Alvor Old Town is labyrinth of cobbled streets and the centre is virtually a traffic free zone. It has therefore retained most of its character with all the new developments on the outskirts of town and by the sandy beach which is about a mile from the centre. A lovely working fisherman's harbour which is interesting.
We were disappointed at the number of Irish bars all very much the same, many with live entertainment which differed from poor to good. It was therefore more lively than we envisaged or hoped. Also drinks were not particularly cheap in the bars. There is abundance of excellent restaurant most of which are reasonably price and eating out was a pleasure and very much a plus. We tried a variety of restaurants and can't name them all But and our top 5 were;
1. Restaurante O Alcaide. Down a side street in an old wine storehouse. Consequently it was small. The portions were massive and the food perfectly cooked. pretty essential to book beforehand as very popular.
2. Capacho restaurant. 300 metres from the taxi rank. the most formal and comfortable restaurant we visited. It was also air conditioned. Food well presented and the service is first class.
3. Rio Mar Restaurant. At the bottom end of the old town. Nice rooftop terrace tables candlelit. Wonderful food, good service and value.
4. Adega D'Alvo Marisqqueira Restaurant. Down the main cobbled street and located in an old winery with a nice enclosed terrace at the back which is not immediately obvious. The cuisine here is authentic and they use fresh product from the local market. we found this establishment atmospheric.
5. Hellmans seafood Restaurant. Down by the harbour front. Recommended for fresh fish which can work out quite pricey and you need to be carefulif on a tight budget.Great views of the harbour from the roof top terrace. If you enjoy fish must be tried once.

The resort of alvoris beautiful, it is let down with the roaming of stray dogs. Plenty of bars to visit irish ones very entertaining.
There are alot of nice restauraunts to choose from. the beach is very clean and tidy, I would say Alvor needs a crazy golf something for the kids there is nothing for them.
I would say Alvor is a resort for couples mainly.

The cobbled streets here are quaint and the centre itself still has most of the old buildings. Loads of restaurants to choose from in the evenings and enough bars from the quiet to live music but not rowdy. Beach wonderful. Best suited to couples requiring a middle of the road holiday- not too noisy, not too quiet.Shopping facilities limited.

Alvor old town still retains much of its originally character with cobbled streets and narrow alleys. The beach is long and sandy but is a little exposed on windy days. A great choice of restaurants and numerous Irish bars ( we wondered if there was anyone left in Dublin). The evenings can be lively without being rowdy as many bars have live "Pub entertainers", but not a place to come if you are "A Clubber".It is well worth spending a few hours down at the fishermans harbour which is fascinating. The outskirts especially to the west are built up with holiday homes are a some large unsighly hotels.

The resort was really lovely and the beaches were almost breathtaking. They are huge so there is plenty of room for everyone and the water is lovely with big waves. Great fun for kids and grown ups who still think they are kids!! There are plenty of restaurants and bars, although not too many. i didn't come across any night clubs but then I wasn't really looking. They did have plenty of karaoke bars etc... though.

The resort itself was about a 10 minute (downhill) walk. Loads of restraunts all of which had top class menues, some with slightly more variety than others, but all well staffed, properly cooked and simply delicious.
The main reason we didn't put on loads of weight because of the excellent food was the uphill walk back to the appartments and the two flights of stairs with a buggy.
Staff in bars and shops were really friendly, with excellent english. ATM users beware - the cash points regularly run out of money on friday evenings - thus necessitating a taxi trip to Portimao.
The beach is clean with many restraunts (slightly more expensive than the town) and if you're going bring loads and loads of water as the charge on the beach is astronomical!
Would possibly return to alvor - really enjoyed our stay!
Some excursions really worth going on were the trip to the Zoomarine and the Jeep Safari. Really enjoyed them.

Good standard of bars and places to eat in Alvor village and along the harbour front.
It was a friendly place where we were made to feel welcome and safe.
Beach areas lovely.
We really enjoyed our time in Portugal and have booked to return to the other end of the Algarve in 2006.

Alvor is a beautiful resort, quieter than albuferia but that suited us as we have young children. It is very family orientated with the main square pedestrians only so you never had to worry about the kids running ahead of you. All the restaurants were child friendly and had the usual kids menu although we did ask for smaller portions of the adults meal for the kids and they obliged no problem. You have to try Goodvilles the food is delicious.
The local harbour is entertaining for the kids especially when the boats come in and the kids can watch the fishermen bringing in the catch.
The beach one of the cleanest and nicest i have ever sunbathed on and so big that you are not walking over people to get to the sea.
I would definetly come back to Alvor and would recommend it as a excellent family holiday.

The centre of Alvor has retained its original charm but the outskirts are getting built up with large unsightly hotels. Lovely beach. Some excellent restaurant serving a variety of food. Beware if ordering fish as charged by weight which to our cost made the meal extremely expensive. A good selection of bars. worth taking the bus to Lagos for a day/evening. One of less commercialised resorts, ideal for us.

Alvor is also a great resort giving you best of both worlds ,charm of an old fishing village with great bars, shops and resturants.
Beach is great walk to the end and visit the endless coves some of which you can only get to when the tide is out.
We will be back fantastic
