Calagute is a busy resort, by day the main road is very busy with traffic, and the odd cow which adds to the atmosphere, it is a third world country, and there is a lot of untidiness about, you have to look beyond that, and see the people, they are very friendly and helpful.
The resort has bars, but it is a pleasure to visit one of the many restaurants and spend your evening enjoying a meal which will fill you up for a very small amount of money.
The beach at Calangute is long and clean, the sea can be a little rough, but it's great fun watching the local families on a Sunday enjoying themselves in the water, even if Mother is wearing a sari.
There are many beach bars and restaurants along the beach all selling good food.
All in all, if you're fussy, don't go, but if you like local culture you'll love it, especially if you're an old hippy, this was were they hung out in the 60's
Yeah Man.

We are back in Goa Jan to March 2007 (our 8th time in Goa)We normally stay in the Calangute area although we have stayed in Arpora and Candolim but usually we end up in Calangute for our entertainment normally in BABUTES on Top which is directly next to Dona Terezhena Hotel (another good place to stay)
Goan people cannot do enough for holidaymakers, we have had the same taxi driver for 7 years called DEAN he is like a son to us we have been to his Goan home and had a delicious meal which his wife cooked for us.
Next year we are in Goa for 3 months from Jan to March 3 months as we love it so much. The Goan people are lovely especially the kiddies on the beach everybody is so helpful they cannot do enough for you.
We normally relax on Golden Eye beach lounging at the Sip and Dip with our extended Indian family (Lexi and her lovely kiddies where you can have a meal and a fabulous massage from Lexi or her mum.
Goa is the place to be for a fantastic holiday with lovely people , also more English holiday makers than any other nationality so we normally bump into friends from previous years also friends who have bought property in Goa.The weather is FAB and most Goans speak English.

Calangute is a very busy resort plenty shops market stalls and loads of taxi,s tut tuts and the bus station.
Eating places ,you name it Calangute has it,and believe me you will be remembered the year after by at least one person.
The beach is very busy by the steps at weekend with visitors from bombay ,there are loads of beach shacks all wanting your custom on the sunbeds and bars, but everyone seems to have a favourite one that they go back to.
Ours is Jolly boys walking towards Candolim on the beach, and up the other way towards Baga Tequila.

We stayed in Calangute which I really enjoyed, I thought Baga was too busy and full of tourists. It was more expensive in Baga but seemed to have slightly posher resturants etc.
Calangute has lovely little shops, some fantastic resturants like, Casandra and Oceanic. They only place I did not like because it made me sick was The Capricorn. I later found out that two other women from my hotel were also poorly after eating here!
Calangute was busy but I thought it was fab! I cant wait to go back.
As for the beach, towards Baga was alot busier, we turned left at the steps and found a fantastic beach shack call Sea Pearl Cafe only about 5 down from the beginning. The staff were outstanding and they kept the locals away so we did not get pestered once.
The food was fantastic and very cheap.
Hope you enjoy Goa, I cant wait to go back!

Calangute ok but aways being bothered by hawkers and you will be ripped off if you're unwary!! Beware the chemist at the end of the main road near the beach, he WILL rip you off. 3 other decent ones up the road. Be prepared for poverty and limited nightlife, Baga much better for this. Also garbage everywhere!

Very very clean.
No entertainment but it only has 20 rooms.
We went to Candolim Beach most days to meet rest of our family.
The beach was very good, yes would visit again.

As our first time to Goa we appeared to be in the middle so to speak.
It wasn't far from anywhere and buses/taxis were right outside the hotel. Going back this year!
