We have been to Cala D'or before when my 5 year old was 18 months old so didn't notice the lack of things to do for kids. Apart from the beach or the pool there was nothing. As they couldn't always agree (one didn't like the sand and the baby didn't like the freezing pool), we had to split up a few times.
Lots of bars and restaurants to choose from and although the waiters were good with the kids, there were no play areas to keep them occupied.
Lots of stray cats and dogs roaming the streets and sniffing around which is not what you want when you're trying to eat. This, of course, also led the large amounts of doo doo around the place (caused by the dogs not me!)
The beach was excellent and had the usual amenities. Is only narrow but quite long so could easily get a speck.
Would go back but only when the kids are a lot older.

Cala Dor is a very clean place. The resort entertainment seemed to be closing down towards the end of our holiday. The beach standard was excellent.

The resort seemed very clean, although when wondering around we did walk along some roads that seemed to be magnets for dog mess.
The entertainment was poor, but we expected it to be as we went in October when it is very quiet.
The beach was ok, sand and water were nice, but there is only really one reasonble beach (Cala Gran) and it is not that big. I can imagine in the summer it would be awfully cramped on there.

The resort Cala Egos is small but plenty to do, there are shops, restaurants and bars. If you want more it is only 4.50 euros in a taxi to Cala D'or which is very cheap.
Highly recommend Bogarts music bar, very welcoming and a good laugh.
Would definitely go back to Cala Egos or Cala Dor, one of the best areas in Majorca that I have visited.

We stayed in Es Forti which was clean but the beach was awful and the sea disgusting. Our two children wouldnt go near it and we ended up going back to the pool at the hotel. They need to clean that up, its a wonder children and adults are not coming down with an illness after going in there. Couldnt believe some parents taking their toddlers into it. The best beach we found was at Cala Mondrago (about 1/2 hr bus ride) its really nice and there are two lovely restaurants/cafes right on the beach and you can walk to the nature reserve beach from there too. Halfway you can sit on a 'landing pad' as I called it and watch the posh boats coming in to dock for a while. We went to that beach three times. We also went to Les Trenc (half of this is a naturist beach and you will see some sights be warned. This beach was about 45 mins by bus and its out in the sticks and only one shack type cafe, nothing else around. Very long beach quite white sand but the sea had a funny smell. The heavens opened whilst we there for nearly two hours and everyone took shelter under the shack cafe - not nice as the only bus back was at 5pm and we still had a few hours left. There was one hotel quite near the Cala Mondrago beach that looked nice, would stop there but there are so many places in the world that I wouldnt go back anywhere a second time until I had seen them all. Think most of Majorca has had its day - Italy here we come. After being in Jamaica and Bahamas earlier in the year it was a big contrast.

Cala Gran beach is lovely - just a small cove. The resort itself is very attractive and welcoming. You relax immediately because of the welcome from local people.
The Marina is also lovely and has some really nice restaurants.
One thing we noticed this year was the number of people selling watches, bags etc whilst you were having a quiet drink or meal - this has certainly increased since last year - although they are pleasant it can be a real pain whilst you are trying to eat a meal and when one moves on, there's another just behind him.

Admittedly this being a 'family' complex, there were the usual screaming children around the pool and you found your typical 'loud british holiday maker' alot, but taking the time to walk to the beaches was well worth the effort, more space, less noise.
The actual 'town' of Cala Dor is about 15 mins away, very busy plenty of bars and restaurants and shops so there is plenty of nightlife if you want it. We prefered to eat at the many restaurants around the marina which is right on your doorstep and less 'english' than the restaurants in the town.
All in all a very good week's holiday and yes, we would go there again.

Cala Egos is the smaller sister resort of Cala d'Or. Many bars and restaurants all to a good standard.
The beach was small but seemed clean and well maintained. Cala d'Or 30 minuite walk, via the marina which features million pound crafts and some classy restauraunts.
September was a nice time to visit as it was not too crowded I imagine the beach would be too crowded in high season, I read some reviews of rubbish in the sea I
saw no evidence of this at all.
I reccomend a trip to Cala Mandrago 20 minutes away by local bus 2 euros return, turquoise sea and nice surroundings.
No complaints at all Cala d'Or, Cala Egos excellent resorts for families or couples no yobs or drunks just people having a relaxing time.
