No need to get jabs to visit Icmeler
John
I never bothered with any jabs when visiting or living in Turkey. However I do recommend one for small children and babies and I certainly had my son vaccinated for it when he was a few days old because we were travelling out very soon after his birth. Tuberculosis, TB for short. It is still quite common in Turkey (as it is becoming so in the UK these days too) and it is apparently the one disease that a baby will not automatically have immunity inherited from the mother when born...or so my midwife told me. When we flew out out when he was just a few weeks old, it was the only jab that he had been given.
When I asked at our doctors I was advised along with my husband and children to have dip, tet, polio, hep A and typhoid - for the adults this consisted of 2 injections, 1 in each arm. The children didn't have all the injections as they were still covered from their baby needles but they still needed to have an injection in each arm.
We had to go back a few months later to have our boosters and this now lasts us for 10 years. They don't hurt (honestly) and we didn't have to pay for any of them.
Funny how someone has just mentioned TB - this is a funny one because my daughter is due hers (last year it was due really) but the school nurses are not doing these anymore and I had heard that no one was going to be given this in the future unless they came into contact with someone that had already had it.
I checked this out at my local surgery and apparently its true - I was told .... please no one throw this back at me because I'm just saying it as I was told .... that TB is no longer a threat to society and the only people getting it are immigrants and people who had contact with the disease.
Many people have been shocked by this comment but honestly that is what I was told. It must be right because my daughter still hasn't had it .... and aint she pleased!!!

Anyone who lives in London and certain other areas where TB is prevalent will still be offered immunisation and I believe that it is still offered to newborns in certain parts of London. It is also still offered to anyone who has had a close relative who has suffered from the disease.
The official advice on TB can be found here: Anyone who lives in London and certain other areas where TB is prevalent will still be offered immunisation and I believe that it is still offered to newborns in certain parts of London. It is also still offered to anyone who has had a close relative who has suffered from the disease.
Sorry Briar! My original post was however directed at taking babies and young children to Turkey and in protecting them from what is still a prevalent disease in that country.
for Turkey..you do not need them..unless you are going to be living in an overcrowded house with poor facilities and people who are infected with the bacteria. ...if this is how you will be spending your holiday by all means get protected.
TB s only a problem where there are poor overcrowded living conditions with poor sanitation and nutrition...and people known to be at risk such as ex-miners with silicosis...people with Aids..and those with a lowered immune system
i speak from the experience of 25 years in community health in the uk....part of my job was to check upon known/old cases of TB and their families...i once had a case where a teacher was discovered to have active TB..her grandad was carrying the bacteria...and the school kids were then all tested ..none were infected.
enjoy your holiday ...

Me & my partner are seriously considering Turkey as a holiday this year after being to most of spain over the last few years. Heard various people saying that we'd need all sorts of vaccinations to cover us, being based in liverpool I called the tropical medicine travel centre who quoted various different jabs we'd need before travel costing over £100 each.....is this right? can anybody give us a clue??
last summer we went to Turkey for the first time. Also worried about the injections.
We went to our local GP and they checked where in Turkey we were going and injections were free, which reminds me we need to go back for a booster Hepititus now.
and may i remind people..kids here(Turkey ) have the same immunisation schedule as your children do in the uk ...and the take up rates for infant immunisation are probably better than the uk...
If you have your tetanus jab and polio(which now includes diptheria) no other jabs are needed for Turkey.
We are going to Turkey for the first time in September and we were wondering what vacines do we need if any. Our doctors recommend some just wondering if any body else has any other ideas.
We have been to Turkey many times and have never had injections. We just keep upto date with our Tetanus as we would for this country.
