I feel really sorry for the shack owners waiting to start earning this years living and fear prices will rise to cover the higher licences bigger bribes and shorter season.

I agree with this to a point but isn't part of the delay in getting the shacks up due to the 2 rival shack owner groups (SOWS & TGSOA) disagreeing with the proposal from the Tourism Department?

I would be very surprised if prices didn't rise to cover the probable (assuming the shacks aren't up and running before the beginning of December) the one-sixth of lost income from the UK season.

Talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face, this shambles is just another example of the rampant greed endemic in Goa with, in the background, I suspect, Hoteliers and the like rubbing their hands, as the rival shack associations shoot each other in the foot. I've no doubt at all that when the dust settles, prices will be hiked to make up for the shortfall. What they dont realise is that most of us are not on a bottomless budget, and will cut our cloth accordingly, costs to get to Goa have spiralled, visas and what not have increased, and the gap between Goa and its Far East rivals get ever smaller. I wonder how many of the first time tourists who are in Goa at present will return next year? I suspect not many. But of course, business astuteness was never a strong point of those involved in the tourist industry in Goa. Alan

I love my holidays to Goa, and part of the pleasure is relaxing on the beach and having lunch at the shacks. I know many other tourists find this is a big attaction too. The powers that be really aren't doing themselves any favours are they?

Those of us who are regulars may still go back for a few more years, but as for the first timers, they will be wondering what on earth we have all been raving about, and may well choose not to return.

Of course they won't return.
Just spoken to 2 shack owners (The Ritz and Greggs) both looking well pxxxed off....asked them when the shacks are opening,to which they replied "don't know december"!
Anyway not all doom and gloom in the village of Calangute we've had a bit of sunshine today! :sun2

I was thinking of going out to Goa in November 2010 but without the shacks it would not be the same , if they cannot get their act together for the start of the season then it looks like Jamaica or Thailand

Hi just had phone call from friends who arrived in Goa this morning,shacks are going up and some already open :cheers

they are staying in Holiday Street so probably that area of the beach

weather is also good :sun2

only 2more days for us

Sorry to rain on your parades but this is just not true - I live on Holiday Street and believe me the only true shack that is up is the Blue Dolphin that belongs to Golden Eye.
There are beds on the beach and some people are providing food and drinks from somewhere but not from the shacks as you know them.
The allotment has not taken place and nobody knows when this will happen - it had not happened this afternoon so the shacks have not had the word to where and when and when they do they will not be up in the next few days.

Cannot believe this!!! our friends arrived in Kingstork Holiday Street [THIS MORNING]
went for a walk to the beach and phoned later to give the good news

will try and find
out more when i speak to them tomorrow,but the message was clear shacks going up
and some open :que

,hope to have more news before we leave on Sunday :cheers

They may have been TOLD shacks are going up and they will have seen the couple of shacks open that are in what i presume is private grounds or attatched to a hotel/resort.

The Flying Dolphin will be open as it usually is, isn't it? Its attached to the hotel. It was the only one up and running the first time we went. However, other shack owners will probably have chairs out.
