Could someone please advise. We booked our diy holiday last october (2006) to go away july 2007. I also took out insurance at the same time. However my husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetics about 5 weeks ago. I have noticed a lot of posts concerning pre-existing medical conditions when taking out insurance, but what about conditions which are diagnosed after taking out the insurance. Do i need to contact the insurance company and can they alter any cover we already, request further premiums, or impose any conditions. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

They will either say you are covered, charge an extra premium or exclude the condition.

I would support Kath's advice. If you check your policy wording carefully, you'll almost certainly find a condition requiring you to notify the Insurer of any material alteration to the risk (which a newly diagnosed medical condition would certainly be regarded as.)I'd suggest that you write down details of dates of diagnosis and any medication prescribed before you 'phone them as the more information you can give them, the easier and quicker they'll be able to give you a decision.Don't worry - it's not the sort of thing that will prevent you having insurance, but it's best to know that your Insurers are aware of the situation and that the policy cover is valid.
thanks in advance tracey
tick the box when you order - I think they charge an extra £1 for this, but when you think about the cost and hassle of having to print it all out at home (and not everone has a printer), I don't mind paying the extra £1.
In their post pack, Insure & Go include a plastic card (credit card size) with your policy number and emergency phone number which is handy to pop in your wallet/purse on days out instead of carrying all the documents with you in case of accidents.
I have used Insure & Go and Atlas in the past and they both send the documents in the post as long as you In their post pack, Insure & Go include a plastic card (credit card size) with your policy number and emergency phone number which is handy to pop in your wallet/purse on days out instead of carrying all the documents with you in case of accidents.
directtravel insurance services are competetive and issue documents by post following online purchase.Renewal documents are also sent by surface mail.Website is :http://www.direct-travel.co.uk
thanks cyberspacekadette, just bought a policy from atlas.
I've got travel insurance provided through my bank account (for free) for me and one other, which suits me & my fiance fine when we go away on 15th july. However, i'm worried because they don't send you out a copy of the insurance so i've no idea about the terms and conditions, small print or anything else, just that if anything happens to phone them and quote my account number!
Is this right or should I buy some through a provider where they'll send me the information? I just phoned the bank up and told them I was going away, gave them my account number and they said "that's fine, have a nice time" so I asked about sending policies out etc and they said they don't! They didn't even ask the dates when i would be away!
free insurance usually gives minimum cover only, quite often it will not cover you if anything happens and you have to cancell.....in other words you get what you pay for
Personally, for peace of mind, I would take out my own policy that I had read thorougly and knew covered me for everything. There are plenty of recommendations for low cost policies on page 1 of this topic.
For what it's worth, I think the attitude of your bank is appalling. I would try calling them again and perhaps if you got a different person, they may be more helpful. I would also ask them how you are supposed to know what you are covered for.

thats what i thought! *goes to hunt for some insurance*
Can some one give me some advice. My partners mother had a stroke last night and we are due to go on holiday the end of July. Does our travel insurance cover me as well if my partners mother takes a turn for the worse when we are abroad. ie will it cover the cost of flying me home as well. I am worried that I wont be included in the cover because we are not married.
but they did eventually agree to pay
i am not married to my partner but as we live together he was covered
hope this helps
hope mum in law gets better
make sure you inform insurance company of change of curcumstances
ie yo might need to fly home etc because of illness
Thanks for the reply pat.e10 I will phone the travel agents when I come back from the hospital today. I took out their travel insurance.
We do, however have a policy with the terms and conditions - which came with the account pack and also can be downloaded off the bank site.
This probably isn't actually a 'free' insurance because we pay a little extra each month for the gold account.
We have in the past used Insure and Go and when we had to claim following an accident while abroad they were absolutely useless!!

I just wonder are there any other HT members with a similar condition, have you made it known on travel insurance, and what was the out come
I would hate to get travel insurance and for the company refuse, because at the moment I am tired and exausted mostly from work, which affects how I feel.
To a normal person in the street I look drunk, stumbling all over the place, when it is realy my condition, and how I feel
I have Nationwide BS travel insurance and they have covered both my husband's and my own medical conditions, even though their previous underwriters would not cover mine on previous policies.
You also need to declare medical conditions of anyone on whom your travel depends. For example, I have declared that my dad suffered from pulmonary emboli 4 years ago and after several questions they have also covered this. My dad wouldn't be travelling with us, but if anything happened to him when we were going on holiday then we wouldn't want to travel.
If you have an annual policy then you have to declare everything each time you renew. I forgot about this and have had to call a couple of times as I remembered things that may affect my insurance. I forgot because on a previous occasion they had OK'd a couple of things I had declared, but you need to so this each time.

Can anyone advise - if a break is booked in Rome for the sole reason of celebrating a relatives birthday + if she were unable to go ( sometimes has back problems ) + if this condition were declared to insurance , would they refund the other folk in the party . Obviously I will declare the sole reason for the trip and her condition . She has been free of major problems for at least two years
Stanley ... each person would need to make a claim on their own policy. But for other members of the party to be able to make such a claim in the event of cancellation, they would also have to declare pre-existing illnesses affecting them or any others on whom the holiday may depend.
