Alan, interesting to hear about the ship breaking company - I really shouldn't be surprised by your findings. The position of the RP certainly complicates the ship breaking process and whilst I've no knowledge of ship breaking, my engineering background makes me sceptical of the job being completed before the onset of the next monsoon.
Given that the lowest bidder was chosen for the job it would be interesting to see details of the technical bid to see if there are any obvious shortcomings in the bid. Given the state of governance in Goa it's hard to imagine there aren't any.
Steve
Interesting link, thanks, gooner fan.
I'd be interested to hear what you engineers think of the method they propose to use, it says in the article that they've handled bigger ships than the RP - but doesn't mention if those had been in situ for 10 years.

They can certainly talk the talk. The most recent ship mentioned, the Ocean Seraya, went on to the rocks at the entrance to Karwar in Karnataka and broke her back, so she was a different salvage problen as she had'nt sunk about 12 feet ino the sand as has the Princess. In that case the Dutch savage company Smitt removed all the fuel oil, bunkers etc, and then, presumedly, left the cutting up to Arihant. A worrying factor is it's staff from Alang that's being called in to do the job, and pristene beaches dont figure prominatley in their remit,as can be seen if anyone cares to Google Alang Shipbreakers. I've no doubt they'll have a good go at it, but doubt very much ih they can remove the ship in the time frame given. Pollution is another matter and I fear thats where the immediate problem will arise. The next few months will be very interesting to see how it all pans out, but I fear it's come years too late for saving Sinquerm beach.

well heres a surprise, the mining company is going back to the court again !

Also the company who's got the contract, it now appears that they need access to the beach, so it seems my concerns re further pollution and damage to the beach was well founded.

Surprise surprise - the government is also talking about further representations to the court...
Seems they now say they can't get the work done in accordance with the agreed schedule - not surprising perhaps as they still haven't issued the order for the work to commence.
The newly announced requirement for beach access may well lead to further challenges and delays one suspects.
As for the engineering efficacy of the proposed method of removing the RP - it sounds reasonable enough but the details published in the press are too generalised to give any real indications. The devil will be in the detail of how the wreck is to be accessed, deploying of lifting gear, controlling pollution and disturbance to the waters around - there's plenty of scope for problems if things are not planned and executed properly.

Why has it taken so long to realise this issue about customs duty though?
Monty Python could have made a good sketch about this nonsense. The scrap value is much less than expected as most of what remaind is rust, which has no scrap value, although perhaps the Indian Customs has a special tax rate for rust somewhere on their list. The clock ticks on and any faint chance of the scrapping being concluded as per the contract, before the next monsoon, gets more and more unlikely. I stood on Sinquerm beach last week and if you line yourself up in the right spot you can see right through the hull at the waterline to the other side. It's only a matter of time before some lunatic watersports operater offers speedboat trips right throug the gap ( another person killed yesterday at Calangute by a banana boat) so the thought's not as stupid as it sounds.

That's shocking - although I'm not surprised as there is just NO attempt to keep boats/jetskis and people segregated.
I couldn't believe that people were swimming in the sea with boats zipping past them so closely.
Sorry
Well , PPC , I for one , after what I saw and was told at the Calangute fish market this morning , wont be venturing into the sea -- Local fisherman caught a 14ft Tiger Shark , 200m off the coast at candolim , near to the River Princess ,last night. The rumour is that they are feeding off the fish that are using the RP as a natural reef .
As for the shark , it was a big big fish , a shame to see it lying on the slab , it was sold to one of the big hotels .
I cant remember if the Tiger Shark attacks humans , but it looked a dangerous creature.

Wow!
Just googled 'Tiger shark' and it does say they attack humans.
"While the tiger shark is considered to be one of the sharks most dangerous to humans, the attack rate is surprisingly low according to researchers. The tiger is second on the list of number of recorded attacks on humans, with the great white shark being first. They often visit shallow reefs, harbours and canals, creating the potential for encounter with humans.
Tiger sharks are considered a near threatened species due to excessive finning and fishing by humans."
On a similar subject, we used to see dolphins in that area but this year sadly we didn't.
Are these sharks following me around, firstly we were there with the sharks in Egypt now going to GOA and the beautiful species are also around

Most of the restaurants are selling Baby Shark now. These things are only 12 inch long miniatures, you can see them displayed in some places. If they continue to catch them at this size there will be none left to breed in the future. Don't order it and you might help.
I don't want to start a nasty rumor but......THEY HAVE STARTED TO GET WORKERS FROM GUJURAT........TO.....WAIT FOR IT........REMOVE THE SHIP!!!!!
A number of workers arrived on Thursday and are staying in our guesthouse and they are organising dormitary accomodation for an expected 300 workers.
OK? Watch this space....

Just been on TA and this link (16) mentions shacks being removed to make room for a road.

Yes this access road was mentioned in their tender. As if the roads are'nt bad enough at present, without large orange trucks running up and down through Candolim. I fear the mess thats about to start all around this area is going to surprise a lot of people, not least the local residents of Candolim. I wiould'nt be surprised if it becomes quite a carry on as I'm sure the disruption and pollution is going to be far worse and be more widespread that most people expect
