Beaches
19 years 2 months ago
the beach was gorgeous, apart from cigarette butts in the sand. There are loads of ceramic pots specially for the butts but people were often too lazy to use them. The beach has security guards and you often saw police on horseback - they ensure you don't get pestered too much by people selling things - a "no thank-you" and they do leave you alone. we were quite far away from where the "entertainment" was but it was so loud and went on so late that i found it difficlut to sleep.

Follow the main road from the hotel and you soon reach the odd new shopping centres, cafes, bars and restaurants mainly busy in the evenings full of tourists, further on as you reach the older part of Sousse there are the odd shops until you reach the centre, just off the centre is the bus station a railway station where you can get a return ticket to Hamammet for £5 each. Also behind the fortified wall is the Medina, beware Ali Baba and his carpets, baby tortoises for sale, fake cigarettes and don`t let the sellers crowd you, otherwise it is an experience not to miss.

This resort had the best of both worlds, modern hotels and facilities mixed in and around the ancient city and homes of the local people. Found the Medina fascinating, but a sense of humour required to survive the traders, plenty of bargains to be had, I'll be doing my Xmas shopping there.
All in all one of the best holidays I've had in ages, laughed for a fortnight.

I would certainly return to this hotel, although the resort itself is just made up of hotels, Sousse and Monastire and only 8 dinars by taxi away, ot the local bus, about 1 dinar, you get your transport from the hotel gates. The trips are good value, the beach is very nice, although the sea is a funny colour, like khaki, we would definatly go back.

The resort of Sousse is only half an hour drive from the airport so you don't have to be stuck on a coach for too long, most if not all are air coditioned, taxis are widely available and are not too expensive, the resort itself is very clean.
The medina can be closed in at times which if sufferers of clostraphobia visit may become aggitated, apart from this is well worth visiting as you can haggle and get some really good bargains, firm but fair is the best way.
The resort livens up a little after 10pm wen the discos or karaokes get going so if you get bored with the entertainmet at the jinene ,just jump in a cab and go to the center,or there is a good irish pub O Conners ,tho no-one is actualy irish that works there, which is a five minute walk to the right of the hotel.
If you fancy days out and trips it is worth you going throgh your reps as the prices are not too costly i.e Pirates and Gladiators through Thomas Cook roughly £15 including food & drinks, first is the visit to el jem then onto a galleon where you get to either fish or take a dip or both if you choose to do so,beware if you get a tad seasick as it does tend to rock a little. The beaches in sousse are excellent though the waters can sometimes be a little choppy but not cold. if like us you would like to do some fising while you paddle there is a small shop in monastir where you can get your line, hooks and weights , beware tho if you are an animal lover or have a weak tummy ,as you have to go through a traditional market, which is not very pleasant but an experence if you would like to see how tunisians shop.
Above all this Sousse and Tunisia are well worth visiting ,a place where we shall definately be visiting again. Enjoy your stay as we did

The resort does not cater for English people. Only for Germans and Russians and polish. Would go further North say to "port-El-Kantaoui" which has far better Hotels and not as expensive for the use of beds for the beach etc.

The beach was clean and well maintained, however the sea was too seaweedy and full of debris for my liking - but you can't hold that against anyone.
Skanes is really just a strip of hotels along a beach, although it does give easy access to Monastir or Sousse with fairly cheap taxi prices
Entertainment rubbish - but hey, you don't have to bother with it as it is away from the main hotel

there is the stark realisation that this is a very poor country and yes the taxi drivers do chase you and your small child down the street for a fare and yes everyone does try to pull at you to get some sort of business, but i would honestly say that while this is of course daunting, its really not meant malicously - its just that they desperately need the incoming money from tourists. I was, like everyone else i spoke to in my week there a bit tired of constantly tipping every little thing, from the second i arrived to the second we left but it does make you realise how fortunate you are in comparison. It seems the tourist does get ripped off several times over in that respect in tunisia but it is up to the individual. Seeing a donkey tied to a tree next to a main busy road by its leg in the hot sun with no food or water and moaning a lot was also a bit unplasant.Guess were not used to seeing such inhumane things back home. i think if you were genuinely prepared for all of this and left the kids at home and could live on rice and salad and be prepared to seek your evening entertainment out far and wide outwith the hotel then maybe, just maybe you would enjoy it more.I do want to state how hard the waiters and the hotel entertainers work to try to ensure everyones happy, guess just wasnt for me. my son loved sam and i found adele and lolita to be really helpful. An experience. Not necessarily a really bad one - except the food, just an experince (",)

Dining out is expensive, booze is expensive and there is a lack of entertainment. Everyone wants a tip and do their best to rip you off, if you are a tourist. Be very carefull. Girlfriend is blonde and got haressed everywhere we went, so be warned!! This is a muslim country and women are treated with disrepect - in general I hasten to add - some nice people about!!

Much like the hotel, the cleanliness around the pool was excellent, you did have to pay for sun loungers but it was only 50p which was reasonable.
The food around the pool is lovely and the waiter was great fun and would get naything and everything for you - again nothing was too much trouble!
The beach is 2mins away, literally follow the path from the hotel and you are there! It is clean, and the food is excellent - again we were waited on!
Do watch out for the beach touts who will try and sell you everything and anything, but its all harmless - so dont be nasty!
The entertainment was ok, but was a bit tedious! We made friends with the entertainers and they were a laugh! We took part in some of the events but it finished about 1030, there wasnt much do after that so i wouldnt recommend it for younger couples! you can use any of the pools as there are 3 hotels on the complex, and this goes for the hotels facilities and entertaiment! The pool to the Marhaba Club is not as appealing as the the Marahaba Hotel, however its quiet and you virtually have it to yourself!
Definitely recommended is the pirate ship ride, three hours for £12.50 which incleds a bbq, ulimited soft drinks and you the ship anchors up in the sea where you can dive in - great value (would definitely do it again). Also worth a look is the man made town of Port El Kantoui, set around a harbour with numerous cafes and shops - you can also take a 'yellow' submarine ride, something which i would definitely do when i go again! the water park is good fun and ok value, £5.50 for all day! Its not massive but has some good slides, and for the money cannot complain. We went in September so there was hardly anyone there, but im sure in peak season it would get busy and it is quite small!
Sousse has a lovely feel, and is set around a medina which you can go in! I think it cost us £2.50, but it tells you about its history and is quite interesting! You can also see all over Sousse and see what it is really like for the locals to live there!
One thing you must remember when entering into Sousse and Tunisia is that it is a Muslim country so women do cover up! However I wore shorts and skirts out and it was fine! I dont think they aprove of men walking about with tops off or women walking around in bikinis outside the resort! If you are femake and have blonde hair, men do tend to take a liking to you - again its harmless and should take it as a compliment but it does get annoying!
Overall Sousse was a lovely holiday, relaxtion met with fun and exploration of the history of the city! People were friendly and we did find that small tips do get you a long way!
Definitely recommended, and we have booked to go for next year but in July!
