Don't pay extra for a sea view as most rooms have a sea view or over-look the quiet pool. Restaurants/drinks in and around square expensive but there are a few bars and restaurants near the hotel circa half the price. Best, The Bagatelle.150m from hotel is the best. On the flat?

Good location but self catering is the way to go and there is a supermarket close by.

Upper floors of blocks 3, 4, or 5 seem to be the best located for views away from the main block 2 where rather reception, restaurants, bars and entertainment is held. We were on the 4th floor and were very satisfied apart from not being aware of the lack of hob and oven.
Boardwalks have been built by the hotels of the area giving easy access to the beach and beach side kiosks and restaurants. The best beach restaurant we found was Os Salgados, a seafood restaurant.
One at the other end of the beach was far less agreeable with ambience, food and service. Walking beyond Os Salgados on boardwalks are views of a river/ lagoon where you can see fish, water birds and terrapins. Not too far from Albufeira for more restaurants and shops.

Brilliant hotel located very close to the square, where you will find a large number of restaurants and bars.

Beaches
Our resort was called Sao Joao (or something like that) and we were unsure if the complex would be among the bars etc. but it was at the back of 'the strip' and close to everything yet quiet. It was very safe with plenty to see and do. It could have had a few more pool tables to keep our 15 year old boys entertained in the evening. We didn't go on the Praie de Oura beach at the end of 'the strip' but went to see it and it looked very clean and the sea seemed safe but apparently cold. It was a 5 euro taxi ride from Albeufuira town which has fantastic street entertainers in the evening in the square and a small promenade with restaurants overlooking the beach. The temperature drops a little in the evening making it comfortable to stroll around and, of course, sleep.
The resort is quite small there are enough bars, restaurants around 5 mins away should you wish to stay in resort.
The beach was nice and not too busy although there are a few steps down and of course back up again.
The roads at night are quite dark and do not have a pavement so you have to be careful walking back to apartments.

Avoid early morning on the southern end of the strip..this is when all litter is cleared!
Entertainment is first class with many bars, discos, and restaurants.
Try the Sizzling Stone, not cheap but a wonderful night out.
Beach excellent with all sorts of water sports, clean and tidy.
Next year perhaps we will visit elsewhere on the Algarve but it will have to be good to match up to Vila Petra!

I was quite amazed by the cleanliness of Albufeira. I did not see any litter or over flowing bins throughout our holiday.
There are countless number of bars and restaurants in the Montechoro region to choose from. Most of the bars seemed to offer their own live entertainment.
The beaches within walking distance of Albufeira are all beautiful. I have been to the Maldives and seen some of the worlds most spectacular beaches and still I loved the beaches in Albufeira. The sea was too cold and choppy to swim in but the sands were safe, clean and very relaxing - lovely!

A short downhill stroll took us to the old town quaint and quietly bustling in september, clean bars and restaurants the Bailot was particulaly nice, lovely icecream sundaes served by friendly staff during the day. A short walk from the casa mitchel took you down onto the promonade lovely sea views and quiet bars which was a nice change if you didnt want to walk down into town. Would go back to casa mitchel and old town. We have stayed in burgau and pria da luz, visiting portamao hotel oriental in sept 2007 will post a reviw on return. Visit portugal if you havent already done so, you will enjoy it.
