant hassling from shop owners/restaurants/bars etc. I lost the will to live on my first visit, and swore i would never go back to Turkey, but i just ignore it now and wouldnt go anywhere else! Please feel free to ask anything else. Wendy
Hi Wendy - yeah the hassle is a bit overbearing at times. The officials in Gumbet have patrols on the streets with camcorders and any one seen to be hassling has their licence taken away for a period of time, a few restaurants were temporarily closed when we were there last in oct 05. But there are still some persistent offenders! Like you say, it just becomes part and parcel of the holiday, but i have spoken to some who say it was so bad they won't go to Turkey again! So, all in all i don't suppose the hassle in Altinkum is going to be anything new to me, or any worse than i have found else where! If you have been on the boat trips, do you know what islands they visit, i wonder if they go the same places as the Gumbet ones (Black Island, Aquarium, Camel Beach etc..) As i have done that particular trip at least 20 times it would be nice to go to some different places! Again, thanks Heather.
Altinkum, re the hassling, but doesnt seem to make any difference. Why do they not realise, that they would get more custom if they didn't hassle??? I still get annoyed when you cant look at something in a shop before they descend on you, but with the restaurants and bars, i can cope with that, and we also have a lot of friends now in Altinkum. Owwwww roll on my 3 weeks in August, i cant wait! I usually go at the end of May too, butr i cant take my son out of school this year, what with GCSES and that:( Would be great to hear what you think of my most favourite place on earth.
Hi, Wendy- shall let you know my thoughts on Altinkum when i return. I try my best not to be too biased- but always end up thinking 'oh that's better in Gumbet' etc.. - but as it may be my only holiday this year (due to the imminent arrival of my first grandchild! )- I am absolutely determined i will enjoy it!!! Heather
