I'm sure del949 and I (and probably quite a few other people) would be really interested in hearing from someone who knows what the effects will be rather than just offering speculation.
If it was from a reputable source, I'm sure that it wouldn't be seen as scare-mongering.

I must have misunderstood. I thought that you meant the experts had discussed the RP situation.
Sorry yes, they predicted the erosion that exists today and the scattering of debris which will happen in the future.

If anyone is interested as to what's in store for Goa if the decision to scrap it in place is taken, just Google "Indian Shipbreakers" and prepare to say a prayer for all the surrounding beaches if ever it goes ahead.
The only thing that may save it happening is that she did'nt run aground at high tide so any attempt to cut her up there would be difficult. As well, the current depressd state of the scrap steel market would make it uneconomic at this time. I expect the next tender will fail, the same as all the rest, and she'll be left there to let the monsoons to slowly break her up over many years, as a testament to all that's wrong with all levels of Goverment in Goa.

All shipbreaking, such as up the coast at Alang, involves firstly running the ship ashore at the highest tide, allowing maximum time for scrapping of the vessel. In this case the ship is far below the highwater mark so the time for operations is limited severely. A roadway will have to be made for heavy trucks to gain access right down to the site. Anyone who thinks this can be done without massive damage to the beach, and it's surroundings is living in fantasy land. Also it will be impossible to do most of the scrapping during the rough seas of the monsoon, so all this operation will be mounted during the tourist season. When all this sinks in, I expect the protests and whatnot will start, consequently, I would imagine we'will have the old girl sitting there for a long time yet. It will be interesting to see the position taken by the esteemed Tourism Minister, I'm not sure how burning up and scrapping ships on the Cadolim beach, fits in with his image of Goa as an upmarket destination for five star tourists.

I agree with what you are saying.... I used to live near a ship breaking yard.
If this starts after the monsoon this year it will bring chaos to Candolim. Why would any holidaymaker want to book a 4/5 star holiday in Candolim with all this nonsense happening? I wouldn't be booking a holiday next year at Taj Village or the like.
If this starts in Oct/Nov along with late shack opening.... more doom and gloom.
Fiddling while Rome burns I'm afraid.

Very interesting. Doesn't bear thinking about it.
Even though these teams take 2 months to dismantle a ship, imagine the destruction to the surrounding area and chaos during and after. And this isn't a tourist area. Bet they don't clean their mess up either.
It's probably inevitable that this is the way they will do the job. I imagine it will take Sinquerim a long time to recover if this goes ahead. Very sad.

                Terrific read that.
I do not want to sound callous or uncaring in any way but it seems to me they now just have to get this done.
It is going to be messy and cause major disruption but whatever solution they came to that would be the case.
They just have to get the pros in and get it done. Then clean up as best they can and start to rebuild.

They are "making it clear there should be no damage to the beach" - bit late I'd say.
I shall miss the "old girl" if they do manage to find some "pro's" to do the job - thought previous attempts were carried out by "pro's"

Well all I can do is wish them the best of luck and hope that they achieve this mammoth task with minimal further destruction and upheaval.
Farewell "old girl".............or is it?

I guess the situation is getting rather critical now, if it was to break up during the monsoon, it would cause a lot more damage than workers cutting it up would. Obviously trying to make it sea worthy enough to tow it is the ideal the scenario but they dont seem prepared to put the money up for it!

And still the nonsense and misinformation goes on. In fact NO reputable salvor was ever contracted to tow her off, in the early days it would have been a simple task. Now when the only course of action remaining is to scrap on site, you have the Calangute MLA, A Fernadez, coming away with conspiracy theories, and nonsencical statements that it would only cost 3-4 Crores to tow her away. With attitudes like that it will be no surprise if in fact nothing ever gets done, the monsoons over the years will slowly break her up, and the surrounding beaches will bear the scars for evermore.
