Hi
I've booked my family of 5 into the Nicki Resort in Polis for June next year (can't wait). I know Cyprus is pretty expensive and as we're self catering, I will need to budget. We've been AI the last few years.
Anyway, if anyone has any idea how much an average meal would be that would be great. We stayed in Pernera years back and the food there was fantastic and very cheap, averaging about £3.50 for a main meal.
I am expecting it to be a bit more than that though!!!
thanks in advance.
Also some of the smaller shops are a lot dearer than others, the big Co-op half way from Polis centre to the Nicki is probably the most reasonable price wise.
Hope this helps.
In all my years in Cyprus Ive never had a main meal for 3.50 not even in mcdonalds - your doing well!!
Like anywhere in the world, you could double that for a a la carte restaurant or halve it for a little taverna in the middle of no where.
Having been to cyprus several times a year for the last few years I think £40 for 4 is a fairly safe average.
Jim
As already stated prices are similar to UK.
However it depends on where you choose to dine.
Peyia Tavern on the village main street is a very reasonable traditional taverna - it's clientel mainly expats but somewhat off the regular tourist route.
Shop around but I would recommend off the beaten track as opposed to "The Strip".
Have a lovely holiday, we will be there in June too!! (Paphos region)

Expensive compared to the UK??? no way I had to get my wallet out last night, always a sad thing to have to do , I paid for a meze (local feast) including too much wine and Ouzo and a huge plate of fresh fruit the bill came to £38.....for four of us..and it was a good job the wife does not drink booze..expensive who told you that you have been misinformed, keep to where the locals go stay clear of the tourist area's if possible..
great photo.....brings back happy memories of our holiday earlier in the year.
They certainly know how to put on a spread...
They do indeed...but you know what is missing from that Meze???
Funnily enough, something we have never tried when we have been to Cyprus. Will rectify that in July though......... we are going back to Protaras (10 of us altogethor) and hubby and son are going to have a
Meze.
My daughter and i are Vegi, so hope we will see a Vegi version.
35weeks tomorrow................. xx
A vegie in Cyprus...like hens teeth, big meat eaters the Cypriots...but loads of veg available here and cheap when in season..
OOh thanks Jim. Might talk to you soon....... xx
You can still get a damn good meal for less than £10cyp per head and that's not too bad....
Same happened in both the Canaries and the Baleriacs, once both were damn cheap for dining out then started to catch up with the UK when they became increasingly popular with tourists.
I think the art of dining out in Cyprus is finding a really good place like Nicolas at Protaras, then you will enjoy the meal so much you will hardly notice that it is almost as expensive as the UK...like the UK, you only get what you pay for.
Are you saying prices have remained static in the UK compared to here? if so this was certainly not my findings over the last few months, I have not visited the UK in four years so I could not gauge the increase's here in Cyprus, but many friends and family have told me how expensive eating out in the UK has become, (it always was mind) CY is far cheaper than say Spain or Italy, agreed not in the same class as say France were we paid nearly £150 sterling for a lunch for six, cant think of another destination apart from the Eastern block Countries where you can eat out cheaper than in Cyprus..it is no contest! If you know where to eat here..
stay away from the tourist area's if it's at all possible. drive just a few miles inland to a village taverna or resturant..
The UK retail food price index which is of course retail supermarket prices, has shown very little change since 2000, in fact the infamous 'Which' 50 supermarket products, the top 50 foods available in supermarkets in the UK has dropped for the last three years due to fierce supermarket price wars.
This has started to trickle down to eating out as well, there is far more competition between resturaunts and Pubs here now and a Sunday lunch in pubs in Devon has never been this low for years.
Pub chains like Wetherspoons have also driven down the price of eating out and therefore the UK has stabilised, all be it false due to stiff competition regarding eating out prices.
Of course Cyprus is still cheaper, but the difference to Brits holidaying in Cyprus is not nearly as prominent as it was say 5 years ago. The gap is without doubt shrinking, as will the property price gap as Cyprus gets more popular.
The same thing happened in the Costas, they were once dirt cheap but grew more expensive as they became more popular. Invariably, the same will happen to Cyprus as it has to just about all other holiday destinations, it's just the way the tourism market works.
There is far more to going on holiday than cheap prices though, we visit Cyprus not for value but for the beauty of the island and the friendly nature of the Cypriots toward tourists, which the Costas seemed to lose over the years.
I will let you know soon as I making a very brief visit to the UK..
I will do some comparisons, I know for sure that because of the massive competition the UK has with it's food outlets (supermarkets) there is no way they could compete on prices in supermarkets here compared to the UK...imported foodstuffs here will always be more expensive, more reason's to stick with the local produce as we do!
regards..
We also go to Cyprus, because we think its a beautiful country, with beautiful scenery. The people there are very friendly aswell, and welcoming.
Im quite suprised at hom many people "question" how dear its going to be, etc., when thy go on Holiday.
We are not bothered how much it wll cost us when we are on Holiday....... after all, we save up, and work hard all year to have the pleasure of visiting this delightful country.
If people want a "cheaper" alternative to Cyprus, there are plenty of other countries to choose from. xx
