PROTARAS

We also fly out to Protaras on the 30th. There's a lovely little taverna on the main road, next to what I know as the Lord of the Rings pub. Its away from the main strip but not too far. Find the Sfinx bar (you can't miss it!), walk "away" from the bars area and cross the road. Only a small place, but great traditional food -terrific meze. The gentleman who runs it is a refugee from Famagusta and built his business up from nothing.

Baggie boy - so how much is a typical meze for adults???? do they do children's menus as well - although in all honesty my eldest child (8) i think would be allright with the meze but the youngest (4) would prob ask for chips lol!

any more advice????

Last October you could get a meze for between £6 - £8 each - I doubt prices will have changed much. They are absolutely huge, so you could probably get away with just ordering a meze for the adults and let the kids dip in. Chips generally always appear at some stage. Big tip - don't fill up on bread! You usually get a whole loaf more or less, but hold back for the meat dishes.

Mezes are great social meals. Take your time over it - it won't go cold! Wash it down with a bottle of wine (or two) - a perfect Cyprus evening.

One more tip - get a big table! Wifey and me usually get a table for 4 when we meze - you'll need the space!

regards,

Richie

hi we stayed at rising star in october last year, just across from golden star, the astoria which is just up from golden star before the strip is really nice for food and we also really liked nicholas taverna.
the yainna marie which is part of the golden star is also nice for a lunch as it has fantastic views, we are also hooked on cyprus after our first visit last year and are going back in october again.

Firstly, Rach 24 - thank you for starting this thread, we are going to Cyprus for the first time in 2 weeks, staying in Protaras, and I was also a bit worried from some of the comments previously posted on this forum that it would be a bit over-commercialised and tacky (the last thing I want on holiday is a Big Mac or KFC!) so I am relived to read that things are not as bad as I previously expected!!!
Secondly, please can someone tell me how to get to Nicolas Taverna from the Alva Apartments? I've read loads of good things about Nicolas so we will definitely get it a try! (I did ask this question recently on another thread but didn't get a reply).
Also, can anyone tell me what the Parko (? spelling, not sure) Restaurant that is attached to the Alva Apartments is like?
(Rach, aplologies for hi-jacking your thread!)

i would suggest that you all try to go to pernera for your evening meal at least 1 night as there are loads of excellent restaurants to pick from and it is certainly less commercialised than protaras.

There is a very good traditional Cypriot taverna just down from the Isaac on the left hand side. it is called Iffalos,, Right across from the car hire place,,,,

This is where a lot of locals and ex pats eat my friends go there at least once a week they said the food is excellent.

The bay is called the Marlita bay, it is a small sandy and rocky cove but all round the area of Pernera there a small coves, straight across from Issac walk down to Polynexia and you will fins another sandy beach just round from there.

Pernera has the reputation for having the better eating places than Protaras.

Hi Dave
We are just getting ready to shot off again Wednesday :D :D as far as I am aware rebuilding has started and its flat out to get ready for the tourist season opening up..

When we went over February work had not started,,, My daughter is there now they have just been to the Camel Park at Mazotos and had a great time.. its in the opposite direction from Larnaca airport about 10 kilometres,,

The kids liked it £1 for adults and 50 cents for kids, free if you take a camel ride, :)

Hi Retsina

The Alva apartments are located on the 'Strip' and nearer the end where Nicolas Tavern is. If you can spot the large Chinese restaurant, Nicolas Tavern is on the other side of the road, close to the end of the one way road. Not very far from where you are staying.

Kezza

Thanks Kezza, that's great news that Nicolas Taverna is very near to us at Alva apartments - not too far to walk or to stagger back :P
Thanks to Elizabeth and Daveeboy too for the recommendation to go to Pernera, I'm afraid we're very lazy on holiday and expect everything to be more or less on our doorstep but if we feel like a change of scenery one night we will venture to Pernera.

elizabeth - many thanks for replying about the bays and restaurants. we will certainly try Iffalos especially if the locals eat there as this to me is a good sign!

this may seem a stupid question, but im not quite sure where the Issac apartments are althoug we are staying there  are they in pernera???? from what you have said i am hoping that they are as hopefully this wont be as commercialised as protaras.

once again, many thanks for the help and any further advice is greatly appreciated.
