We have never had any injections for Turkey. Whenever you read advice saying you need them, it is probably general advice, which is not necessarily applicable to the whole country. Turkey is such a huge country, and if you were going to the poor, undeveloped regions, where conditions - sanitation etc., may not be good, perhaps it is adviseable. However conditions in the tourist areas, where most of the people who would read this forum go, are very good, so the risks are very low.

hi all,
i'm a practice nurse and deal with this sort of thing daily we advise patients that they need to ensure that they have had a tetanus/diptheria in the last 10 years and hepatitis A. you should not have to pay for these as the surgery gets reimbursed on a monthly basis according to how many they do. if they do charge they can be done for fraud!! the only injections surgeries are allowed to charge for yellow fever rabies and hepatitis B (but if you have hepatitis A and hepatitis B together you don't have to pay) hope this helps

i am going to turkey for the first time in two weeks (yipee!),and have just been told i might need certain jabs before i go!.can anyone help me with this.

I've been to Turkey numerous times and have never subjected myself to jabs of any sort. Many years ago my doctor said if I intended going inland and doing any serious walking then maleria tablets etc would be required but for the normal tourist destinations jabs and maleria tablets weren't necessary. I have never had any problems at all and neither have any of my friends or family.

As a matter of interest Boys1958, whereabouts in Turkey are you heading?

if you're up to date with tetanus and polio..which you should have even in the UK..then you dont need more than that..the kids here are on the same vaccination programme as in the UK...they dont have anything extra..so that should tell you something.

most people only get ill through too much sun, alcohol and food. There are no injections for these!!! seriously though follow general hygiene rules here as anywhere else and you will be ok. Also get holiday insurance, you'll be amazed how many people don't!!!
Have a great time and enjoy

I have lived here for 9 years in Antalya and am still alive and well.

hi sacko, we had the jabs a few weeks ago, for most countries they do recommend them. but to be honest we had them just as a precaution, especially the baby because he wasn't up to date with his vaccination's.
the injections that we had were, hep a, typhoid, polio and tetanus. (excuses the spelling), for me and my partner, the kids had typhiod and hep a, when you have them, you are then covered for 10years.

Hi

Sacko - if it's any help, I've just rung our Doctor's surgery re: jabs and the sister there said that they work along the lines - if it's recommended then have it!!! She said that if it was just me and hubby going then it's up to us to decide, but as we are taking children she would definitely advise it.

Hep A, diptheria and tetanus.

Thanks for that - think I will err on the side of caution with the kids and have them done. I think I am trying to talk myself out of it as I hate needles and am a wimp really

Julie - Don't think I will tell mine. The youngest wouldn't understand anyway but the eldest would go mental too so think the best bet would be just to get them in there so there is no time to think about it - thats the plan in theory anyway!

I'm not saying that I am right, but I've been going on package holidays (including turkey and north africa) now for over 30 years, most places suggest a couple of immunisations, but i've never had any of them and been fine, just made sure that I have all the standard ones here, tetanus and the like.
