It's third world, and that is what we already knew, but we could live with it for two weeks.
Entertainment very poor, unless you want to sit in a bar all evening.
Beach is quite littered, and the shack sun loungers are pretty grim (so take your own towel)
This was out fifth visit, and we think we have done all we need there.

Calangute is a very busy resort not the place for a peaceful holiday. There were cows and stray dogs roaming round but for me thats what i had expected.Iloved every minute of it.Just go with an open mind and dont expect the med and you will love it.Everything is so cheap.

what you see is what you get,we arrived in goa for the first time in jan and didnt know what to expect, yes it is dirty, rubbish all over but look past that and what you see is a beautiful place,go with an open mind it is after all a third world country, the bus ride from the airport itself is an adventure,im sure our driver had two gears, stop ad go fast, i loved walking down calangutes main street loads of shops, resturants( we ate at anans a lot a place where locals went just at the top of the street in calangute , turn left to baga and right to candolim) ,bars etc, the road is extreamly busy so be carefull of cars, trucks and bikes, people are very friendly,do be carefull if you fancy a coconut drink from a street seller, my hubby got quite ill after having one, there is a lot of red dirt/sand all over and it stains, so ladies be carefull if you want to wear white skirts/trousers and shoes, the beach at calangute is busy, and from the moment you walk on the do get hasseld to buy things, but its nice and when the locals come down at weekend its even busier, beach shacks are too many to mention as such,we went to goan waves they were very friendly and helpfull, if you didnt wat to be hasseled with the beach sellers they told tem to stay away, no charge for sun bed just buy a drink and you can stay there all day, walked to baga beach too, nice walk it you dont want to be asked to go into a shack walk in the sea, baga was a bit quieter than calangute, and the beach did seam cleaner, the food at the last shack as you walk from calangute was amazing(larios i think )you go a lot for your money and the guys were very helpfull,
the night entertainment was what you may expect, no brilliant but nice to watch,we only saw it at our hotel, if you wanted more like disco etc there were easy to find and taxi drivers would take you to them, on the whole a nice place felt very safe at night, we stayed on the beach till 3am on night and walked back to our hotel it was so nice atotaly different place,
i do recomend east meets west for meal, and kim far chinese, both at baga, the capricorn and anans in calangute(anans is where locals go and is realy cheap 12orps for a meal and drink,) if you cant spend you money ladied head to the sops that sell bags, you will find designer handbags(genuine indian fake of course) very well made, and cant find the colour you want just ask and they will make it for you,
only thing left to say is go for your self and see, if you do and its your first time,(dont buy anything for the first couple of days, then get haggling, they love it) take it as you see it, its not for everyone but look past the dirt ect and you will see what i mean,

We have visited Calangute several times but find that it is getting too commercialised for us.

Resort Cleanliness, thats an odd one, this is India. Mantheven is situated in Sth Calangute next to Little Italy Restaurant, which is ideal, its very quiet but walk just around the corner and you're back on busy Holiday St with its restaurants and bars, and a 5 minute walk brings to possibly the best part of Calangute/Candolim beach, quieter and cleaner than both of them.

Calungute is becoming increasingly busier and the sun beds are getting closer and closer this area will soon be an extension of Baga - you wont see me there then!!
This area is the quieter Candolim area that I have been visiting for the last 12 years but not for much longer I'm afraid - the shame is its tourism thats spoiling it.

Calangute is ok a bit dirty but hey it's India, and it's mystique and charms make up for it, Candolim is a litte quieter, but the road in Calangute can be a bit too much, the airhorns on the truck scare the living daylights out of you if your close by.Watch for Kamikazee motorcyclists too.
Damn, I wish I was back there instead of in the grey rainy place. Goa is lovely.
And tourists come on spare a few rupees for the beggars !
(I know this is not recommended in the rest of India but in Goa you will not get a crowd of 100 people diving on to you)
I feel it's the right thing to do, the locals do it too so why not, 10 rupees makes a BIG difference to someones day.
