Discussions regarding holidays in Goa.
If this situation continues, I can see us either looking to go elsewhere next year or book to go after Christmas next year.

There is plenty of work available in Goa besides the shacks. On the cotruction sites, but the majority of Goans will not do it which is why the building sites are full of migrants. There is plenty of building going on in Goa so they do have an option.

Seriously considering canceling our holiday. I'll cut my losses and go somewhere else thats 'open' instead.

meagain: Sorry i have to reply to your earlier thread because its totally wrong. I have been down to Baga today and yes there are shacks open but these are the permanent ones on private land, there is approx 6 at the end not "loads"...Just don't want anyone to build thier hopes up because as it stands at the moment there are NO temporary shacks up.
I will say there seemed plenty of spare sunbeds lined up at the end of Baga and very few Europeon tourists around mostly Indian.
Also it is possible to get a drink or have food at any of the private shacks that are open.

What I cannot understand is, given the usual perception that anything in Goa is sorted out by bribes and backhanders, why they haven't simply put the shack allocation out to bids.
40 shacks= 40 highest bids..............simples!

Paxrax, can you confirm that Monicas will not be Monicas this season?
and is this the same Monicas that i am thinking of, Candolim beach just past the R. Princess
I think it was Monica and Ignacious who run it.

Of course there are no temporary shacks open have you not read the news but six permanent shacks and I think you should count again because I think it is near eight but even six equals 120 sunbeds if they stay legal.

Did you have a problem getting a sunbed or a meal

Just how many do you need to meet your requirements

I got back from Goa on Tuesday Monica was on the beach no shack but had sunbeds and was cooking food in the shed they keep all the shack in during monsoon

we were in calangute during the monsoon and even then we found a place to eat/drink/relax on the beach. there are enough shacks built on private property to serve tourists till the season starts full and the licences are given out. i cannot beleive that the problem is so critical that some of HT-rs take it as a signal to change the holiday destination. and if they do ... god bless them! i personally find so much more in goa/india than just shacks and cheap booze. that i will go back despite that the place has changed till 1970 i was there. i was in kovalam beach/kerala last year, beach with no shacks - amazing!
we will be in dwarka (suggested in this forum) and i'm sure we enjoy this despite that there are no shacks.
this is athmosfere, culture, people of this country that we love. shacks are there- good. there are no shacks- ok.
we have friends there we are longing to meet. there is still the warm ocean and the sun. there is allways delicious food, if you know where to find it. and there are the people of india with all the wisdom and so different understanding of life compared with us. to get knowing this deeper only, is the bonus to holiday by the sea.
this is IMHO.

Elephant,

Cracking positive post. Was initially gutted about the shack situation but hey,we are going to have a great time regardless.

Have to agree with some other posters though. Is there any other destination that does more to discourage tourists?

Fare post Elephant, but like myself and many others, a 2 week stay isn't a great amount of time to be going here, there and everywhere, apart from short 'tourist trip places' that most have done anyway - it's the only main 2 weeks of the year we get to relax from work, so chilling out on the beach each day and mixing it with trips to the local towns etc. are all we seem to do these days.
My other half is also one for not wanting a 3 or 4 (or more) day break away from the resort of our choice (if it was only me there, then sure I would be on trains and making an effort to see the rest of Goa and it's hidden gems).
There are many who have more than 2 weeks (and a stash more cash), something I really envy, but hey, it's my hard earned cash and my 2 weeks of freedom, to enjoy at my leisure.
Love the photos you put up for all to enjoy, and one day would love to follow in your footsteps of those brilliant adventures you have (I'll get me chance sometime..)
Another text from Ganesh shack today to confirm the next meeting in Delhi 27th November, he also says the hotels have a say in all this, ''not wanting business taken from them'' - have said this over the last few years about how late liscences are granted, if anyone can update on this please do
No falling out with you Elephant, I like your pics and your holiday stories.
Spike.

meagain: reading your first thread "There seems to be a lot of rubbish on here about the shacks" gave me and maybe others the opinion that things were fine and the shacks were up and running!!
6 or 8 they are the permanent shacks on private land, not the temporary shacks that people are talking about. I'm sure i would have had no problem in getting a drink or meal as i put in my previous post, personally it is not somewhwere i frequent.

Hi Spaldy

Have I got this right,

You agree that there could be up to eight "establishments" that have sunbeds and sunshades out on Baga beach and they are providing meals and drinks if required to anyone with the funds the to pay for them but you think I misled everyone in mentioning it and they should not be counted as places people should go because you don't normally frequent this area

It was very kind of you to check out what I said even if you don't agree that what I said was true, do you do this checking out for all the posters on HT, is this your job out here, I hope I won't get a bill for your time and expenses
Reply
meagain: Yes i agree there are 6-8 " fixed establishments" on private property at Baga that have access to sunbeds and shades. These "establishments" are providing drinks and meals but the point i'm trying to make is that besides a couple of monsoon months these places are always there and open for business.
What i am saying is there are NO temporary shacks on the beach...'Big Banana,Jacks Shack,Johnny's ect ect.
I don't do this "checking out" for all posters but i thought your comments were "misguiding".
In answer to your question i have no job in Goa infact i retired when i was 21 years old. As for expenses i really do not need the money.

Please feel free to reply "meagain" but i shall leave it at that as i do not want this to end up as a closed topic as i know it is of great importance to many people.

:cheers 1st timers to goa ,flying out tomorrow and i honestly don,t know what the fuss is about,i,m sure as in any other country there will be plenty of places to eat and drink, whether the shacks are there or not is of little consequence to our paty of 4,and yes we do like a drink or 3 .we are coming to goa to experience the culture, the people and the country, do people travel all the way to goa just to sit at the shacks all day,it would seem so from some of the comments,i find that amazing, and as for comments like, it will stop 1st timers returning to goa, what a load of rubbish,i wish people would stop making comments on behalf of myself and the other 1st timers,i,m sure we can make decisions for ourselves and don,t need others to do it for us,have a nice day hope your not to hungry or thirsty lol
