Normal roaming will work when in port, make sure you have that enabled.
Be carefull of connecting to any ship mobile cells it can cost a fortune, not sure if the destiny has one but if berthed next to a big US ship they will and sometimes leave them on so check which operator you are using localy or do network setup.

The ships phone will be expensive.
It'll be short 2 minute calls in the evening so shouldn't spend too much - thanks
Best not to phone during the parties.
Just been messaging a member of the entertainment team on board the Destiny and they have checked the card situation for me. Maestro cards are definately not accepted but credit cards and visa debit cards are accepted.
Hope this clears it up for everyone, I would like to thank Rachie B otherwise i would have just gone with my maestro card!!!
4 weeks on sunday!!!!!
Glad you got a straight answer !
Confirms what we already thought. Just a pity Thomsons head office staff dont know this. Thanks
Have a Great time, bet your counting down the days now!!
i cant wait to go in July!! seems so long away!
Anyone having a cruise and stay Dom Rep/ Destiny next month. We are going from gatwick on 6 April for 2 weeks. Not been on destiny before but have been on Ocean Village in the Med last summer. A bit concerned because we have heard a few bad reports about Destiny (food, entertainment and size of cabins). We have got one of the cabins with a balcony (only a small number on the ship I understand). We have also heard that there is a $10 arrival tax and $20 departure tax. As we are going in and out of Dom Rep twice does that mean double the tax?
If you are on a cruise and stay you have to pay taxes both entry and exit but only once each. If you are on cruise only then classed in transit therefore you do not have to pay.
yes the cabins are small but you aren't in them much ?!they were kept very clean with plenty of towels and hot shower
Didn't really go in for all the entertainment
preferring to sit in Blakes or the Sky bar with a cocktail of an evening
other people said the shows etc were good though ?
thing is people will always find something to whinge about ! <sigh> and i think they go on these cheaper cruises expecting 5* luxury!
Check the cost of international calls with your provider before you go so that you do not have any nasty surprises on your bill when you return.
You should be cheaper getting an international calling card and using a pay phone while in port.

Thanks to everyone who replied - very useful info.
Also, in the Thomson brochure the itinerary states Corsica and Palamos as the last 2 destinations before Palma however the cruise description talks about Sardinia and Menorca - any idea which is right?
We tended to use the seven seas restaurant for evening meals as it was nice to get the waiter service and the waiters sometimes put on entertainment in the restaurant too -they are really nice and can't do enough for you. Most of the same food is available in the Lido but it's self service and can be a bit crowded and you always seem to be up and down getting things - but thats just a personal preference. We always used the Lido at lunch though as you could just throw a sarong around you and walk up from the pool when you felt peckish instead of having to make a bit more of an effort to go to the Seven Seas in the middle of the day.
Regarding the cruise Itinerary, I know it changes from week to week so those travelling on board for 2 weeks don't visit the same destinations twice. Have you tried looking on Thomsons website for the cruise Itinerary for your travel dates as that is most likely to be correct. Or email Thomson customer services for clarification. Hope you have a nice time anyway
We did the Destiny last Jul 08. Had a ball. Enjoyed it that much we are doing a 2 week back to back on the Destiny, 30th Jul 09. Fantastic.
Seven Seas - Dressy Occasion for evening meal - The Captains Night - Lots of gents wearing Tux's and ladies wearing Frocks. I always wore Trousers and Shirt and on Captains Night stuck a Tie on. Wife always wore nice skirts and tops etc etc. Daughter wore much the same. So not too over dressy. Although no Jeans at night in Seven Seas.
Seven Seas - Do a great Breakfast and lunch - You can wear your shorts for these 2 sittings
Lido Restaurant - Open 24 hrs. You can wear what you want. Great curry and chip at 3am on the way back from the pub to the cabin. lol
Grill Bar - Up beside the pool. Open 10am to 5pm ish. Wear what you want.
Not sure about the destinations. As Kimi said you would be best to email Thompson to varify destinations. Cant even remember my destinations. But whatever port I wake up to, im sure ill enjoy it anyway.
Have fun
