We had heard quite a lot of bad things about Tunisia before we left which worried us but Port el Kantaoui was brilliant!

There are many restaurants to choose from which offer a wide selection of food. The streets are very clean and the main port area was beautiful with fountains and lots of shops.

The local people are very friendly. They do try to get you into their shops and restaurants but they will accept 'no' for an answer. We certainly got into our haggling as well, the locals expect it and so it becomes a lot of fun and you can get some great bargains on leather and jewellery.

The beach was very clean and the water warm and clear. Loungers and umbrellas were a plenty and there were lots of places to eat and drink as well. With regards to entertainment I would not recommend it if you are looking to go clubbing every night.

There are certainly plenty of places to drink until the early hours and many of the hotels have music and entertainment of some sort most nights.

We fell in love with Tunisia and will definitely be returning.

The resort is really clean, there are people working all day every day cleaning. There are loads of boat trips out doing all different kinds of things, loads of little shops but they all sell much the same. Most hotels have their own bit of beach which they keep tidy. The resort beach is lovely but not as clean.

Once you have seen Port El Kantoui for the 3rd or 4th time and visited the shops, (which are all the same) you really wonder how you will be able to put in 2 weeks holiday.

We found two good restaurants. Le Mediterranean in the marina, and Le Daurade also in the marina. Le Mediterranean was excellent for decor and service but the meal was mediocre. While Le Daurade was on the marina front (we ate outside) we found the staff to be excellent, the menu exciting, the food delicious and the cost was extraordinary reasonable. It was our last night of our honeymoon and was the perfect end to an 'endured' holiday.

Port El Kantoui was built in 1979 and is specifically a tourist spot. To be frank, it felt more like a tourist trap or prison. We were constantly bombarded with 'touts' entreating us to visit their 'all the same' shops. There was little banter and at times it became edging on intimidating.

Constantly, no matter what we did, or had done for us, it reached the point where we expected people to put their hands out for dinars. (tips). Even asking someone to take our picture or to take theirs cost us money.

The country is in severe danger (in my opinion) of destroying its own tourism (which apparently accounts for 30% of the countries national income) by pushing away tourists through trying to exploit them by ridding them of as much money as possible while they are there. No harm in that I guess, but there are ways to do it, and Tunisia hasn't mastered the art of making their tourists smile and feel happy to give. We constantly felt trapped, exploited, ripped off and that we were afraid to try, do anything after a few days.

We went on trips arranged by our tour operator which left my wife disgusted re toilet facilities etc. The country has little to offer and if you do go on trips, take, with a very large pinch of salt, the promises of a Turkish bath etc. What we envisage a Turkish Bath to be, turned out to be a 5 minute steam room with 60 women, men and children and no steam. Followed by a 30 second massage, a large lady rubbing a soapy lather over your back (which she wanted 2 Dinar + tips for doing - after being paid for the Turkish Bath).

If we had to do it again, we would go for 1 week (at most), find a good hotel (like the El Douradi) and stay in it (apart from visiting the restaurants I mention above) and putting our money in the water sports and lazing on the beach.

Other than this, Tunisia will be receiving a wide berth from us and we will be looking to places such as Turkey for a good holiday.

Sorry Tunisia - but this is how you left us feeling.

Resort was spotless, laid back entertainment, not for the clubbers.

Beach could be cleaner, saw a lot of rubbish when out snorkelling, sea weed left lying, so room for improvement here, but still a nice beach.

PEK was a lot quieter than expected, with not really that much to do in the evenings. I would say it's nice, quaint little place to do a bit of shopping and to have a spot of lunch and that's about it. If your looking for vibtant night life, the this is not the place!

Portel Kantoui was very clean a lovely cosmopolitan marina which really came to life at night although the shopkeepers around the marina were overpowering displaying Asda carrier bags and saying they were cheaper than Asda price they invited you to look and browse with no hassle - until you got in the shop that is ! Prices of goods varied drastically from shop to shop. There was a funfair near the marina which looked popular it was easy to book a boat trip at the marina at low cost much cheaper than tour company price. The restaurants around the marina were good with a good choice and reasonably priced. The beaches were clean and the sea was clear and shallow suitable for children. The taxi`s were cheap and lots of them around it was 3 Dinar from the hotel to the marina. I would visit this resort again as it proved better than I expected as when on the coach from the airport to the hotel Tunisia looked grim ! It would have to be a different hotel though !!

Pretty marina area surrounded by shops and restaurants, also musical, lighted fountains in the square edged with cafes and shops.
Locals do try to get you into cafes and shops but a polite " maybe later" or no thanks does the trick.Very polite, friendly people.
Taxis everywhere so no problem getting around.

Port el Kantaoui is very nice but you have to be careful of the shop keepers they will try and get you in their shops. Just to look round but what you have to remember is that this is their way of life so just ignore them an keep walking if you stop an start chatting you’ll end up in there unless you like haggling if you do you can get some bargains. I'm the voice of experience I've been back 4 years in a row an I'm going next year I love it

The marina at Port el kantaoui is absolutely beautiful with a good selection of shops and restaurants but be warned expect to be pestered relentlesly by the locals, who want to drag you into their place and wont take no for an answer.

Anyone with teenagers be careful as drug pushing is rife, my two lads went to the marina once and would not go back for the rest of the holiday as they felt really intimidated,
