hi i live in Alanya and was a Health Visitor before coming here (now do the job for my neighbours) Turkish kids have exactly the same immunization programme as kids in the uk. so any kids up to date with their jabs there don't need boosters to come here. i've never had any jabs here and never been ill.
As for Malaria the mossies here are a nuisance but don't carry malaria. you can get an infected bite if you scratch too much or are allergic.
Typhoid fever is unlikely to be a problem in modern tourist places...and Turkey is certainly not third world as people who have visited here can say.
hi we have just been for our jabs and were told we only needed hep a and nothing else
Is it too late to get jabs when it is 7 wks., to holiday to Turkey? did'nt have time with work as yet to get them just wondering thank's from Claire.
I have two children aged 7 and 6 and we all had our jabs for turkey today. If you are upto date with your tetness ie if you had your baby one boost and one when your 14 years or above you are covered otherwise you will need one with your hepititus A jab. The jab is painless and has no side effects and if you have the booster after you come back from turkey it will cover you for a further 10 years worth it me thinks(yoda) in the long run if your returning.
I was at docs yesterday and he recommended that we all get our jabs just to be safe, (partner/son/me). Som got his me and partner are going at the end of the month.
Hi everyone, Can I just check which jabs you have all had? My doctor advised we only needed Typhoid but my friend who is travelling with us has been told only to have Hep A...we've all had the complete opposite jabs because the doctors in our town can't come up with the same recommendations!!! any advice????
We had Dip, Tet and polio in one arm.
Hepatitis A and Typhoid in the other.
My children only needed the Hepatitis A and Typhoid as they were covered by their baby injections for the rest.
The Children had to have injections in both arms because of their age as they couldn't have the combined injection like adults can.
Hope this helps. Go back to your doctors and request them all - better to be safe than sorry. We didn't have to pay for any of them so you shouldn't either.
We had the same vaccs as tinkerbell. Although Dr's can't charge for the vaccs themselves, some do not keep the vaccine in stock and will write a prescription which you have to pay for per item.
We were told to have jabs at least a month before travelling to Turkey. I jad Hep A and Typhoid (one injection) and also needed the Tetnas/polio/dyp booster. Hubby had Hep A/Typhoid but was up to date with the other. The kids ended up just having HepA as apparently that and the Typhoid are 2 seperate jabs for children and the nurse felt it more important to get the Hep A.

Vaccinations - are they necessary?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are vaccination certificates (Hepatitis, Polio, Rabies, Typhoid etc) required/compulsory for UK visitors?
Have any of you regular visitors ever experienced problems with the above infections?.

Hi Scouser,
Vaccinations are left entirely to your own discretion, they are not compulsory, I and my freinds and family have been going toTurkiye for about a dozen years now and have never had any injections and never had any problems other than the odd ear infections which has been put down to pools, + perforated ear drums etc.
But as i said it is entirely your decision on whether you have them or not, I do believe that you have to have them 2 or 3 weeks before going out there.
Hope this has helped........

Check with your Doctor, I and the wife plus kids all had the Typhoid, Hep A, Tetnus before going to Turkey 2 years ago, needed a booster last year, now covered for 10 years.
As Kevin said it is upto you in the end, but isn't it better to have piece of mind. I would also check whether your insurance would cover you if you catch the above and have not had the injections. All the above can be fatal, more details below, Check with your Doctor and follow their advice, injections in the UK are normally free.
All that said you will love Turkey.

HEP A?
Most people get better, symptoms can be severe, even deadly: high liver enzymes, high fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and telltale jaundice. Symptoms last 1 to 4 weeks.
Typhiod
Typhoid fever is a life-threatening illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. Persons with typhoid fever usually have a sustained fever as high as 103° to 104° F (39° to 40° C). They may also feel weak, or have stomach pains, headache, or loss of appetite. In some cases, patients have a rash of flat, rose-colored spots.
Tetnus
The incubation period from the time of the wound to the time of the symptoms is anywhere from a day to several months, with an average of about eight to nine days. Initially, individuals are very tired, irritable, have headaches, neck stiffness, and difficulty swallowing. Then comes the muscle rigidity and spasm, which you will have sustained contractions of muscles, specifically facial and jaw muscles, hence the term "lock jaw". The overall mortality rate is around 30%. In individuals over 60 years of age, it jumps to 50%.

we went to turkey in oct for 1st time. we opted for vaccinations my motto better to be safe than sorry.
myself and hubby had 1 jab which was hepatirex (not sure if spelt right) combination jab of hepatitus and typhoid. we also had to have polio drops as we hadn't had for a long time.
the kids both being under 15 had to have separate jabs for the same but they didn't need the polio drops.
going to have the boosters as going again this year.
these were reccomended by the doctors and i think for the prescription charge of £2.60 for adults only it is worth having for peace of mind.
ali
sorry
i forgot prescription charges different in uk

The vaccinations mentioned are not compulsory. (i.e the Turkish authorities will let you in if you have not had them) However for most holiday insurance policies, they will not cover you for any illness for which there is an advised vaccination which you did not take. IThis could lead to medical bills in the tens of thousands if you are unlucky enough to catch anything.
Its true that for the Tourist areas of Turkey there is very little chance of catching these diseases, but the majority of us do go on excursions, village trips and jeep safaris outside of resorts, where these illnesses are still in exsistance. At the end of the day the government doesn't collate and give out vaccination advices for no reason, and local resort hospitals abroad may not have the facilities we take for granted here.
The chances of you actually picking up a serious illness are minute, however you never can guarantee anything when it comes to illness and it has to be far better to be vaccinated, and not risk putting yourself or your children through a terrible (possibly life threatening) time whilst having no holiday insurance cover, than to put up with a couple of small injections and a stiff arm for an evening.

i had my jabs today , i had tetnus, polio + dip (these are combined in one injection now) in one arm and hep A in other arm, that what the nurse recommended as i had left it too long to build up any immunity to any other but she said these are ok.
I'm based in Ireland going to cost us 120eur EACH, if we want the jabs!!!!!
that's shocking!!!!!!
talk about rip-off ireland, there you go and it's free in the UK
makes you wonder!
you shouldn't have to pay for them, if we don't then neither should you, that is so wrong
120 flipping yoyos!
Add that to the 100eur baggage charge at the airport, plus to keep a car at Dublin airport for 2 weeks is 100eur and I haven't even left the country yet, lol
this could end up costing me more than Ibiza!
LMAO i can see what you mean, sorry to laugh but you make it sound hilarious
i had my jabs yesterday! hep A and typhoid. one in each arm, wan in agony for ages. and they cost me 6 quid each!! oh well im sure its worth it
you shouldn't have to pay for them should you, unless you're in ireland so i've heard, i read somewhere on this forum that you shouldn't have to pay for them, well i think that's what they said, i'll see if i can find the post and copy it here for you
You should get HepA polio & typhoid free at your gp surgery. If they try to charge you then call your local health authority.
I have found out that all gps should offer you these free as they are actually required to live in the UK.This is first hand info from my local health authority ( i got this from stefk)
stefk if your reading this can you back me up or am i wrong?
You should get a refund!!!
Hope this helps
P.s Don't know how to post quote from somebody else, if you can tell me that would be great xx
We were also told that they were only recommended and we had the same advice that has been posted before regarding the 6 month booster.
my gp told me only yesterday they didn't recommend any!!!
