We were lucky enough that we pre-booked, so didn't have to queue to get in. But, everyone is just shoved through in a big "conga", and like someone said about the Vatican, all you can see is the person shuffling along in front of you! There isn't any time you can stop to look at something in more detail, and sometimes even reading the little bits of info was too hard because you have to keep up with the line!
Don't get me wrong, it was a very emotional and fascinating place that I'll never forget, I just wish they could limit the amount of people in there at any one time.

I am not particularly religious but I do love history and I was awe struck at everything when I went into Israel..it was my life time ambition to go there and visit Jerusalem. I was quite emotional when I got there in Christmas week...and I guess that is maybe why I was so disappointed at what I felt was a lack of respect for its culture and history by some of the people living there when I saw all that rubbish, dirt and squalor and was hassled to buy cr@p by men that were virtually beggars.
I didn't find Anne Frank's House a disappointment at all. I didn't have to pre-book and it wasn't at all busy when I was there, so you weren't herded along and had plenty of time to view everything at your leisure. It was an incredibly moving and humbling experience for me, and I'd certainly rate it among the "must do" experiences for anyone visiting Amsterdam.
Justval,We also visited Jerusalem 37 years ago on our honeymoon and it was like that then, beggars and pickpockets and dirty, children as you as 4 years old giving us a packet of sweets then running off, only to come back later for the money,we was about to walk inside one of the churches when a guard pulled his gun out on us shouting and pointing it,we found out it was because we was holding hands!! frightening experience.
The herded cattle feeling you get when you visit the Caves of Drach meant it was a big disappointment for me too. Even the music boat at the end seemed cheesy. The Caves of Arta were much better IMO as there were no security guards lining the route to stop you taking photos and because it's not a Tour operator trip to my knowledge, the groups of visitors are much smaller and you get a proper 45 minute guided tour too.
Drach is best viewed first thing in the morning. Go in with the musicians and you will only hve to share it with about half a dozen people.
