Thats exactly where we were!! We even asked a couple of people, a barman & a man doing a demonstration & they both told us no smoking anywhere. We didn't see any ashtrays or anyone else smoking either, I did think it was strange, as in April this year there were ashtrays in a couple of the bars at least.

How strange! Perhaps I stumbled across some secret smoking area!

Hi folks - just heard from a friend in Cala Bona that there are a few jelly fish in evidence now. They were expected a bit earlier than this but were obviously a bit slow swimming in! Have any of the returning correspondents experienced them or did you stick mostly to the pools?

Wish we had found that secret place :D!! We heard about jellyfish, but we tend to stick round the pool, although friends we went with are still there & went to the beach yesterday, I have been in contact with her & she hasn't mentioned seeing any - she had her vinegar in her bag just in case!

We didn't go in the sea at Cala Bona, we went in further up at Cala Millor and didn't see any jellyfish.

The biggest problem we encountered which sent us back to the pool was all the weed, last week tons of the stuff swept up.

Yes the weed does tend to be a problem particularly on the small beach just in front of Beach Boys bar - I don't know how Sue and Lian put up with pong sometimes!
The other dodgy bit is the beach in Cala Bona next to the Levante, but they tend to keep that fairly clear during the season - it seems to get worse as the seas rough up a bit.
I suppose the jelly fish got tangled up in the sea weed lol.

Is the guy on the beach (near Levante) always there building the sand sculptures? I thought he was quite rude to people at times.

The hippy looking one with his superslim girlfriend?
This is the first year I have seen him - there are usually some up the other end of Cala Millor beach by the medical centre.

Yeah they are the ones. He was quite rude to a little lad that happened to walk near the sculptures. I thought for pete's sake, its a public beach. I was damned if I was giving them any of my hard earned cash to fund their travels!

We went though Palma airport in August at the height of the security scares and my husband found a bar near the fast food outlet that allowed smoking, which was a godsend for him as we had a 3 hour dela  y.

Smoking is still allowed in most bars in Magaluf. There is a lot of confusion between Spanish law and Balearic law, however one bit that seems to be being applied in tourist areas at least is that bars under 100 sq metres (1000 sq feet) can declare themselves smoking bars - so most have!

Smoking everywhere was one of the downsides to our holiday. We don't smoke ourselves and have an 8 month old daughter, it seems like we were the only people in the whole of Majorca that didn't smoke. Everytime we went somewhere for dinner I was forced to eat my dinner whilst inhaling someone elses smoke

Pooks, I don't smoke eitherand nor do any of my family. Not praising the situation - just advising on it!

I hope you don't mind me popping in here, but I would love someone to answer me regarding the following . please.

I married my second husband in April 1981 and we have celebrated our silver wedding this year.
A few months later we went on a late "honeymoon" with my son from my previous marriage to Calas de Mallorca"¦"¦this was the first time my hubby had been abroad.
We stayed in the Hotel Canarios, which was at that time, sister hotel to the hotels Chihuah/ Mastines"¦I don't think they had been built all that long, but could be wrong  If I remember rightly, there were no other hotels of that size, burger kings or whatever.

The hotels Mastines and Chihuah stood side by side on the headland, but the hotel Canarios was quite a way from the beach, with absolutely nothing around it and separated by a deep gorge, which forced you to walk quite a considerable way around"¦down a road with no lights that we named "triphid lane" because my son was scared to death of the noises we heard walking back late at night.
There was a hotel courtesy bus that was suppose to run every hour and invariably the driver never appeared after siesta, which meant the long trek back during the afternoon heat.

On the long walk down to the beach there were a couple of bars and then nothing until you got quite near and then there was a kind of square on the left with shops .you walked down some steps to the small cove/beach.

Has it changed much in 25 years.? Just interested because we were talking about this the other day and here seems a good place to ask.
I now believe that the Hotel Canarios is called Canarios Park and is A1.

Hi Everyone

Just returned yesterday from Cala Bona. Was expecting a mixture of pleasant weather and rain but it was mostly quite hot (it rained for half hour on Thursday). There were plenty of people around during the day but the English bars (with the exception of the harbour area) were very quiet at night. Stayed in an apartment but found if we bought drinks in the bar, we were welcome to use the hotel pools (mabe because it was fairly quiet) and managed a swim everyday although the pools were cold when you first went in (lovely after your first few strokes). I would say you need a cardigan for night time, by about 10.30 I was beginning to feel a bit cool.

Just a word of warning for smokers - when I went through Palma airport in July, there were ashtrays in the bar half way towards baggage reclaim, this time there were no ashtrays and no smoking signs were up (although a few people still lit up)

Anyway had a lovely time - next year just seems such a long way off!

Ps Sorry I can't help with your question Sanji - have never been as far down as Calas de Mallorca

Hiya Chris.
When you say "we stayed there" do you mean the resort or in the hotel Canarios.?

If it's not changed, then I for one will be very pleased, I hate to see a place lose the Spanish identity and become over commercialised, but that's just me, however, I can sympathise with the October scenario.
We loved the holiday so much that we returned the following year, only we returned with a baby and in October.....thinking the temperature would be more suitable for a baby.

Between one year and the next, the hotel Canarios had been sold to a new group and split from the sister hotels Mastines/Chihuah.
Whilst the accommodation and the resort were fine, the food being served in the hotel was atrocious and being presented with an orange for a baby to eat for dessert, was stretching the imagination somewhat but it was obvious that the hotel was winding down and that was something (at that time) we never took into consideration....but most certainly would in future.

Calas de Mallorca still has a special place in our hearts, I (we) must make the effort to go back someday.

Thankyou for your replies.
