Calungute is a real mess. It is the most filthy disgusting place we have ever visited. If you don't mind slumming it you will have a great time. We did, we just won't do it again. If you have any problems with walking forget it, if it wasnt as hot I would have my walking boots on for protection. The food was excellent and cheap too, other than that there is little for us to recommend from our stay. J&A Italian restaurant at Baga river was one of our highlights, amazing food and service. Candolim beach shacks were horrendous and we were very pleased to leave that beach. Captains Cabin in Baga looked after us best with "clean" toilets, great food/drink and lots of banter. Not being able to swim on any beach was dissapointing, other than Cola beach though this was limited. Four people died drowing in the first week we were there.

well the resort is not at all clean it seems as tho they not to keen on cleaning up for the tourist , and okay it is cheap you get the local bar , and fiesta bar also alex's bar all well cheap and well great fun i suppose when you think where can you get a 650ml budweiser for 55 pence , and a 1/4 bottle of vodka for 40 ruppees okay it is romanov local vodka well freinds of ours cant tell the differnt from smirnoff , as for the beach it is still nice veiw allthought their is probally 30 ski jets now near the calungutne steps my advice is to walk towards candolim and find a more quiter shack we go into the ritz and most have been going for around 14 yrs so it is good and well freindly and if you cant get in try next door gregs he is good , it must be good as we are returning in april 2008 so if your in the ritz look out for us

It would seem Calangute is THE touristy resort in the area - perhaps more suitable for younger families with children who want everything on their doorstep much like a typical european holiday to spain or greece. It was very noisy ( but given half of india seemed to travel downt o goa for new year this was to be expected!!) but a pair of ear plugs soon sort that out! The local beach is not of the best quality - better to take a taxi north to the gorgeous arambol for a more relaxing (less tourist central) experience of goa - although we did find a favourite spot and visited there for much of our first week, the staff at (i think petes beach house?!) were absolutely amazing, another problem i found was that because of the tourist nature of the area a lot of women were very disrespectful to local behavious and were sunbathing topless on the beach, this of course meant that you were (topless or not) constantly being looked at by groups of men - some of whom even attempt to take pictures of these women. I would suggest keep the tops on, or at least save it for a trip to majorca rather than india then perhaps the entire female population of the beach wouldn't be bothered as much.
There was also plenty going on around the area - very lively in terms of bars and clubs because of goas lax drinking laws in india - so good for young people visiting but also some amazing restaurants to sample.
All in all an amazing place!

Calangut is a place you either love or hate, nothing in between. How can you not love a place like this,it's brilliant.Lovely people, great beach snack bars, fab food, cheap as chips beer, fantastic weather (wall to wall sunshine)and beaches to lose yourself on.Having said all that it is of course still 3rd world and that needs to be taken into consideration. It's a long way to go,but wprth the effort.

14 times in Calangute now, we still love the place but it's changing too much. Getting very popular and busy now and a lot of building work going on. The area we stay in around Holiday street is still the best place to be. If you want all the noise and bustle go to Baga.

We always go to Baga Beach and there is always something going on - the beach is always busy and colourful with few beach sellers and fruit ladies passing by. You can buy good food/drinks from the numerous beach shacks and they are open 24/7 - at night there is usually something going on - bbq, music, fireworks.
Most shacks have a masseuse working there so you can get a good massage at a great price.
The sea is quiet rough so not advisable to let small children go in on their own - it has a very strong under current and there are no life guards. Be careful if not a strong swimmer and don't let the little ones out of your sight near the water.
The Baga beach itself is sandy and the various shacks try to keep it clean by clearing all rubbish at end of every day - most shacks do not charge for beds if drinks or food is purchased.
If you want a quieter more relaxing time down the beach go to the far end of Baga or quieter still to Candolim - lovely here with beds spread out and the very odd seller coming past - again you can usually get a massage and believe me its heaven on Candolim beach as its quieter - you really do relax - again good food/drinks at the shacks (im sure its a little cheaper this end!!)
We go all over to different bars/restaurants there are great places in Candolim, Calangute and Baga - always good to go on recommendations. Personally I think there is enough choice for everyone - kids of all ages seem to be welcome anywhere - the Goan people are very warm and welcoming - I took my niece when she was 13 and she was made such a fuss of she loved it and is coming back with me in Jan 08 (age 18)
In all resorts there are stall/shops along the road side - you can find some good bargains but be prepared to bargain.
There is very little street lighting and pavements so always advisable to carry a small torch incase your hotel is off the main road. They drive like nutters so always keep your wits about you especially at night. If you have one too many jump a taxi.
All resorts cater for all ages and you tend to find that a lot of the older brits stay for 2/3/4 months and like me you get a lot of repeat travelers - you either love it or hate it! Best advice is to embrace it and dont judge too quickly - its not the usual spain or greece
Enjoy!

The resort is not to bad.
lots of tat shops but thats what some people go for.
Restraunts are great such a choice.
Tours are so well done every thing runs like clockwork.
This is the best value for money holiday we have had and we have traveled quite a lot.
The beaches are great one day we were the only two people on the beach so we had a private butler and servants for the day,the food at the beach shacks is great cooked fresh and always served with a smile.
Stopped several times by police looking to fine you for various things but even this is done with a smile.

The resort was not to bad for rubbish, we noticed a garbage collection every morning at the hotel. There are plenty of places around the area to keep you entertained. The beach was kept fairly clean and yes we would definately stay in the area again.
