the hippy market in ibiza
the first time we went there we saw all these people that looked like 60's drop outs at their stalls and a huge sign saying they accepted visa!!!

the market was just the same as all the others in spain with loads of stalls selling the same tat.

Have to agree with others who have mentioned Rome. The queues around the Vatican went on for miles and then the Colisseum we never got anywhere near because of the queues. Just watched all the people getting ripped off by the so called "gladiators" posing outside the colisseum encouranging you to have your photo taken (with your own camera!!) and charging ridiculous prices for the so called honour. An elderley couple on a cruise didn't realise they would have to pay and were charged 30 euros!!

For us we would never go back to Barcelona. Having had an attempted pick pocket on the Metro and seen/read some of the horror stories with pick pockets and bag snatchers had put us off forever.

Barcalona has reminded me of that unfinished church thing. What a monstrosity. You would think that now Goudie is dead they would tear the thing down and build something beautiful instead!

For me it was Niagara falls, I really expected it to be much higher than it was, also the sphinx in Cairo was a big disappointment. :(

Cannot believe anyone thinks Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is a "monstrosity" - it's a masterpiece, even though it is unfinished!

So did I. Gaudi can do no wrong in my eyes. Stunning.

Knossos (the palace of the Minoan kings) in Crete. The most desecrated site in the world. Thousands of years old - all that history, and some idiot (Arthur Evans) came along and rebuilt loads of it in concrete and repainted the ancient frescoes  When we went this summer we weren't allowed to see a lot of it because more "work" is being done.

The Old Market in Naama Bay, Sharm el Sheikh. Nightmare!!

Sorry but Goudie is like the Emporer's new clothes. Everyone thinks it is great but in reality he just used every colour in the box without any talent whatsoever. IMHO. Lets be honest, it has taken them 130 years to half finish the thing. If they really liked it you would think they would have put a spurt on to finish it! The thing is not a patch on the Gothic Cathedral just off the Ramblas.

Don't get me started on Dali!

Niagara falls were absolutly stunning. However when we went they were frozen, it was snowing and there were about 50 tourists in the whole resort.

Have to agree about the Hippy Market though. Just the same moving market with a different name. Any true 60s hippy would be dead long since!

Hastings is still my No 1 pits though.

So presumably the fact that it took going on for 170 years to complete the main part of the Gothic cathedral and then nearly a further 450 years to get around to actually completing the facade and the spire means that the builders and the people at the time really hated it! :D

The gothic cathedral in it's current state was started in the mid-15th century and only reached its current finished state in 1913. So by my reckoning they've still got another 4 centuries before we can expect the La Sacre Familia to be finished and of course by then, tourists in the 26th century will probably recognise it for the masterpiece some of us think it already is!

La Sacre Familia

La Sagrada Familia

I think the only thing that I regret I'll never see finished in my lifetime is La Sagrada Familia. I find it mindblowing in its current state - it will be absolutely awesome (in the literal sense of the word) when finished.

3 things for me were: 1) The inside of Palma Cathedral - far to dark and the amount of tour groups. 2) The "Gladiators" at the Colisseum in Rome, which someone else mentioned as well. 3) The queue to get into the mueseum in Florence to see the statue of David. I was quite happy seeing the copy outside in one of the nearby squares. Didn't fancy standing in a queue for about 5-6 hours just to see the origingal.
I did like the Duomo Cathedral in Florence, especially the views from the top, on a clear day.

I went to Venice 35 years ago in October and it was fantastico. Went back 12 years later in July and it was a bustling tourist trap with little to endear it.

Both times I never experienced any bad smells?

My first trip to Venice was in 1970 and it was already a tourist trap. Excessive amounts being charged at rip off cafés for coffee etc. I've been many times since and it doesn't get any better but like most major European cities there are always areas of calm and serenity that make a visit worthwhile.

I haven't been to Barcelona since 1963 but will be making a short visit next spring. One of my few remaining memories of the city are the weird and wonderful Gaudi designed buildings, can't wait to see them again.

Since 1963 you will have noticed that they have changed 3 of the light bulbs in Goudie's church! Jerry builders! I hope they didn't pay up front for materials.
